Swindon Match Thread.. on 19:19 - Aug 20 with 2825 views | 49thseason | The Slow Death of Rochdale AFC What we are witnessing is the culmination of over 5 seasons of blinkered direction at Boardroom level and the wilful adherence to a flawed football plan. We were told that the best way forward for the club was to develop young players and sell them on. The money would be then spent on more youngsters and developing the squad. A feasible plan you might think, but the reality has been less than effective. The Club IS the first team squad, everything rotates around having a successful team on the pitch, gates, sponsorship, the ability to attract players and the money to pay their wages. The money from selling players has not gone into a stronger squad, the replacements have not been of a similar quality... how could they be? If they were we couldn’t afford them! They have simply been poorer players with less experience but perhaps a suggestion of potential. But potential is only realised over time and one season isn't enough. You simply cannot carry on selling 1, 2, 3 or more players per season and not extending the contracts of solid L2 players and think that they can be replaced with potential. And as the cost of doing business rises, more of the cash brought in from sales has to be allocated to running the club, the squad gets weaker season on season, other business activities are starved of cash further reducing income, loanees replace contracted players, the age of the team gets younger or much much older and the downwards spiral accelerates. As many have already alluded to, this squad individually has some talent but it lacks football experience. It is perhaps possible to blood one or two new youngsters into an established, workmanlike squad, but you cannot play 5,6,7, naïve (in the footballing sense) players in a team with only 4 or 5 players with any real combative experience. And, if you believe in developing youth, you cannot depend on season long loans for players who have little allegiance to the club and who will leave at the end of the season as they have already achieved much of their ambition and are at a much bigger club already. The previous board set this strategy, they sold Matheson for an alleged £1m and their eyes stood out on stalks. Bottomley and Kelly clearly believed they had found a way to grow the club, but then reality set in. Results have been getting worse for the last 5 seasons. 30 home victories in 110 matches, 29 away victories in 113 games have destroyed crowds, income and excitement. Even Die-hard supporters are sick of watching us lose. Bottomley’s answer was, as we all know, to sell up and farck off, before the truth dawned on everyone. The system doesn’t work, and the lower in the leagues we go, the less attractive the football being played and the game becomes a test of strength and size, not footballing ability. The money from transfers has been squandered as far as the team is concerned, we own the ground but we have not got a single player who makes the heart beat faster. Dropping out of L1 cost us £1m a year from team wages and if we fall out of L2 yet more money will be lost. And who could we sell for big money from this squad? Odoh who cant hit a barn with a banjo? Brierley who can’t even get a game? Sicknote Charman or bigger sicknote Campbell? So, we now have a club with virtually none of the squad in the critical 24-30 age group, we have kids and near-retirement players and not much in-between. Few have the stamina and sheer physical ability to be successful in the bottom 2 divisions, and the ones that did have left and have not been adequately replaced. Once the weather turns wintery, and pitches become heavy, this current team will get steam-rollered by bigger, heavier, stronger sides. Young teams do not travel well, they are easily discouraged, they are over-coached and under-motivated, they have one eye on a big-time transfer and with each defeat their eagerness turns to disappointment and disillusion. What to do? Right now we have to make the best of a bad situation, we have to find a way to put points on the board, you cant turn strangers into a team overnight, particularly if you are losing twice a week. Stockdale was only partially responsible, he had his instructions about the “plan”, he was given a budget (improved apparently), but, he he is a dour graduate from the “by the book coaching academy”, not a wild card like Hill, or a cunning bully like Evans? It is imperative that Stockdales replacement is not another from the same mould. Its a complete mess which will probably end in tears. a travesty that has been years in the making and which a naïve new board has perpetuated, well, what else could they do? They inherited a car-crash, players were sold off to fill holes in the finances. it might take years to fix this situation, by which time the club could be extinct. Put Simply this team HAS to stay in L2. In 63 seasons watching I have seen enough crap to recognise the symptoms of impending disaster. The solutions require a new mindset and a willingness to do the unthinkable.... play 4 forwards when we think we can score goals, use 5 centre halves if we need to defend. Turn defenders into forwards and midfielders if necessary, use the bench players proactively. Throw away the latest coaching manual and remember what Charles Hughes advocated, ... “The ball has to go into the opponents penalty area or Positions of Maximum Opportunity (POMO) as often as possible ”. We all know that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is the stuff of fools. So, it’s time for dramatic changes. We have to set the opposition problems they did not account for, this stuff isn't in the coaching manuals, but we have little more to lose at this point. We have been found out as far as three at the back is concerned, there has to be more flexibility and a different mindset, it's beyond time to ditch the current ideas and go straight to plan Z. If Leicester and West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday and the rest don't like it, tough, but would they be thrilled to get back players who have been physically and mentally battered for 40-odd games either? The problems are mounting, the time to solve them is shrinking, the next moves are absolutely critical or League Football at Rochdale will be a distant memory.

