Swansea exit the league cup after defensive errors undo their good work

Any hopes for the Swans to get in to the third round of this competition were shattered after an awful twenty five minutes at the start of the second half. Leading through a Matt Grimes ninth minute penalty it all fell apart over the second forty five.

You can read the text commentary on the game below.

The Swans were well worth their money after a first half where they displayed purpose and quality against premier league opposition. A handball saw the home side go ahead after Matt Grimes slotted away a ninth minute penalty. It could have been more but the visitors defended admirably under Swansea pressure. When the Cherries did get forwards they didn’t look too dangerous, Rushworth had a few run of the mill saves to make but nothing to concern him.

It was the changes that Bournemouth made at half time that won them this game. Solanke especially coming on for Kiefer Moore. His introduction was key and the Swans defence really couldn’t deal with him and Cook who took ahold of the game from the restart. Really it could have and should have been a lot more for the visitors, The pace and tempo of Bournemouth left the likes of Kyle Naughton all at sea as well as Harry Darling who despite battling bravely just wasn’t up to the mark in this game. David Brooks was enjoying the freedom of the city on the Swans left, marauding forwards with little to stop him. It was his goal which turned the game in his sides favour. Left in acres of space on fifty five minutes he couldn’t fail but to score, the inquest in that defensive howler would be enough for one game. But there was more.

The Swansea defence looked like they only met each other in the car park before the game as one became two on sixty eight minutes. With five Swans players stationary in their own area Solanke headed a Brooks cross against the bar and Traore hammered home the rebound. Not one white shirt responded to the action in front of them.

Surprisingly and against the run of play the Swans did level through a well struck shot from sub Jamie Paterson, his shot flashing in off the post. It was a cracking goal. The home side did come alive for a few minutes after that and Michael Duff replaced Naughton with Jerry Yates. However it would be victory for Bournemouth as their unbeaten run against the Swans since 2007 hit twelve games. There has to be an inquest in to how this Swans side performed tonight. They really could have lost by six or seven, it was only a few offside shouts and a lovely save from Carl Rushworth that kept the score down.

Ryan Christie scored the winner for the Cherries with Keir Starmer watching from the stands, that’s one win from six for the Swans this season as Bristol City arrive on Saturday for an early kick off atbthe Swansea.Com Stadium.

97 - That’s time up, but play goes on. And the game now ends on 98 mins as the Swans sink to another defeat. It was a story of poor defending and decision making at the back which lost the Swans this game. Defensive lapses and a very sleepy response for the first half of the second period lost the Swans this game.

96 - That was the chance, Yates scoops his shot when anything on target would have gone in surely ?

95 - Mepham clears a cross from Paterson as the Swans press.

93 - The Swans are pressing for an equaliser. Is there one more chance ?

90 - 7 mins injury time, And Ryan Christie immediately puts the visitors ahead. The Swans give the visitors too much time on the ball. 2-3. Ashby at fault, Darling turned his back in the shot.

89 - A wonderful move nearly see’s the Swans go ahead after a wonderful run by Yates. Then a quick break and Bournemouth also fluff their lines but fair play Rushworth made a great save.

88 - The crowd try to spur on the Swans with hymns n’ arias.

Bournemouth now pressing for the winner.

85 - 8,755 is tonight’s attendance.

84 - Justin Kluivert son of Patrick is on for the visitors.

80- Jerry Yates on for Naughton. Really the visitors should have been out of sight, but …

78 - The Swans have a corner after good work from Paterson. And it’s Paterson who scores from distance to make it 2-2. The scoreline flatters the Swans. The corner is cleared and comes out to Paterson, who fires in a low left-footed drive that comes all the way through a host of bodies to cannon into the net off the far post.

73 - The circus arrives in Swansea as Naughton goes walkabout and Bournemouth somehow don’t score from some more poor defending. First Darling then Cabango recovering just as the ball looks to cross the line,

Solanki misses a wonderful chance in front of Rushworth but his header goes straight at the keeper.

70 - If the Swans get anything from this they will be very lucky. Second half they have been atrocious.

68 - The inevitable happens as Bournemouth go ahead. Rushworth is stationary from a header which hits his far post. The rebound is watched by five Swansea players as Traore puts his side 2-1 up. Again, that defending was appalling.

65 - Bournemouth goal chalked off and the ensuing free kick for offside Rushworth throws the ball to Solanki who somehow misses a golden opportunity.

64 - Josh Key is playing an admirable role at the back, thankfully he is on his game tonight ( again )

The difference in quality between the Swans and Bournemouth is very noticeable this half.

62- The Swans need to gather themselves as more pressure see’s the visitors third corner of the half.

60 - great save from Rushworth but there’s only one side in this.

SUB. : Allen is off for Mykola Kuharevich . Fulton on for Ginnelly.

57 - Looks like the Swans need to make some subs. All over the place at the back.

55 - David Brooks with the freedom of Swansea levels for the visitors. How was he in so much space ? That was awful defending. Cabango and Naughton on completely different wavelengths.

55 - Solanki who is on for Moore is body checked by Naughton. That’s another yellow.

54 - Rushworth saves from another Bournemouth effort. He’s looking comfortable.

52 - Late tackle from Azeem on Aarons, yellow card.

48 - Two quick corners for Bournemouth. Definitely more purpose with Bournemouth playing at a high tempo.

46 - The visitors have started with far more purpose.

Second half. Teams are out.
Moore is a notable absentee for Bournemouth.

Overall the swans are good value for their lead at HT. They haven’t looked at all out of place and the handball for the penalty was sound. Referee had no problem giving the spot kick. Really could be more had there been a quicker reaction to opportunities in the area. Swans did though look a bit Rooney at the back.

It’s 1-0 to the Swans at HT.

46 - Traore again spurns an opportunity as his shot hits the post.

43 - Cullen is putting himself about. Another chance for the visitors is spurned with three added minutes.

42 - The cherries score but it’s chalked off, to be honest Rushworth didn’t make an attempt to save it.

35 - The visitors are taking control now in midfield, the Swans have to show more resilience in the tackle. The attacks keep coming and Harry Darling is being kept busy tonight.

30 - Liam Cullen is looking lively, quick thinking between him and Josh Key could have produced a second. Swans playing really well.

25 - Huge chance for the visitors, Hamed Traore should play in David Brooks in the area, but he goes for goal himself and sends his effort well wide.

24. The Cherries most certainly know they are in a game as the Swans look for a second.

Swans are all over the Cherries with Josh Key and Azeem playing some lovely stuff. It’s 1-0 through a Matt Grimes ninth minute penalty. David Brooks in the book for Bournemouth.

Leeds had more of the possession and created the better chances against Bristol City, so it feels a little frustrating that we didn’t take all three points.
