McNulty at Championship level: 65 apps for Barnsley & Scunthorpe Hill in the old Second Division: 96 apps for Blackburn (plus one as a sub in the PL) Hill also played a lot more games in the fourth tier than McNulty. Regardless, the point still stands that managerial ability and playing ability are not always linked. I'd also add that when Hill was a player with us, would anyone have forecast that his teams (first spell) would play in the manner they did?

You are right about player's abilities not necessarily meaning they will be good or bad at being managers or coaches, and to be fair to myself, I did make that point. I never realised that McNulty had in fact played 2nd tier football, but I honestly believe he in the main has been best average for us, with a lot of mistakes, compared to Hill who I thought was a decent left footed CH for us and who rarely from memory made mistakes. What's your opinion on the type of manager we should get if RS departs? Would you go for a McNulty, Henderson combination or a more experienced, battle hardened manager ?I do wonder if Tony Ellis could be brought in to have more say in the first team, maybe bringing in some one else to help with the youth, to free up Ellis to do first team affairs, even if purely the coaching side.

Hill only played in old Division 3 for us, whereas most of McNulty’s appearances have been at League One level which is a better standard. McNulty has always been somewhat of a divisive player for us, but he has been around the club as a constant during pretty much the most successful period in our entire history. He deserves some respect against his name.

I don't disagree, but recall that Hilly was appointed on a temporary basis. It soon became clear that he was transformative, just as it soon became clear that Beech wasn't quite ready in 2011/12 Giving one of the likely candidates in the club a similar opportunity wouldn't make our league position untenable if it doesn't work out, whereas appointing a manager from outside the club on a contract which didn't work out could be a disaster

Much to agree with there but Hill had the likes of Murray, Jones, Le Fondre, Dagnall, Ramsden, Perkins, Goodall, McCardle, Doolan etc - a different league to the current squad?

Though when he took over Le Fondre and Perkins weren’t there and out of the others there’s an argument only Jones was seen as being of sufficient standard by many fans. Hill came in and not only improved the squad with additions, he improved the performances of those in it.

Robbie out. (n/t) on 15:54 - Aug 18 with 2088 views | YadHoDale | AFAIK Keith Hill was right-footed, but played mostly on the left as he was able to use both. I believe his favourite CB partner at Dale was Alan Johnson, a natural left footer who allowed KH to actually play on the right.

Robbie out. (n/t) on 01:50 - Aug 19 with 1506 views | Sandyman | At one point at the last fans forum, RS reeled off a list of stats (including xG) to portray how "good" his team was last season. Looking at similar stats posted on this thread from the Stevenage game, the xG comes across as ghastly and is the opposite of what he claimed his team were. A shame it didn't work out but if you're going to quote stats, you have to be able to back them up. Tough call for the directors but the right one for RAFC, and RS. #UTDNFS [Post edited 19 Aug 2022 1:56]
