Its not.

The languages do enjoy equal status in public sector bodies when dealing with citizens.
But in areas not dealing with citizens … then its a choice.

Currently, private companies can decide themselves what kind of Welsh language services such as signage and translation services they can offer.

There really should be language standards for national private bodies, such as banks which operate on a national level in Wales.

Some companies such as Lidl provide equal Welsh and English signage in stores, with announcements being made in Welsh before English. However, this is not the standard in the private sector. Water, energy and bus companies are not obliged to provide services in Welsh.

But i welcome your support for true language parity.

It is but I'll leave that with you to ponder on .

only now seeing this thread,

I must say I feel proud and settled living in a community where the Welsh language is not only thriving but is as natural as breathing,

I am only a ten minute drive down the M4 from Abertawe too.

Hope you all have a great evening, the last of 2024.

Blwyddyn Newydd dda pawb.

My methods are not favoured by some but by god i speak the truth.

There are 10 Welsh medium primary schools and 2 large Welsh medium secondary schools in the Swansea area which are very popular.
26000 people in Swansea speak Welsh which is 12% of the population, granted it is a smaller number than the national average but it is not a small number.

There are 102 Primary schools and 14 secondary schools in Swansea. 10% Welsh then, roughly.

There has always ben a Welsh speaking community in Swansea, there were more Welsh speakers here 50 years ago, my gran was fluent Welsh as were all her family (all dead now) and they were from Waunarlwydd, Gypsy Cross as it used to be called. At her Chapel (Mumbles tabernacle) quite a few spoke Welsh as did the vicar, back in the day. We used to sing Welsh hymns at morning assembly and my form class teacher in Dunns lane Primary was fluent Welsh, as were a few other teachers.

The number of Welsh speakers in Wales has dropped, immigration has played it's part I think but it's not entirely because of the English, there's quite a few immigrants from outside the UK here too which some people often handily forget.
