You can make some good savings by splitting up your journey. I think there's a tool somewhere that'll help find the best deal. I remember splitting a journey to Boston into three a few years ago. I saved about £12 by booking Lancaster to Manc, Manc to Sheffield and Sheffield to Boston, rather than just Lanc to Boston. Super stuff.
