For All Those Asking Questions About Dunne As a Right-Back Option 15:37 - Apr 13 with 4164 viewsE15Hoop

This came up a lot on Monday/Tuesday this week after West Brom, so here's what GA himself had to say aboiut it. Proof that ther WAS a plan for all those doubting it and accusing GA of "throwing the dice.."

Ainsworth reckons he played Dunne at RB as he's 'quick',

Must be comparing him to Dickie if he thinks he's quick, although his ungainly running style might be deceptive and maybe he's quick enough in the training ground sprints.

There may have been a “plan”, but that does not make it smart. I’m hoping it’s just a one-off.

Playing a 6”4 CB, who is pretty immobile at the best of times, and probably the least comfortable of our defenders on the ball, at full back, is questionable to say the least.

I personally find the supporting comments by GA worrying in the sense that he thinks CBs should be able to play RB. Back in the day maybe, but this is modern football and it’s a totally different skill set.

Obviously sees both Dunne and Dickie in training and must have thought Dickie was not mobile enough and Dunne is decent in possession, who'd have thought heh!

Yeah Newcastle are doing absolute sh!te with playing Burn at left back.
Ditto City with Ake.

Obviously, Dunne not in their class, but it's all relative.

Also not saying I think this is a brilliant long term solution. But I'm not 'worried' by anything Gaz said there.

Bare bones.

Each to their own Anti.

On the topic of Dan Burn, he’s comfortable on the ball, as is Ake - at Man City that’s a given. Might be all relative to you, but not to me.

I stand by my point that the modern day full back is a very specific set of skills.

Agree, obvious examples to the contrary but I'm always more concerned when I see forward players converted to wing-back or full-backs,

I think Roy Keane may have said about Ashley Young 'he does'nt have a defensive bone in his body' and you only need to see the likes of Nico defending his post to think likewise.

JD: Surely this just comes back to what I said to you on Monday, that the plan is the "plan for now" as opposed to the "ultimate plan"?
Essentially I think what GA is saying is that we're not Man City, and fortunately we don't have to be Man City to get the points we need to finish 21st.
We can't (sadly) have it both ways. Do we want players with passion and commitment who will give everything for the cause, or do we want to run the risk - as so many have been saying - of playing players who are either;
a. Not 100% fit
b. Not 100% committed
or c neither 100% fit or committed
Now there might be a message to Laird in what he did on Monday, as several people commented, or it might be because he saw Laird as still being fragile after Friday. Clearly, he's not going to reveal that, but surely you've got to give Ainsworth some credit for having taken a decisive step that ultimately most of us believe actually worked for the most part?

Agree, did'nt take Ainsworth long to work out who the 'good guys' are,

When you see some of our fans abusing Dunne at WBA and the ongoing abuse Dykes gets compared to some right Jose Boswinga's who have played for us this season and last (not going there) and you just think do we sometimes get what we deserve.

Fair points E15.

I just find some of the tactical-related comments and decisions GA makes as a bit perplexing. We’ll have to come back to this topic later to find out if it’s short term or embedded thinking.

But based on his history at Wycombe and the many public comments he’s made over the years about what he values, id wager it’s less of a temporary solution and more part of what we can expect going forwards.

Absolutely!
On that very point, I'd recommend everyone who hasn't yet to read this:

These are the minutes from the meeting with Leon Balogun at Heston following on from the post-match Wigan incident. Really interesting read.

Those criticising Dunne instead of Laird are under informed about our set piece defending stats.

Most goals conceded from set pieces is us on 19 now as that stat was old. That’s extremely high.

It must be taken into account that Dunne instead of Ethan Laird is undoubtedly going to improve us on attacking and defending set pieces.

Also Laird’s head has most definitely gone at the moment. Sitting out games. Sitting down at Wigan. His poor and very nervous performance against Preston

I have a got a lot of sympathy for Ainsworth on this in current circumstances

Have faith, JD. I would set against that the fact that he clearly thinks a lot of Taylor Richards, and sees in him someone that we can potentially build a team around, but is doing everything he can to not chuck him at the deep end (especially given "Shoelacegate" the other week).
Ebere Eze speaks highly of Wild Thing and credits him with a lot of his development, and you could clearly see him blossom at our place after hs Wycombe stint.
I think a lot of people will be very pleasantly surprised by what we start producing over the next year or two, if Wild Thing and Dobbo are given the space and time they need.

Dunne playing RB is an absolute proper wrong thing to do......why an earth GA thinks anything different I do not know. He is a CB, Laird is a RB even if he is out of form or whatever.

A major mistake by GA playing Dunne ahead of Laird at RB.......our attacking options and threat gone by one wrong selection. GA knows we are lacking goals and he plays a defensive player in a role that he is not fit to play!!!

But I see some think its ok to play him at RB - wrong.
