Ashes thread 17:11 - Jul 15 with 110549 views | johnhoop | Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event. For me the most interesting questions about team selection are; 1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me. 2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood. 3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make. Any thoughts?

Ashes thread on 15:29 - Aug 25 by Tonto | Who to open? It cant be Roy. It will ruin him. Sibley has done well for Warwickshire Pope in for Buttler. Foakes for Bairstow. Jimmy for Woakes if fit. |
We’re still probably not going to make this but what an absolutely incredible innings from Stokes. F-cking unbelievable.

Ashes thread on 16:26 - Aug 25 with 1988 views | Benny_the_Ball | Take a bow Ben Stokes. Not only is this man super talented and gutsy but he's blessed too. The streaky six at the World Cup final and today surviving a plumb lbw that would have seen Australia win this test by 1 run to retain the Ashes. Can you imagine how sickening that would've been? Instead England are level at 1-1 with all to play for. Honourable mention to Jack Leach who arguably played the finest 1 not out in cricketing history.
Ashes thread on 16:27 - Aug 25 with 1980 views | Nov77 | Didn’t think I’d ever see drama to match that World Cup win but to see it again so soon afterwards! This day will go down in history! 10th wicket stand of 76, leach contributed 1 run! Stokes bonafide ashes legend after that

Ashes thread on 16:34 - Aug 25 with 1936 views | johnhoop | Thought Botham’s performance at Headingley in 81 was the greatest knock I’d ever seen by an England batsman but that eclipsed it by some margin.
Ashes thread on 16:34 - Aug 25 with 1934 views | DWQPR | I remember well the match in 1981 at Headingley and that surpasses that easily. Ben Stokes what a legend. Fantastic with the ball in the second innings and with the bat? Seen nothing like it. Hopefully that will deflate the Aussies for the remainder of the series.

Ashes thread on 16:45 - Aug 25 with 1876 views | CiderwithRsie | Tell you what, this is turning into one of *the* great Ashes series. - Steve Smith's innings at Edgbaston, when Aus had been under the cosh all match and he looked impossible to dismiss - Joffra Archer's debut, looking potential No 1 bowler in the world - Root's innings yesterday - still not convinced he's a skipper but serious cojones - Ben Bloody Stokes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic stuff for the profile of English cricket after the WC

Ashes thread on 16:56 - Aug 25 with 1839 views | denhamhoop2 | Thank God for Paine's waste of a review cost The Aussies the win. That is the finest innings by an Englishman I've seen especially considering he had scored 2 off about 40 balls. Still would look to rejig the batting line up as Buttler doesn't look capable of hitting the ball off the square at the moment

Don't get your knickers in a knot.. I've got no problem with having just enjoyed watching a superlative knock, and it doesn't matter if he was from Timbuktu or Woolloomooloo.

Yeah, I couldn't believe that one. The last review was wasted on a shout that was less likely than a dead donkey winning the Melbourne Cup. And then next over...
