10 Greatest Players In Saints History Ranked 08:28 - Feb 5 with 2707 views | SaintNick | I read this on the internet, what does everyone think. 1. Matt Le Tissier 2. Peter Shilton 3. Alan Ball 4.Ron Davies 5. Mick Channon 6.Terry Paine 7. Rickie Lambert 8.Virgil Van Dijk 9.Alan Shearer 10. Kevin Keegan In fairness the top 10 isn't too bad, but putting Alan Ball above Mick Channon, Ron Davies & Terry Paine is not right, those 3 alongside Le Tiss are probably our greatest ever players in terms of both talent & contribution for the club, after those four its all a bit less clear. On the rems of both talent and contribution to the club you can't argue with most of them, the only one I would dispute is Virgil Van Dijk, for the short time he was at the club he was probably one of, if not The best Central defender that we have ever had , but in his 3 seasons at the club (effectively 2 because of his injury) he played just 67 League games, so from that perspective he doesn't fit the bill, Mark Wright & Chris Nicholl would be in my top 10 before him, Van Dijk most will grudgingly admit is a quality player but not a Saints legend https://www.givemesport.com/greatest-southampton-players-in-football-history/ | ![](/images/avatars/1032.gif) |

I remember Franny Benali playing half a game with a broken arm, that's commitment. You don't have to be a great player to be a legend. Franny was not only a local lad he was a legend for us. | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Bit harsh on Ron methinks. Reeves had a prolific, spectacular goal record, however I believe this was mostly lower leagues (div 3) and failed to replicate this in the second division. Wayman, whilst being one of Saints’ first main stars - up the middle for charlie etc - surely he is trumped by Ron!!? Can’t comment fully due to never seeing any play other than highlights of few - many would have seen Ron, but not the others so maybe they’re legend. Just think what we had in Davies was one of the greatest at the time and with 37 goals in his first top division season for the club, multiple times top goalscorer in the top division… I note Channon was the same, even when relegated. But you recognise him as no. 1. | ![](/images/avatars/33270.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Channons partnership with Keegan was the best I have ever seen. | ![](/images/avatars/2053.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

And most games it looked like he was playing with a broken leg as well. That's commitment for you. | ![](/images/avatars/1800.gif) |

Undoubtedly and our greatest side? Or would you say after Keegan left? Either way, probably our best attack ahead of Sydenham - Davies - Paine But i’m still interested why Reeves / Wayman are above Ron for you? | ![](/images/avatars/33270.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Franny would have carried on with 2 broken legs. In those days every team needed a Franny. OK he wouldn't have figured in our top ten legends but in his own right he was a club legend. | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) | Login to get fewer ads

Reeves was Saints top scorer for 4 consecutive seasons which hasn't been beaten. Wayman scored 73 times in his 100 games for us. You do have a point about Ron,he was the best header of a ball I have ever seen for Saints and I would have to move him to number 4. | ![](/images/avatars/2053.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |
10 Greatest Players In Saints History Ranked on 10:47 - Feb 6 with 339 views | GRIM | What's happened to our great club. Why haven't we had any great players or anyone that would get into our top ten legends for the last 5 or more years. There is not one player in our current squad that will be regarded as a club legend in the future. Also who was the the last Manager we had that could ever be regarded as a club legend. I can only think of two, Big Lawrie & Ted Bates. You'll probably remind me of a few more. | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Sadly I am not quite old enough to remember some of these. Plus i was quite a late starter with footie compared to many. In my lifetime of attending matches I would pick... 1.Matt Le Tissier 2.Mick Channon 3.Peter Shilton 4.Marian Pahars 5.Steve Williams 6.Ivan Golac 7.Steve Moran 8.Nick Holmes 9.Rickie Lambert 10.Antti Niemi Probably would re think that given time, and will confess a lot of choices come from wistful thinking of the good old days and the favourites of that time. Still, it will raise some eyebrows I am sure, which is always good for some healthy debating. | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Because no one stays for longer than five seconds, unless they’re crap. But still, even from what i’ve seen has been good enough, quality wise; VVD being one - probably the best i’ve seen live and he was on our team. Ings was most loved until he f*cked off. | ![](/images/avatars/33270.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |
