Manchester United To Offer Saints Player Swap Deal For Clyne
Tuesday, 14th Apr 2015 16:38

According to the latest rumours in the press Manchester United are set to offer Saints players in exchange for Nathaniel Clyne.

Nathaniel Clyne is generating almost as much transfer gossip as Luke Shaw did a year ago and Manchester United are reportably ready to trade players as well as cash in order to give themselves an advantage over their rivals in the bid to persuade Saints to part with the right back.

Saints apparently value Clyne at £20 million although that could go up if as many clubs are after the ex Palace man as are rumoured in the media.

Supposedly United are ready to dangle Javier Hernandez as a carrot to persuade Saints to do business with them in the summer, Hernadez has been on loan at Real Madrid all season although is season in Spain has not been as successful as he would have hoped and it looks likely that Real will not take up the option to buy him when the spell ends next month and that he will return to Old Trafford.

Saints were of course rumoured to have been interested last summer but given the choice of Real Madrid or a club who were supposedly in meltdown it probably wasn't a difficult choice for the Mexican.

However he doesnt seem to have a future with the Old Trafford club and they will try to offload him again for season 2015/16 for a permanent move involving a fee, but with Hernandez being in the last year of his contract next season, how much that fee is likely to be is negligible and when you add to the fact that the wages the player is on now are likely to be wellin excess of anything he would get elsewhere its likely he will not be in a hurry to move on a permanent deal.

Therefore if he goes to Saints the fee is likely to be a fraction of anything that the club get in return for Clyne, so the value to Saints may not be monetary but in the leverage in getting United to apply pressure on Hernandez to move South, but as we have seen in the past, a player moving under duress often does not make for a good piece of business.

The reality is that Nathaniel Clyne is biding his time, perhaps if Saints get into the Champions league he will want to stay, but he will be well aware of the interest in him and that being the case his bargaining power will be far greater then.

Not sure about cast-offs from Man U, unless it was someone exciting like Januzaj who might pick-up his career at a club like ours. Hernandez didn't want to come before, so can't see why he would now. Would rather see players who wanted to play for us.

I share bstokesaint concern. I only want players that want to join us to come to us, not because some deal etc has effectively forced them to - we know where that ends up, as we have found out to our cost. If we lose Clyne, and to be honest, I wish all this would wait until the end of the season, let us get the maximum fee for him and use the money on who we want and not on who someone wants to get rid of.

So, totally agree with both of the above why sell 20m player for someone another team doesn't want. Austin would be a good shout or Ings half the price and a quality players. We will see what happens.

Careful here. He is a proven goalscorer in the premier league. He plays amazingly for his country (because he starts and is backed) - 39 goals in 70 matches, and they play decent teams.

OK, there's a risk. He is hitting his prime - 26 years old - and he may see himself as too big a star to play during his prime at Southampton, but if we get him plus £10 million with his re-sale value alone probably reaching near £10 million after two years then I don't think the gamble is too big.

This is a guy who has been top goalscorer for a country that has qualified past the group stages in the last 5 world cups. He was good at united - chased down, pulled defenders and had an ability to score poacher's goals.

Give him a chance, IF he wants to come.

Like Nick says, we have to look to do good business and not be put off by players other teams don't want, because that's were most of the best deals come from!

bit their hand off! Clyne wants to go, that is obvious. And he is a proven goalscorer! Yes he probably wouldnt say saints his is first choice, but be honest, we are a fairly small south coast club. how many players (except fans), would say saints is first choice? but we live in the real world, so if using another player as collateral, you do it

Totally agree with ElSanto and Schatfield, he is a quality proven goal scorer and I would love to see him at Saints, he is the natural poacher finisher that we need BUT only if he wants to be here next season which I think he might now as we are a different prospect now. I can totally understand him picking Real over Saints last Summer, in the real world and taking away our Saints loyalties we would pick the best job prospect too with the best wages at one of the biggest clubs in the world but now at this point in his career regular first team football at a great football club with incredible facilities may appeal. COYS!!!

About to enter the final year of his contract
Is on massive wages (for Saints at least)
Has had a year off, training with the best players in the world
Had a great scoring record for club and country, prior to this season

Not sure he is in the best shape now, but worth a risk if we can get him for a knock down price (£5m ?) as part of a Clyne deal - who I value at offers in excess of £20m.

He didn't want to come to us before, but perhaps if he comes now and starts scoring, some of the big boys will start chasing him and he will be putting himself in the shop window - albeit whilst under a Saints contract !!

This is risible, Man U are the No 1 abusers of FFP and even FIFA might have to apply sanctions against them on further transfers so as to be seen to be applying the rules fairly. This could mean swapping players may be the only way Man U can do business this summer especially if there are no takers for any of their expensive rejects!

If we can't get cash for Clyne from Man U then sell him to somebody who can buy for cash. If Clyne ends up at a club he doesn't fancy, so what, that's his problem not ours.
