J Rod Edges Closer Friday, 8th Jun 2012 01:40
Jay Rodriguez looks set to be a Southampton Player by the weekend in a move from Burnley that will smash Saints transfer record set over a decade ago.
Its been 11 years since Saints paid out a record fee of four million pounds for Rory Delap from Derby County, but that could be finally overtaken with Jay Rodriguez on the verge of joining the club from Burnley, Saints supporters will be heartened by the signing which they hope will spell intent from the club for the coming season, whilst few Saints fans want to see money splashed out on overpriced over rated big money signings on silly wages, the same majority woul also acknowledge that decent money does needto be spent ifthe club are to compete next season and players like Rodiguez who fits the player profile for Nigel Adkins of young and hungry.

I havent seen enough of him to form an opinion - although we really need pace to be able to get in behind teams in the top league, so I hope he is quick ( quicker than he looks). I also saw some stats last season and Burnley had more shots by a mile than anyone else in the league - may infer that J Rod makes chances, may also infer he isnt so clinical. He certainly wont be on the pens when Lambert is on the pitch. He was in the champ team of the year of course and sure he can play - just the big league is a slightly different ball game. To classify for me as hungry - I'd have liked him to be named and at the club within 24 hours. This blown our saga while he suns himself in Mexico has not given me the impression he is overly hungry (and I know more than many where you can travel in 24 hrs). Really hope he is the real deal as it is a lot of money...

So is the idea to have Sharp & Lee as back-up? I was looking forward to seeing genuine pace in Lee this season. I would have thought that a quick strong experienced centre back would be the priority signing.

For me coming to us would show a real test of character, I.e. uprooting from up north to come to a team with big aspirations, but little in the way of any recent Premiership track record. I fear Everton will hijack this deal. It'll mean Premiership safety, but be a less exciting ride.
