Cop 29 13:32 - Nov 12 with 1708 views | raynor94 | I see this morning Starmer has pledged to cut the UK emissions by 81% by 2035. What is the point, when the US China and India can't even be bothered to attend. No doubt we will be at the front of the queue to pay reparations to the so called poorer nations.

Cop 29 on 15:55 - Nov 12 with 795 views | majorraglan | Instead of hurtling headlong in to this, we need a balanced approach which blends sustainability with fossil fuel and a gradual reduction over time. I genuinely believe we’ll be in a better place going forward when we’re less reliant on OPEC etc, but it takes time to get there.

I would agree if every other country was genuinely trying to make the changes but too many aren't and some have actually increaded their pollution. If the UK cuts its emissions by 81% that amounts to a tiny amount of the worlds total, what are we bothering for, we are already cleaner than many other countries. All the politicians are doing is costing people a lot of money for no worthwhile gains. China for example is responsible for 32.88% of CO2 emissions, the UK....0.88% and we are spending billions to make more cuts...WHY? The cost of our utilities is high and thats after we subsidise the private firms, the government give them large amounts of money then they charge us a fortune. It's a rip off. For the UK anyway. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yep, them pesky pensioners won't dare put their heating on, although they will soon have their Christmas bonus of £10. It was introduced in 1972, and hasn't increased since, bar for year 2008 during the financial crisis, they paid out £70. The £10 of 1972 is worth £115 in today's money, pensioners are an easy target

Yes they are, people act as if these older people have never paid anything into the system yet there are millions of people who claim benefits who haven't paid in anything like as much as they get and who will qualify for the full state pensions too. Most of todays pesnioners will have actually worked and paid in yet people, and often young people, begrudge them. Those older people will also have often worked longer hours in worse conditions too. I've had about 18 months in total of unemployment and around 3 years out with ill health that will amount to about 45 years of working and paying in, assuming I make 67. I feel rather entitled to a state pension.

By the time I get my OAP I will have paid in every month for 49 years without a break, hopefully. I'll be still paying tax into retirement until I die.

Not sure what direction the US will take. In one hand, Trump is keen on oil yet on the other there’s Elon Musk with electric vehicles and a real passion for pushing solar.

That’s not what they are trying to do though. Our rivers and seas remain full of shit. We just have to spend and struggle more for the privilege now.

That money was used as soon as it was collected to pay the pensions of those who had retired at the time. How far do you think the £1.50 per week you paid in 1975 has gone? Those retired, myself included are dependent upon those in work to pay for our pensions. In effect, it is actually a benefit not a right. Let's just hope we keep a large enough workforce to maintain the funding or pensioners will have to stump up more taxes themselves.

The sea is much cleaner now than it was 20 or more years ago. The rivers also have a lot less human shit in them, it's just been replaced by cow and chicken shit.

Really? Are they cleaner thn 100 years ago? Do they have less plastic in them than 20 years ago? condorferries.co.uk/plastic-in-the-ocean-statistics#:~:text=There%20is%20an%20estimated%2075,their%20way%20into%20our%20oceans. What about all the illegal releases by water companies, is that not a lot of human shit? No matter how much more they make us pay, nothing much is improving for the majority of us.

More plastics (which also impact Climate change) but less sewage and generally cleaner. At least around Europe. The illegal releases are human, but at least now they're illegal. It's not so long ago that they weren't. The problem lies with our victorian sewage system and times of very heavy rain - it's not designed to cope with the number of people using it and periods of heavy rain. It'll cost billions to put right, arguably the biggest infrastructre project the Uk will have seen. Ironically it's us not paying enough for food is the main source of river pollution nowadays becasue the majority comes from intensive agriculture.

Well the water companies should have used the massive profits to uograde sewerage systems but they posketed most of that cash so who is to blame there? Again not us who pay large bills. As for not paying enough for food, intensive farming churns out a lot of food and a large portion of that becomes the ultra processed junk that causes so many health problems, the very junk that is put on special offer to encourage us to buy more than we need and thousands of tonnes of this "food" is dumped every year. Again, who is responsible for that, not us who pay the large bills but the corporate goons who pocket massive wages and bonuses.

I'm on 48yrs and got another 3yrs, you get you full stamp after 35yrs yet they still take it off you, if they dropped the percentage you pay would be better than nothing, but they won't it just goes towards all the money they waste on hair brain schemes, Carbon Neutral is right up there they just love robbing the hard working tax payer.

I agree. Privatising the water companies was absolute madness. Nobody should be able to make a profit of any description from water. It's a good job oxygen can't be privatised. I agree regarding ultaprocessed food too. But we need to stump up for some of the fault here, I think a burger from McDonalds should cost around £5 (a regular burger, not big Mac), 6 eggs a similar amont and a pint of milk should cost more than a pint of beer. Companies are putting pressure on the farmers and hitting their profits becasue we want them to. The farmers cut corners, mass produce stuff and destroy the planet. We want things too cheap and easily available. We're basically fat and lazy.
