Saints At FC Midtjylland The Verdict
Friday, 28th Aug 2015 12:39

There is no simple way to say this, the performance was simply unacceptable for a so called Premier League team.

Usually I try to take some plus points from a defeat, but its hard to think of even one from a performance that was quite frankly unacceptable, an old phrase in football is don't leave the field with regrets and our players must have needed carrier bags to carry theirs off.

The game followed exactly the same pattern as the first leg in Southampton with the Danes well organised and from the off employing any underhand trick that they could to gain an advantage, even the ballots were in on the act.

The referee could have done a lot more to stop their cheating, but did it change the result ? no the defeat was all of our own making.

In fairness it was another vital game where everything goes wrong before a ball is kicked, injuries to Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mane adding to the problem, but we still had enough quality players to do the job.

In fact the ONLY bright thing I can think of is that usually after a catastrophic game such as this Saints bounce back with a vengeance.

The Europa League tour is over now, we need to put it behind us and pull together as a club whether we are players or supporters.

I think that gpsgm has my point. There is nothing to be gained and much to be lost from blaming the management or moaning about the team, still less in whining about the result. We were all disappointed but I am sure that the players and management felt the same way. What is important is that they should learn from this and put in a better performance next match. Its happened before and there is no reason why it shouldn't happen again.

Keep the faith people!

No Europe to play in what do we need a big squad of players for now? Time to get a team together as we have done for the last few years and with half a dozen to step in as reserve for out of form or injury.

So perhaps we should be offloading players galore not buying more and I don't think we are going to see a magical transformation if Van Dyck does join.

It maybe is time for a clean out. Pelle tadic targett JWP for a start

This was the worst Saints performance I can remember in many years. The defence, the midfield and in attack: each area was completely disjointed - there seemed no cohesion. Martina and Target were very poor on the wings. Target has no pace and Martina passed the ball backwards far too often nullifying our attack.
Worryingly this is the worst performance I've seen from a Premiership club this season. The good news: We are bound to improve dramatically on this performance after all its still early days.

Agree with most of what has been said above, though not with the ultra negatives who seem to have floated suddenly to the surface after lengthy silences when we were doing so well last year.

But there are things that have become obvious in the last four games (while we have scored just one penalty) that have been disastrously lacking

1. too much space conceded in midfield
2 insufficient cover from our defensive midfielders
3. no creative No.10 (this has been the case for ages - we could have bought Payet or Cabaye this summer - perhaps Clasie will deliver this) We do not play balls into the channels and have no player (apart from fleeting glimpses from Tadic) of anyone capable of playing between the lines
4. woeful lack of accurate passing
5. even worse quality of balls into the opposition box
6. poor pressing game
7. pathetic shooting (wonder what our shots on target stat is just now)
8. static defending
9. no adequate replacement for Toby (still would like to know how/who cocked this up so disastrously)
10. negligible movement

To my rough arithmetical calculations the money that we have gained from transfers since RK arrived less the money we have spent on incoming transfers is quite considerable and does not include any money that must have been budgeted over the last two years for transfers which remains untouched at a time when the TV income has continued to shoot upwards. That seems to say it all!

A shadow of the team we saw last season.

We won't get away with selling our best players this season.

Yoshida is not PL quality by a long stretch.

Now we are bound to ask the elephant in the room question, Midtjylland better tan Norwich? I don't think so. Who's been telling Porkies Ronald?

At least our despised nemesis Mauricio was up front about it... "The Europa League doesn't interest me!"