Tbf, why should he? I can’t help but think that whoever BucketB picked would be used as a stick to beat him with. He/she(?) stuck their head above the parapet & said their piece, we can agree or disagree but it’s ironic that after 3 games in so many who rubbished his musings jumped on the Robbie Out bandwagon as if it was the last plane out of Kabul. Some people are glass half empty, some half full, but that poster was bang on the money as far as the ex manager & his squad are concerned!! I know that the counter argument is “throw enough sh!t at a wall & some is bound to stick” comes into play but on this occasion (& I wish it wasn’t so) his predictions have been borne out. Let’s hope that at least some of the “100 plus” applicants don’t emanate from the UK’s secure hospitals & we can find someone to sort this mess out.

That would be a fair point if he’d not been doing it for over 10-15 years under various guises regarding different managers (one of whom won us promotion twice) and players (many of whom who have gone on to have very good careers after leaving us). He’s a WUM, I’d have thought that was obvious.

This is a really good , well thought out post. The truth is that since that final league game of 2016/17, against Bradford at home, the club has been spiralling, not dramatically but the ratcheting downwards has been steady. We went into that game actually harbouring hopes of a playoff place. Hellfire, that seems a long time ago. We all know what happened the following season against Charlton and the decline has continued. It’s not all the fault of this board or of Robbie Stockdale (or even David Bottomley’s) but was perhaps inevitable but the decline now seems to be accelerating. Sell Morley, buy Ball. Sell Beesley, sign Charman and Campbell. There’s no-one left to sell. No real hospitality income. Which other club in the last round of the Carabao Cup had pie and peas on the menu in the hospitality suites? That’s an extreme example of decline but indicative all of a sudden as to where we are as a club. How are the likes of Morecambe with no real heritage or Academy tradition holding their heads above water and we are turning into the latest EFL basket case? I have total respect for any fan who has trekked to Gillingham, Stevenage and Swindon so far this year but it’s going to be a slog until May. I too have been going to Spotland since the early 1960’s and seen desperate times. The latter part of the 1967/68 season when the stand roof collapsed. Those horrible periods in 1977 and 1980 when wins were few and far between. And don’t mention 1973/74! I haven’t felt as bad since those days about the future of the club. As long as there’s life there’s hope though and we’re nowhere near the do not resuscitate stage. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Since Hill was handed the 5 year contract (which was welcomed at the time by the large majority including me) in the summer of 2017 we've been fighting relegation battles every season, so do we blame Chris Dunphy and the board of that time for the start of the downward spiral since then? Hill did seem to lose his mojo pretty quickly once he had that security of the contract and we've been struggling in League 1 and now League 2 ever since.

That is indeed where mistakes were made both on and off the pitch. It’s also why although there is justifiable anger at what happened under the previous regime in this last couple of years, a great deal came as a result of decisions made before then. That all said, I actually firmly believe that football goes in cycles for most clubs. The posts on here talk about the dire days during the 70s, 80s and parts of the 90s, things are bad again now and sometimes that has to be acknowledged as part of the game. We don’t have to accept it, we must seek to improve, but what if we do continue to exist in the lower reaches of the division for the next decade? It may happen. Right now we’d all take that!

