Pep on the EFL Cup
at 21:07 25 Sep 2024

Sphericals! If you are a professional football club competing in this country, you are professionally required to participate in all PL-/FA-/EFL-adminstered competitions fielding, when last I heard, your strongest team. The trouble is the authorities no longer have any authority/credibility in ensuring this is the case, having pissed on their own bonfires over any number of years.

If Citeh and the rest (the culpability is of course endemic and percolates down the football pyramid - Klopp, for one, was almost as bad) want to spit on the EFL Cup from their obscene height, fine, in my view, they should be massively fined, removed from other competitions too, or both.

He's the CEO. As far as I know, we don't have a DoF, post-Les.

A bit harsh to say the least - are you feeling pre-menstrual or something else? Perhaps he's just got a better job! Good luck to the guy, either way.

I was (am) already nervous and don't expect the ref's performance to significantly change anything.

Amusingly, I note the online form opens a drop-down menu where one can answer 'no' to the question as to whether one wishes to attend. (Doing so presumably makes filling in the rest of it redundant, one would assume - unless the club's assembling some kind of blacklist of nay-sayers.)

Pet peeve: Why does football always say 'before a ball was kicked in anger' rather than, say, 'in earnest' or, here's an idea, 'in joy'?

As Beckett said, 'the essential doesn't change'. There are clearly indefeasible market/professional forces that mean beer at QPR can never/neither be sanely priced or poured. Lee Hoos explained it all to us before he mercifully stepped down (or aside).

All of which are great questions, no? Now Nourry has taken over football matters, perhaps he can answer one or two.

Call me old-fashioned, but what business are 'football matters' of CN anyway? That's the province of the coach/manager (or was for decades at least).

β€œThe next round, I announce you, I play the second team,” said Guardiola. β€œWe are not going to waste energy, for sure.”

What an utter c*nt!

Does the EFL really have such contempt for their own competition that they're happy to allow this public cynicism to be amplified without censure?

Let's hope the PL find that horrible pseudo-club guilty of all 115+ charges and dump them out of professional competition pdq!

I can't see this squad in the top half, I'm afraid. 12th-16th is probably how it'll play out. We lack quality, creativity and cutting edge.

Football clubs treating fans as idiots/inconveniences (while blowing smoke up our arses whenever possible) - blow me down with a blue and white feather! Fans are the abused children of the game - told we're 'special', and more often than not treated like sh*t!
It's why I conduct my fandom with a certain psychological distance (as well as mad passion), these days, though I wish the years hadn't forced me to.

Excellent post, and a crucial distinction to boot.

PS Beckett would have approved, who also wrote of QPR: 'there's man all over for you - blaming on his boots the fault of his feet'!

Jesus Christ - how can he be suspended already? We've only just started the season, ffs!

How many of Colback's yellow/red cards are avoidable (dissent, mnoaning etc.)? And why isn't Marti having a word with him about acting his age and not his boot size, or is he just dumb/entitled to take it on board? He's not quite as deranged as Jack Torrance in The Shining, but he's obviously a bit touched, and reminds me a lot of Barton. Not helped by the big whiff of resentment he gives off at playing for us at Champ level.

So much for the likes of Sinton giving it the tired cliche about wanting your experienced players on the pitch! What's the value in that if half the time they're not? All the more frustrating as when he's on it, he's a great help, but how often has he been? One or two games since he's been here?

I feel like I'm turning into him just by thinking about him!

Their goal today

It was shocking, however you cut the cake. We had five back v their three, but that includes Madsen tarting around like a lemon (tart) and Field marking thin air and ending up in the back of the net. Surprised Marti didn't call it out in his post-match interview. Utterly embarrassing, as I hope Clive will be highlighting in his report!

Whoops, didn't quite think that through.

Of course Cook, but I'm also reluctant to omit Dunne.

Can I play 12?

Our wingers/no.10(s) conundrum
at 00:02 22 Sep 2024

When Chair's back, we'll have four of 'em: Smyth, Saito, Dembele and our little electric piece of furniture. Four into two, or three at most, won't go. Will Madsen need to be one who makes way? Put it another way, and after today's non-event, is this going to be our strongest team/shape?

Nardi
Santos Dunne JCS Paal
Field Colback
Smyth Chair/Dembele Saito
Frey

Subs Jaysus, Madsen, Alfie, Varane, Kolli, Walsh et al.
