Out of the 1000's of books I have read Moby Dick and Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler are the only books I have failed to read through to the end. Crime & Punishment was nearly another but it picked right up after approximately 100 pages and I would probably read it again now.
I normally manage to get through most books that I put in the bathroom.... a war of attrition! It is daunting though!

I'm not denying it Brian, and neither does Britain. We have apologised over and over again for the sins committed by an elite. And when people say British Empire, they snidely really mean English Empire. Scotland,Wales and yes even Ireland were part of this Empire - but they get off free. What about all the other Empires built on greed and venality? Human history is littered by exploitation and cruelty; England didn't invent it !The Irish were also enslaving native Britons back in the day. No country has the moral high ground when it comes to history. I am sick of listening to lefies blaming my country for all the problems in the world. No country has done more to attone for its past - and the constant denigration of a decent people and country gets my goat TBH.My body belongs to Ireland, but my heart and mind belong to England( hopefully I'll be back there sometime soon).

Damo1962, thanks for replying and I completely understand if, as you said, you’ll choose not to continue this. You and I are indeed fellow hoops - thanks for saying that. But this is something I feel as strongly about, as I suspect you do too, and I feel I must reply to you.
I don’t see how any of the points you make can be seen as atoning for Britain’s many past injustices. How do they address for example, the Bengal famine in 1943/44 in which 3 million Indians died of starvation as a result of British policy to shift resources to British and American troops during WWII? Or the 19th century Opium wars when Britain fought to maintain it’s financially lucrative illegal drug dealing in China? There’s really quite a long list of horrors that could be made, but I’ll stop with those two and answer your specific points.
“Giving everyone entry to UK, and a better standard of living for one.” Not sure who you mean by ‘everyone’. That’s never been the case and certainly isn’t now, sadly not even Ukrainian refugees.
“Foreign Aid us another.” In 2015 Britain finally kept a 45 year old promise to give 0.7% GNI in foreign aid but broke that promise 5 years later and reduced it to 0.5%. Not great for the 5th richest nation on the planet, especially given Britain receives many, many times more in financial and tax flows from poor countries than it gives to them.
“Asylum, did more than most to stop Hitler and Nazim.” Britain did indeed received many thousands of WWII refugees as did America, Palestine and other countries in central and south America, which was wonderful. And yes, it fought Hitler and the Nazis, as other countries did, in what was a hugely regrettable war — but that’s a discussion for another time.
In short, I simply see no making amends or reparation for Britain’s injustices in the points you make. I wish I could because that would mean victims of heinous acts of which Britain is guilty would have received compensation.

I must be imagining the fact then, that after the Abolition of Slavery Act in 1807, the dastardly British Government created the West Africa Squadron specifically to patrol the coast of West Africa to stop slave ships. At its height the Squadron was using one sixth of the Royal Navy fleet and between 1808 to 1860 it captured 1600 slave transports and freed 150,000 Africans with 1500 British sailors losing their lives in the process. But of course, God forbid that we should ever claim that this country has done anything worthy of praise.
OK John please don't take this as a slagging because I am sure you are a decent bloke who is sincere and proud of Britain and why not? So am I, most other countries are worse right now, I'd not live in more than a few of them.
I don't want to get into this colonialism/anti-colonialism bollocks but the West Africa Squadron has become some weird totem that people want to parade on the basis of some bullshit they read on the internet.
It was an admirable thing to do and more altruistic than most countries have done but "at its height" it was an insignificant part of the Navy and for most of its existence it was tiny and underfunded, with virtually no impact on the slave trade. It was hated by the Navy and regarded as the worst posting you could get due to disease.
It doesn't really compare with the fact that Britain built the biggest industrial nation in the world on the triangular (slave) trade. Decades after we abolished slavery in our empire there was serious lobbying that we should intervene on the side of the Confederacy because slave-produced cotton fed the Lancashire mills (where our own people worked in near-slave conditions - this isn't a black v white thing, it's an exploitative bastards vs the rest of us thing, and I'm with the rest of us.)
My country has done good things, it has done bad things, and I'm not going to guilt trip myself about stuff I didn't do, the past is another country and it isn't mine nor yours. Not ours to blame nor to take the blame. It belongs to the people who lived then and we don't have the right to judge them f they did wrong or take the credit for them f they did right, just to understand them. Judge not, before you judge yourself, while you talk of me someone else is judging you, as the descendant of slaves Bob Marley sang. But as someone who has spent a lot of time studying history I get pissed off at half facts being paraded around as killers without any real study of the context.
