Simpson given County job

Despite rumours of a trip to Tripoli, Paul Simpson has been handed his fifth managerial job with the media reporting that he will be named as manager of Stockport County on Monday.

Simpson has been out of work since being sacked by Shrewsbury earlier this year, but he has been given the difficult chance of rebuilding the newly relegated Stockport County. The Hatters have only just come out of a period in administration which lasted over a year, and he will inherit a squad very short on numbers.

County will be Simpson's fifth club as a manager, having managed at Dale, Carlisle, Preston and most recently Shrewsbury, and despite being just 43, he's got close on 400 games in charge to his name. It is expected that Simpson will retain the services of another former Dale player as his assistant, with Peter Ward expected to continue in the role he started under Jim Gannon.

Simpson becomes the third former Dale manager in recent times to go on to manage Stockport. John Hollins had a brief moment in charge at Stockport, though had a longer spell managing County's Chinese affiliated side Stockport Tiger Star, whilst a little further back Danny Bergara made the trip from Spotland to Edgeley Park.
