Costa Rica 20:02 - Jun 20 with 3775 views | C_jack | Population approx 4 million. Is there too much of a 'small country' mentality in Wales? do our best but it doesn't matter if we lose cos we're only a little country. Costa Rica are bouncing tonight. What excuses do we really have not to be getting to tournaments? Certainly not that our players aren't good enough, or that we can't compete with other nations. For reference, I'm fairly confident we're on the verge of a 'golden' period for our national team, regardless of a dippy manager.

Costa Rica on 20:08 - Jun 20 with 2289 views | exiledclaseboy | In amongst long periods of being incompetent, Wales have had a fair old chunk of bad luck over the years without which we'd have qualified for a number of tournaments. A Scotland handball given against a Wales player in 1977 stopped us qualifying for Argentina 78. A dodgy handball penalty again against Scotland at Ninian in 1985 stopped us qualifying for Mexico 86. Paul Bodin's missed penalty at the Arms Park cost us a place at USA 94. Mark Hughes's tactical idiocy cost us a place at Euro 2004. Ironically the only one we did qualify for we shouldn't have, in 1958 when we only got a place because everyone refused to play Israel. Excuses? Maybe. But we've been far closer to qualifying on a number of occasions than many would have you believe.

Costa Rica on 20:11 - Jun 20 with 2268 views | DwightYorkeSuperstar | The two reasons Wales do so badly in my opinion are; 1) The fans. The Euro 2004 qualifying campaign was the the beginning of many qualification campaigns where my father would take me to every game at the Millennium Stadium. The atmosphere was superb and we would get fantastic attendances which I believe contributed to our on the pitch success during that period. It is a shame that the gutless Uefa didn't rightly disqualify Russia that campaign. These days we play in front of 5000 people and it is truly embarrassing. This and the attitude MOST Welsh fans have of 'I don't are about international football, Wales are shite, but I'll watch the England games and hope them and Scotland do bad'. This countries fans do not deserve a successful international team. 2) The Welsh F.A. They are football dinosaurs and are clearly only in it to line their pockets and live the lavish lifestyle that comes with the job. Too many instances have occurred where they went for the cheap, safe and low risk decision instead of starting something new and exciting. They got very lucky with the Speed appointment and could have continued his good work by appointing the extremely volatile but unanimous choice in Dutch Ray, but again went for the safe, cheap and puppet like option in Coleman. Well done to Costa Rica. [Post edited 20 Jun 2014 20:12]

That's because Mark Hughes is an idiot. ETA - and one of the main reasons Wales were so sh*t for a few years after he f*cked up the Euro 2004 qualifying.

I also remember him being red carded against Cyprus when we needed him for the next game which was a must win. Its fate innit

Again, the thing about the fans is something about the mentality of the country that bugs me. Happy to remember our place as a little dot on the map. It was evident with the Swans at times last season, "Stop messing about in Europe with all those big boys', absolutely bonkers On point number 2, don't be so sure. The FAW are pretty spot on with regards to coaching and grassroots development, and quite respected for it. The approach around 10 years ago to change the grassroots structure has resulted in the production of more technical players such as Allen and Ramsey . The only thing they're stuck in prehistoric times is with their view on managers.

Agree with much of that. The main reason the stadiums were full for the Euro 2004 campaign was because the Welsh FA were knocking out tickets for £10 adults and £5 for kids. Those prices and the good start to that campaign started a bandwagon rolling, which Mark Hughes then proceeded to whiz all over, the useless c*nt. The changes to the grass roots and coaching was instigated during Terry Yorath's tenure if I remember right, so far more than ten years ago, making it even more forward thinking.

The highest average attendance in Europe, even higher than England who were re-building Wembley at the time. I'm hoping the same is going to happen if we manage to get off to a flyer this time around. It's all there, we have no excuses not to be getting to tournament finals, especially with the talent coming through.

Good answer. Also, I do recall a qualifier against Yugoslavia at NP (it was that long ago) when the ref needed 'assistance' leaving the pitch after some highly dubious decisions. I watched the 85 game in Stirling wearing a giant leak - even the Jocks were gutted for us.

Rudi Glockner was the kants name. 1976, he disallowed welsh goals awarded dubious Yugoslavian goals. Quarter final second leg euro championship

Nail, head, hit! Wales are trying to qualify from a European group. There have always been at least 2 quality teams in our qualifying group. Wales cannot produce quality performances consistently enough to finish top 2. Wales's euro 2018 group is our easiest group in 50 years, mainly because there are now 24 teams qualifying not just 16. Based on squad alone we SHOULD be challenging BosniaHG for 2nd place, can see us slipping up in Israel mind!!!