Talking of which, the compensation due to Stockdale and Shan on their contracts will hinder the club's finances even further; presumably nearly a full year in each case

Swindon Match Thread.. on 22:14 - Aug 20 with 2361 views | Swissdale | As this thread has turned into more of a “current state of the club” I thought I’d stick my opinion in. Depressing as it is, I think we already look like the first team to be relegated in August. The squad is just so poor in all areas it’s far too big a job for anybody to come in and fix. How did we get here? I think, unlike previous posters, that developing youth / broken toys into sellable assets IS AND STILL CAN BE a viable model. The issue as I see it is that this ONLY works if there is a team that is performing well on the pitch and delivering results. The two are not mutually exclusive, and unfortunately, it seems the mentality of the club has been to ONLY focus on the selling of players - with wilful disregard to the ever-decreasing quality of the first team. From conversations I’ve had, this mentality is seemingly engrained throughout the club. For me it’s time to start again from ground zero as regards the footballing side - get someone in with experience in ASAP. Let the directors run the business side of things, but politely tell them to mind their own business when it comes to “football philosophy” or any of that garbage. Clubs are successful (and fans are happy) when the first team is winning games. Not matter the style of the football. Sellable assets are also possible to create with ANY style of football. If you can win ugly and have a brilliant target man, of course championship clubs will still be knocking. We seem to think we can only sell players by playing football “the right way” - there is no such thing. Massive week coming up. Someone needs to come in and get at least 5 players out the door, whilst bringing as many in to give us at least a chance. Mission impossible
Swindon Match Thread.. on 22:45 - Aug 20 with 2241 views | surb_dale | Unfortunately at the moment we appear to be this seasons Scunthorpe as one of the ‘basket case’ clubs likely to occupy one of the 2 relegation spots. The good news is we still have 41 games left to try and arrest things. I still think with the right manager at the helm most of the current squad can be shaped into a reasonable outfit that can at least pick up enough results to stay up. It’s clear the current defence are not comfortable passing out but the likes of Ebanks and John aren’t bad defenders so if we can create a more direct back to basics approach there is hope we could grind out enough results to stay up. Recruitment has been scattergun resulting in a totally unbalanced squad with a glut of centre halves, no fullbacks,a weak midfield and a number of forwards but no target man. Lessens need to be learned but all focus now needs to be on grinding out some points and staying up.
Swindon Match Thread.. on 22:50 - Aug 20 with 2218 views | swiggy | Here’s my innocent way of putting things, football is an easy game at each end of the pitch there are 3 sticks, 2 vertical and a horizontal one balanced by on top of the two vertical ones, we play with a ball and the object is to put this ball between your opponents two vertical sticks and below the horizontal stick. So what you need to do is play with the ball in your opponents half and try to place the ball as close as you can to your opponents vertical sticks. Placing the ball close to your own vertical sticks may result in an outcome you don’t like so don’t do it. Simple isn’t it?

Hasn't he been part of the coaching set up. If he has ( it seems inconceivable that he hasn't) then why wouldn't he know about the corner drills? Did i say he didn't know what the drills were? No. The point here is in resetting the defence at corners away from those drills, which aren't working, i.e. away from zonal marking towards a different system, presumably man marking If zonal marking has been DRILLED into them, it'll take more than the one full day he's been in the role to change it, especially with all the other stuff he'll have had to take on board

Swindon Match Thread.. on 00:08 - Aug 21 with 1888 views | NorthernDale | I have just seen the first goal on the EFL highlights, what an unnecessary goal to concede, caused by the passing the ball across the defence and goalkeeper, followed by a weak back pass which was intercepted and the rest is history. It was obvious that need to pass the ball sideways and back, would cost us at some stage, and sadly today it did, it put us on the back foot from the first minute, hopefully they will stop this style of football from now on.
