G.M's Match Preview: Clement's Midfield Management Could Make Or Break
Derby welcomes Cardiff to the iPro stadium in their first game back following the international break.
After a number of good performances and results, there was a sour taste to dwell on after a very poor performance and defeat against Notts Forest.
In a game where Thorne was off the pace, Johnson was too deep, Russell and Wiemann were anonymous and substitutions by Clement were all wrong, Derby never looked like scoring and deserved to lose.
This makes the staring line up, especially in midfield, an interesting debate. The back four and goalkeeper will stay the same with Keogh and Shackell at centre back and Christie and Warnock in the full back positions.
Ince should come in for Russell or Weimann. They were that poor against Notts Forest, anyone can take their pick, it is likely to be Weimann who drops to the bench but as he has been in goal scoring form it will be an interesting decision for Clement to make.
Clement must also choose three from four in central midfield or actually from five if you include Bryson. Out of all the midfielders Bryson does offer a lot of energy and will get close and beyond the sometimes isolated Martin.
It is likely Thorne and Johnson will start with Hendrick, Bryson and Butterfield fighting for last spot. All three will have arguments for and against why they should or should not start.
After sticking with Russell Slade through tough times this season, Cardiff have started well and are just out of the play off places. They are organised, compact, hard to break down and do not concede many goals.
Marshall is a good goalkeeper, Noone competent in midfield, with Mason and Jones a threat going forward. Whittingham and Gunnarrson are goal threats with Whittingham usually delivering well from set pieces.
Jones should start up front despite having been away on international duty but De Silva and Macheda are out injured. Ameboi will look to make an impact as and when needed from the bench.
Prediction:
This will be a difficult game for Derby and they would benefit from a goal in the first 25 minutes. This would draw Cardiff out a little as Derby try and break down their stern defence.
Cardiff concede few goals, but do not score many either. They have had good recent results against Reading and Brighton. Cardiff will be a danger from set pieces so the Rams will need to be fully focused and get to the ball first.
I hope I'm wrong, but with this being the start of a very difficult run of fixtures, I am going to predict a 1-1 draw.
If I listen to my heart Derby will win 2-1.
Head or Heart…? We will see…!

Leeds drawn at home to Harrogate in the FA Cup Tonight’s draw for the third round of the FA Cup threw up several local derbies, and the most enticing of all must be our all-Yorkshire clash with Harrogate Town, with the two clubs being only 15 miles apart.
Disappointing Leeds go down at Blackburn Our defeat to Blackburn Rovers has caused plenty of moaning on social media, while Daniel Farke has blamed our hectic fixture schedule. But it was a shame the team picked the game with our biggest travelling support of the season to serve up one of their worst away performances.
Blackburn Awaydaze This season’s trip to Blackburn Rovers is tomorrow with kick-off at 1.30, provided the pitch has dried out enough after last week’s postponement. Once again it looks like we’ll be taking the biggest away following in the Championship this season.
Farke sees room for improvement despite victory Leeds duly went back to the top of the table with a fairly routine victory over Luton Town, but Daniel Farke thought the win should have been even more emphatic when he spoke to the BBC after the game.
Leeds fighting spirit wins through as we beat Swansea to go top Leeds were twice behind in this incredible game at Swansea City, and then seemed to have victory snatched away right at the death. But each time we fought back and our sheer determination finally secured the victory that we needed to finish the weekend on top of the Championship.
Swansea Awaydaze Our visit to Swansea City is on Sunday with a 3pm kick-off, and once again we’re being televised live on Sky Sports, which will be handy for those of us who can’t get to South Wales on a Sunday.
Farke complains bitterly about Firpo suspension We had a surprise yesterday morning, as we found out that that Junior Firpo had been given a three match suspension as a result of an incident in the match at Millwall. Our manager has complained about the short notice when he was preparing his team to face QPR, and about the FA’s process itself.
Leeds labour to victory over stubborn QPR We made hard work of winning this game, but we finally put the match beyond Queens Park Rangers with a second goal deep into injury time, sending the visitors to the bottom of the table.
Farke happy with the performance despite defeat Daniel Farke has claimed that his team were excellent last night, but many others disagree, after we failed to get past an organised defence yet again, and Millwall were able to hang on to all three points.
Millwall Awaydaze On Wednesday night we can once again look forward to another fun-packed visit to Millwall on Sunday with kick off at 7.45. You’ll find the New Den in a really pleasant part of South-East London, but if you’re not heading this way, there is always the option of watching the game live on Sky Sports plus.
