Ron Vlaar Linked Again

Let's link again, like we did last summer, let's link again like we did last year as Ron Vlaar is rumoured to be coming to St Mary's

Ron Vlaar is a free agent in a few weeks and is believed to have turned down a move to Turkish club Besiktas fuelling rumours that he is about to finally make a move to Southampton as was strongly predicted last summer.

I'm not sure how well this will go down with Saints supporters as Vlaar had a god awful game for Villa at St Mary's a few weeks ago making more than a few suggest that it was lucky that we didn't sign him.

However it was an injury hit year for Vlaar and he never quite played to the standard that had earned him the nickname Concrete Ron by Villa fans.

He is still being linked with Manchester United however having just turned 30 he may not be the attraction he was to Van Gaal paving the way to join up with his old Feyenoord boss Ronald Koeman.

Certainly central defence is an area that Saints need to tighten up in, whilst Jose Fonte and Toby Alderweireld were outstanding last season, the reality is that Florin Gardos is not up to the standard yet and Yoshida is not good enough for the number of games he was required to play in 2014/15

Saints need to have 3 Premier quality central defenders and Vlaar could fit the bill for one of those positions, although personally I would also like to see us sign a third central defender to go alongside Fonte and Vlaar.
