Speed cameras 13:38 - Oct 2 with 11707 views | Snipper | With the A40 now under average speed control, I've been using my cruise control and sticking rigidly to the limit. This hasn't stopped many cars going past me by anything up to 20mph. Does anybody know what the threshold is for average speed cameras? I know it used to be 10% + 2 mph. Many thanks in advance :-).

Speed cameras on 10:53 - Oct 19 by bob566 | in Ireland we have some daft limits. On single lane country roads (real dangerous ones) we have 100kph and then we have three lane dual carriageways (granted the very inside lane is a bus corridor) but the speed limit is 80kph. |
Same here. Rural roads generally have a limit of 60mph (100kph) but you can encounter a whole host of hazards... horses, people, cows, sheep, other animals, cyclists, mud on road, animal poo & leaves, and so on. Not surprising rural roads are actually more dangerous than motorways. Yet, you have places like both the A40 Westway (40mph) and Hammersmith flyover (30mph) in London which are both elevated, don't have any of the above, don't have schoolchildren or nuns and yet have much lower speed limits. Both could easily be 10mph more without being at all dangerous. Most people go faster than the speed limits anyway and as there are no cameras, you'd be unlucky to get pulled over as there are so few police cars these days.
Speed cameras on 13:14 - Oct 19 with 2757 views | Stanisgod | Did a speed awareness course last week ( first pull in 33 years) for doing 36 in a 30. There was a guy there got done for 32 mph and the bloke running it said there is no percentage on speed cameras, be they fixed or otherwise, you only get the percentage thing after you get done to work out your fine , points or whether you qualify for S.A.C.
| It's being so happy that keeps me going. |

Was yours run by the AA? I went on one earlier this year (AA run) and they did say there was a percentage.

No, this was run by Essex County Council although I was done in Lincoln. You obviously can't trust what any of them say best to just be safe and take no notice of the percentage thing, you can't go wrong then.

Absolutely! Stick to the limit and there's no problems. On my course they said that speed cameras are put in place if there have been three or more major speed-related incidents (i.e. deaths really) in a year. Well, the camera's on my journey to work are placed thus; Two on two sections of the same dual carriageway that I've not seen one minor incident in 2 years, let along anything serious. One in a 30mph zone (that I got done at!!) where the traffic is generally so slow that a bruise I think is the worst that would happen. One on another section further along the dual carriageway that I've not seen one minor incident in 2 years, let along anything serious. Basically, 4 cameras in less than 5 miles where there's never an incident. Yet on the same stretch of the A316 there are at least 2-3 low speed accident black-spots at roundabouts or traffic lights but no camera's there and seemingly no intention to sort them out.
Speed cameras on 14:54 - Oct 19 with 2667 views | hoof_hearted | I did a SAC with an ex-copper. Really interesting hearing it from a professional. He said he was always getting told that they are in safe areas where nobody sees accidents but any copper will tell you that they are picking up the bodies when we're all fast asleep. Cameras are installed after they have done road engineering (new road markings/signs etc. Then after 3 or 4 more "serious incidents" they put a camera in. It isn't as trivial as we think.

Absolutely right. I've never seen any accidents on the vast majority of roads I've driven on. All that proves is that the accidents have never happened when I've been there, not that there are no accidents.
Speed cameras on 15:45 - Oct 19 with 2625 views | CiderwithRsie | Whatever you think of speed cameras there is a really, really easy way to avoid getting caught. You have a speedo in your car telling you how fast you're going and there are bloody great signs up on the road side telling you what the limit is. I won't pretend that I never go over the limit, but I wouldn't be whinging if I got caught for exceeding it. I sympathise with people who get caught for a marginal infringement when we all know full well there are t*ssers driving like lunatics who get away with it because there's no camera nearby or (likely as not) there is one but it's turned off but that's the nature of the electronic beast - the only alternative is either a free for all or a hell of a lot of expensive traffic cops. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

