I too thought the Arctic Monkeys performed well on Friday. Don't know too much about them, but I know enough to see they are one of the few remaining bands emerging from an ever growing sterile circus that makes music of many genres so dull these days. You cannot compare them to the Stones though. The Stones are unique. What other rock band has held it together for 50 years? The Who are not far behind, but are they a band anymore? You could throw Status Quo into the mix if you count their early incarnation. I doubt very much The Arctic Monkey's will be together for a fraction as long, as good as they may well be.
I saw out the show on TV last night with Mumford and Sons. I don't mind a bit of folk/rock now and then, but blimey, were that lot singing the same song for over two hours? Tedious or what? A good example of how music has become so blatantly bland these days.
Look to the oldies and the dead for inspiration I say.
So who do you think will/should headline next year?
I can see Florence getting a go next year, and maybe Kasabian. Radiohead must be due to tour next year. Those three maybe the most likely.
I'd like to see Prince again though, but maybe he's a bit unreliable these days? He's add a bit of variety/old fashioned showmanship to proceedings.
Kasabian - Friday Prince - Saturday Florence and the Machine - Sunday.
That wouldn't be too bad.
The Smiths need to reform, pronto. I must be getting old as I'd only really go if they had something like Weller, The Smiths and The Stone Roses headlining each day. Other than that, I'd camp out in the dance tent and go hardcore EDM for 3 days.

Saw most of the Johnny Marr set on the telly - thought he was still pretty good at the Smiths stuff, even the singing. Is Morrissey fit enough to reform them though?

can't see it happening. Didn't Morrissey alledgedly say he'd like to see mike joyce dead. Sure I saw that somewhere.
Me neither. I've never understood the attraction, have never bought any of their music. Just a bit "meh" for me, really. I saw a bit of last night's coverage and seemed a it dull and derivative. My mates thought I was being harsh, glad to see I'm not the only one.
The thing is, they've done a few different styles of music. I think lots of their stuff is mediocre, some more just rubbish. Some other tracks, however, right up there in the all time greatest songs.

The only time I want to Glastonbury was in 93 IIRC and they had put in the rave tent for what I think was the first time. Needless to say I spend a LOAD of time in it. Saw a few good bands, some everage, some poor but there was always fun in that tent.
In fact when I went to the Big Chill a few years later I spent more time at the Armitage Shanks dance tent than anything else.
There's some miserable feckers on here. It would be a pretty dull festival if it only put on the bands that appeal to the posters on this thread. If you don't like the headliners, go and find something else to watch. There was plenty of variety if you were prepared to look. From what I saw, on TV, The Arctic Monkeys, Ben Howard, Example, Tame Impala and the Strypes were good. The Stones, Mumfords, Loudon Wainwright, Tom Odell, Laura Mvula, Primal Scream were so so. And Sunday afternoon you had young and old singing along to Kenny Rogers' songs. The guy can no longer sing and the music is cheesy as hell, but a lot of people were having FUN. I might try and catch up with some of the bands I would like to have seen but missed, like Chic, Editors and Everything Everything.

Find me on twitter @derbyhoop and now on Bluesky

talking of the strypes. Think they could be the new stones. hard to believe some of them are fifteen and sixteen years of age.

Fair enough. I'd have gone to see Teleman, born out of the ashes of Pete and The Pirates (who were sensational two years ago at Camp Bestival).

One of them is still at school. For a retro style 60's type r n b/beat group they are pretty good though I wish they would slow down a tad, as some their covers of old r n b standards they do live become a messy incoherent noise. But they are young and raw and still have loads to learn. Playing at Glastonbury at their stage is an achievement in itself, just as much as the accolades they have been recieving from guitar greats such as Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. As someone mentioned in another post about them a few months back, the proof in the pudding to their success in the future lies squarely in their ability to write their own stuff, a bit like the Stones had to.
From what I saw of Glastonbury on TV, much of the musical fare on offer was mediocre or unappealing to myself. I liked the Stones, the Arctic Monkeys, Alabama Shakes [ a new album please ] and Primal Scream were ok even if their music is rip off Stones circa 1968/1970 style stuff. The festival, primarily is a musical one still, catering for all genres and ages. There is a lot more choice now than there used to be, whether that's a plus point is down to personal opinion. All I know is that it is a lot more expensive, organised and commercialised now than when I last went. I doubt I would want to go now. I prefer smaller festivals that cater for a particular type of music or bands.
Yeah we had a good chat about the Strypes as you say. I do think that they need to write their own stuff if they're going to hit the big time. They're still young enough - the Monkeys headlined in 2007 when Turner was 21 and McCartney was 21 when the Beatles really got big and Jagger was 21 when the Stones broke through to the big league. The likes of Weller were the same sort of age.
Example was fahkin shocking. Talking over prescriptive "urban beats" not knowing if he was trying to be Mike Skinner, Eminem or Dizzee Rascal. And he's a Fulham supporting khant.

Professor Green (whoever he is) was worse. Occasionally shouting out some meaningless urban crap whilst one of the backing singers was doing quite a decent job.

Yes, shocking waste of all the musical talent on stage around him.
Pete & the Pirates a fine band. The Hushpuppies; similar imo and very good, even if they are French.
Finally. Someone else who has heard of the Pirates. I am suffering from a minor addiction. After stumbling across them at Camp Bestival I spent the next three months with Little Death welded in to the CD player in my car. Much to my wife's irritation.
Recently got Spotify going in the house. Cue endless plays of A Thousand Pictures.

I'll check out the Hushpuppies......:-)
I used to play Rugby for London Cornish. I know it's not quite London Scottish, but...

I saw the Stones in Hyde Park in 69, about a week after Brian Jones died. I think that was the first time Taylor played guitar for them? (might be wrong)
They were shit hot that day, and have been a few times since.
Maybe they are nicking a pension these days, although I doubt they need the dough, or maybe they just enjoy doing it.......either way good luck to them.
Talking about nicking a pension.........we've got more than enough scuzbuckets wearing our shirt trying to do the same thing.
Still, f**k 'em, they're not getting a single penny of my dough.
