A brilliant, brilliant city; I’m properly jealous. Neighbourhood wise, we stayed in Trastevere, which we really liked; a nice old district with plenty of good restaurants and bars, but not really touristy, and close enough to walk to everything we wanted to see. It's not the cheapest place in the world and we just wanted somewhere safe and habitable: stayed in this place and it was absolutely fine: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187791-d583398-Reviews-Arco_del_Laur

A little flavour of Trastevere: https://www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/rome/trastevere-and-gianicolo/travel-tips-and

Have a great trip.

Unless you want to push the boat out, I wouldn't recommend staying there, but go for a drink at the top floor bar of the Hotel Eden at dusk, you won't be disappointed with the view.

Trastevere is the place. The only part of Rome with its medieval street plan intact, beautiful, central, full of everything you'll need. Easy walk to the Vatican or the centre, good tram line takes you to Termini and more distant parts. Lived there for 18 months and loved the place - but make sure you don't pick a hotel too close to the Ponte Sisto/Piazza Trilussa/Vicolo del Cinque unless you like partying into the wee hours, because in July its seriously noisy until 3 or 4 in the morning. Half the city's population of 17-25 year olds seem to spend the warm nights sitting in the square singing. Brilliant. Unless you fancy sleeping.

Have a great trip

I went there for the rugby in Feb 2016 and we're going back next Feb.This time I might see something other than the inside of a pub.

Same. Went last year, going next year. Can reiterate that Trastevere is the most perfect and atmosheric place to stay

Went there over 20 years ago now and whilst it was just a day trip I should warn you that the locals were very hostile towards us with not just verbal abuse but they actually threw things at us and the local constabulary just stoood around and watched and in some cases joined in with the some actual physical violence.

Still, a fantastic trip and inspite of the locals we had a great time and came back with what we'd gone there for...

Just to clarify that-s a photo of me and my Bro in Rome when we went to see the Italy 0 0 England World Cup qualifier in 1997. A great day inspite of the locals both in and out of uniform.

The Stadio Olimpico is in such a beautiful setting in the city and I think it is very scenic outside too that I don't think it would be as good to watch football there as an away fan.
The atmosphere for the rugby is a lot more relaxed.

I'm not surprised they were hostile if one of you can levitate. That would freak anyone out.

Just want to say a big thanks for recommendations for Rome and especially the Trastevere area as a place to stay. We stayed at the Arco de Lauro as per Konks recommendation, great place to stay and had a brillant short stay in Rome, and of course loads of Brownie Points with the missus.

Just be aware the Vatican is a 6 hour shuffle along crowded corridors in the heat in the summer... even if you buy the so called express ticket. Unless you are turuely desperate to see it avoid it

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

For the Vatican we did the breakfast tour at 7:15am with about 100 other tourists, gets you in there before the crowds and the food was decent. Also from The Sistine Chapel exit we were able to jump in on the guided tours exit and straight into St Peter's Basilica, big time saving on having to walk round to the main entrance and queue in the intense heat. Rome was amazing with the ancient sights (also the ladies were a sight to behold).

If you happen to be of the Christian persuasion, there is free accommodation under the Coliseum. Can be a trifle noisy though, some sort of animal activity goes on next door.
