In the Summer of 1968 the Russian led Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia took place.
As a Soldier of the British Army of the Rhine stationed In West Germany, pretty much all hell let loose and before we knew It we were In the armoured personnel carriers and out of the barracks and dug In fully expecting an Invasion.
Instead of boozing and smoking cheap marijuana In the barracks we were dug In individual trenches In the pouring rain looking to the East and yep crapping ourselves.
They never came the only noise we could here was the Platoon NCO reminding us to keep a careful eye on our rifles' safety catch and the sound of our Chieftain tanks taking up they're positions, you looked at your mate and his face said ''f uck'', and he was right.
Two nights and days we were out there before being stood down and returned to barracks. The Warsaw pact had people watching us and how we would respond, this was different though. I had huge respect for Alexander Dubcek.
The late Sixties were scary times, we trained relentlessly we watched films of how the Russians would invade the West.
I watch bits and pieces of news feeds but I find them a little bit biased, I would say that the Ukrainian military have done brilliantly, I'm not sure that they can hang on though for much longer.
The Russian army have performed poorly the river crossing before Xmas was a disaster for them.
It's strange to me that the leaders of Countries can sit In front of TV cameras and talk shyte but cant sit around a negotiating table and talk peace or as a minimum agree a ceasefire, of course nothing Is that easy/straight forward.
Ukraine need and ask for more military supplies, Russia have been using North Korean bullets and foot soldiers with the deaths of inexperienced North Korean soldiers Increasing daily.
Always the poor squaddie who never gets back home to his village, parents/Families.
There was I believe 9 minutes of added time basically giving us 99 minutes of football In which to put the football into the Sheffield United's net three time, Ifso factso winning the game.
Every week once we've lost a game It's the same old twaddle on here about crap officials.
Stéphane Mbia, useless gangling bastard turnip, the pratt unnecessarily gave away a free kick against Wigan In the dying seconds, a game we were winning 1-0 and desperate to win too and lo and behold the Wigan player dispatched the free kick Into our net In the 90th minute. Almost to a Man (or Woman) the entire loft got up and walked out.
Yes all of this, I was In my older brothers car when the sports news came on after the main news and they said that Rodney had been sold to Man City, In them days car radios were pretty shit so I refused to believe It up to the point where my older Brother said If I didnt shut the fck up he'd stop the car and beat me up.
I was honestly distraught, beyond consoling I just couldn't believe It, I didnt think those things happened.
Celebrating with the City fans was mental, If results hadn't gone the way they did then we were gonna have to fight our way out of Manchester.
I never got to meet my Lad up there that day, he got home sometime the next day.