If that's the case, why don't they put camera's up at Manor Circus and Whitton Road roundabouts (both A316)? Both of these have "left hand only" lanes yet day after day after day you get fukwits who, intentionally or are just too stupid, go down these lanes then go straight on causing near-accidents with the person to their right. I've had more near misses, seen many near misses, and see the aftermath of actual collisions at those two places than on any of the sections where there's a speed camera. Are the camera's acting as a deterrent? Maybe, in which case they are doing their job. Put camera's up at those two roundabouts as well or at least re-design them. The Whitton Road one just got redesigned a few months ago and it's now worse than it was before! It doesn't matter which of the three lanes you are in, all three of them has a potential for someone in another lane to hit you because they have no clue how to actually manage lanes. We are always being told "speed kills". Well, it does and anything to stop that is good. However, the notion seems to be that speed alone is the cause of accidents. It's not, as per my two roundabout examples, yet very little seems to be done to address them. [Post edited 19 Oct 2015 16:10]

Speed cameras on 10:41 - Oct 19 by Juzzie | As one of the 4 trial sections (A316 Hospital Bridge Rd Roundabout to A4 Hogarth Roundabout) is on my route to work I did a test run today. I drove as I normally would, traffic was actually quite light for a pleasant change. These are the sat nav readings based on a motorbike vehicle; Ave speed 27mph Ave driving speed 31mph So, taking into account roundabouts and traffic lights my average speed never went above 30mph let alone the 40mph the max speed limit is. Even my driving speed (taking out the stops) was 31mph. In a car and with heavier traffic these figures I think would come down further. This mean one 'could' hoof it at 50+ along any clear stretches knowing the average speed will still keep you within the limits. Not quite sure how that makes the roads any safer? |
Is it not the average between camera 1 and camera 2? Rather than the average of the whole journey. Has anyone ever been done by an average speed camera

I live between these 2 roundabouts and could not agree more - the standard of drivers that straight line these roundabouts are shocking - are there accidents on these - all the time. Are there traffic light jumper cameras - no Is there CCTV to monitor these roundabouts - no Both the speed cameras on this stretch are inactive. Fine its not a dangerous stretch and the last 2 serious accidents in the last 15 years on both occasions the drivers were drunk! Where the first camera is active and both me and the missus have both been done is between Richmond Circus and what was the Richmond Gas Works (Vauxhall garage). This is a double camera where if you jump the pedestrian lights it will flash and it is also set to go office digitally at 35 mph. The speed limit is 30 (used to be 40) was reduced 10 years ago or so. Half the people on my SAC had been caught here. How do I know this - my mate works for TfL and installs and maintains. The vast majority of the old large GATSO cameras are off (A316). The smaller digitals are on. Do the police prosecute - no only if you are 26 Mph over the limit and it goes to court. Who decides where and when and if to prosecute ? In London Boroughs TfL in consultation with local borough. Who decides to prosecute? Local authority upto 26mph over the limit. They then can decide if you go on a SAC or you get fine and points. Where does the money go if you are fined. If its the local authority - they keep the money. If you are prosecuted and get fine AND points - Police get the money. How do you know this? Traffic cop who caught me with a gun on A316 near Shell Station after Hospital Bridge Road on the way out to M3 in April. He told me that Police revenues have dried up since the decision was given to the local authorities as local authority would rather make 50% of the £100 SAC fees in profit to help prop up other services. You can work out what a money spinner it is 30 x SAC attandees = £3000 cost of delivery and admin is less than £1500 per session. 2 x a day £6000 - and at least 4 a week per hotel/venue £12K a week etc etc. Believe The AA are no longer doing all the SAC - again my friend in the know told me that the guy behind the company now providing alot of the courses is a multi millionaire in the space of a few years. Be warned people!!

That's right, the average speed will be between each set of cameras to take into account people joining and leaving at different places. I suspect between the start and end points along that stretch of the A316 there would have to be many sets of cameras, especially as there's a section between Richmond and Chalkers Corner that's 30mph.
