Saints have made a bid to bring a defender South from Anfield to St Mary's on loan, however unless there is a last minute change of mind by Liverpool it looks like the deal wont happen.

Liverpool have rejected an approach from Southampton to sign Neco Williams on loan.

The Anfield academy graduate is seen as important backup to Trent Alexander Arnold at right-back.

Wales international Williams has made four Premier League and three Champions League appearances this season.

Saints have been trying hard to find another defender but have found dead-ends in their pursuits of Manchester United's Brandon Williams, Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Tottenham Hotspur's Japhet Tanganga.

It also looks like Josh King will not be arriving at St Mary's either.

So far it hasn't looked a good day for Saints as the transfer deadline approaches and it could be that they end the evening without bringing in any new faces.

I mean I wouldn’t be too surprised if we sign nobody today meaning that we’ve signed no one whatsoever in this transfer market! But really at the end of the day if we did manage to sign one player, I’d just hope that it would a be a left back to cover for Bertrand seeing that Vokins has left now.

Saintsforeverj added 21:21 - Feb 1 Letting Vokins go, without being certain of a replacement is very shabby, if this ends up being the case. One left back in the whole club? An injury crisis? And yet we leave it to the very last day of the transfer window to make some last minute attempts to get in some cover. This won't go down well, I don't think!
