Where are these players who have the work rate and attitude of Field, Smyth and Cook but can also pop it about? Presumably if Field and co can carve out a decent career at championship level, the players you're talking about would be playing at premier league level or certainly at parachute club money level. We got lucky with Morgan and there's bound to be interest in him from bigger clubs over the summer. We've shown we're not very good at spending money on players. We could very easily replace three hard working top pros with a bunch of Madsens and Dozzells. It's interesting that when a few results go against us, suddenly these players aren't up to it. I believe the truth is that games are won and lost on pretty fine margins. If Fox didn't switch off for the second goal then we're probably looking at a different result. If Paal's free kick against Wednesday goes in the top corner rather than hitting the post then we probably win that game. We've been on the wrong side of those fine margins the last two games. Hopefully we get it right on Tuesday. |

There'll be the usual overreactions on here but for me it comes down to the second goal. We gifted it to them and then invited them to see the game out. We've played worse and won this season. Subs worked well. Some brave decisions need to be made. Chair shouldn't start on Tuesday. Cook and Morrison back as CB. Edwards did okay at RB and will be interesting to see if this kid from Chelsea can replace Paal at LB. I'm not sure I'll be able to sit through another 90 minutes of Paal corners on Tuesday without totally losing my mind. |

How many awful corners does Paal need to take before we try someone else? |

We no longer have the out ball to Dunne high up the pitch on the right. Struggling to break the press |

I think that's where we'll soon end up. Those two were very solid earlier in the season. |

Watching replay of goals, both are a shambles. First one only falls to Millwall player after the other striker scuffs a shot. Bit like our luck earlier in the season. Second goal there were lots of errors. Chair not working hard enough to get back and support Paal. Paal not doing well enough to stop the cross. 3 QPR player being beaten by a small Millwall player partly because Morgan had dropped too deep and got in the way of the centre backs. Finally, Fox is the biggest culprit when for some unknown reason he simply watches the ball rather than attacking it. It was his ball all day long. Very disappointing. Other than that there's nothing in it. Will be difficult to break them down in the second half though. |

Not sure that's the truth. Probably offered him a good offer within our wage structure but Sheffield United can probably get close to doubling that. If we get £2million that's a good price for someone with only 6 months left. Horrible to see him go but teams up and down the country are having their better players pinched off them by teams higher up. It's the natural order of things. |

I'd like to see Cook and Morrison back in defence. Cook brings leadership and Morrison is our most promising young defender. Chair needs games to find his form so I'd start with him but have subs ready earlier than we did v Wednesday. |

We all see things differently. I thought the first half was one of the more boring halves we've seen in a while. Generally thought we looked tired. Especially down the flanks. Didn't think Paal was great. Quite a few wayward passes and generally abysmal corners. Lovely free kick and a decent shot towards the end. If Smyth and Chair are both off it then we're fairly toothless. Took ages to get the subs on which was a bit frustrating as we allowed them to get control of the game. Smyths attempted clearance which turned into an assist for the first goal was clearly not what he intended. Tried to punt it down the line but scuffed it into the middle of the pitch straight to Bannon. Bannon's ball into the box was inch perfect as you'd expect. Disappointing day but we had to lose at some point. |

It was a bizarre few minutes on the pitch for him. He needs a spell away from the first team. With injured players coming back he's third choice right back at a pinch. Anyone know what is wrong with JCS? Getting a bit annoying that he can't seem to manage more than a couple of games without breaking down again. That being said, Fox is currently doing a good job at centre back. |

Lovely and quiet on here this evening. Hope the 2000 who made the journey thoroughly enjoyed their day and it made up for the disappointment of last week. [Post edited 18 Jan 17:44]

I don't think anyone has said they think he's doing us a favour. Quite a few are just pointing out that he's done okay in the last few games as back but up to Dunne. He's our reserve right back who has had a run of games because of injuries to others. He's played his part in recent victories just like all the other players and we didn't lose yesterday just because of him. |

Post third round results over the last ten years suggest there's about as much chance we beat them as we they beat us. Like most games in the championship. At least we go there with our best recent 11 well rested and injury free. If you travelled to Leicester and you're travelling to Plymouth for lunchtime next Saturday then I totally understand why you might be a bit more pessimistic. |

Yep. Definitely not in the Laird or Roberts camp. Think it was the second half in the Watford game he was throwing himself into tackles and blocks. He's not great, possibly a bit overconfident in his abilities but he doesn't hide and he tries his best when needed as cover for Dunne. No need for all the abuse. It's possible to express frustration with a player's performance without resorting to insults. |

I think he'll probably be loaned back to Belgium or similar standard league. We'll have to swallow some of his wages. Bad bit of business. Happens sometimes. At least Varane and Nardi are proving to be very good signings and Morgan is an absolute gem. You win some you lose some. |

There are plenty who have absolute clarity when we lose and know exactly what went wrong and how it could have been avoided. The same who after most wins will say we were lucky and got away with one. |

Had a quick look at results post resting players for third round. I was surprised to find that over the last 10 seasons we've won four or five, drawn a couple and lost three or four. We remember the losses more than the wins so we build this narrative that we always lose after resting players. It's not true. However, given the mixed nature of the results, you could say that resting players didn't make much difference to the next game. We'll never know. Clive called for a bit more balance in his new years message and maybe a little needed here. |

Missed most of the game today. Just watched the highlights. Given the absolute meltdowns on here I was actually expecting worse from Ashby. Yes, he's done horribly where he tries to cut inside and gets robbed. Stupid error and he needs to cut that out. Penalty I thought was a bit unlucky. He's sliding in to try and block the cross. Not sure he has all that much control of where his arms are. Saito gives the ball away very cheaply in the build up to that one. Didn't look as bad overall as the Fox horror show against Portsmouth. Edwards looked a bit shaky on his full debut. The addition of Jimmy Dunne at right back next week should help him and hopefully JCS will be fit enough to play a few games in a row. |
| Forum Reply | Ashby. at 18:56 11 Jan 2025
Interesting that this horror show coincides with Saito playing in front of him rather than Smyth and Paal's recent improvement coincides with Chair coming back into the side. Saito gets a pass from everyone because he's a lovely happy chap but he's not great at supporting his full back defensively and is also not first choice material if both Chair and Smyth are fit. |
