Clough and Shankly's teams rarely played 60+ games per season. There is too much football. Too many greedy Governing bodies wanting their cut of the cake. There is no need for an expanded Champions League. There is no need for an expanded Club World Cup. There is no need for expanded World Cups, European Championships or Nations Leagues. Too many clubs also jetting off around the World on money spinning tours too mind. Bukayo Saka is only 23 and has already played more than 200 games. The last proper break most of them had was during Covid. Something's got to give.

There’s a huge difference in the amount of games though, and this idiot talking off the cuff. Typical kid with no life experience, going to the enth degree and not understanding communication and arbitration.

Rodri you poor little spoilt boy on 17:25 - Sep 17 with 2502 views | ReslovenSwan1 | If he is overworked it is a matter for his manager. Pep can rest him. They have 25 men squads and perhaps only half of them see game time. The other have a can stay at home and rest. Pep will argue that he cannot rest his best players because Arsenal and Liverpool do not rest their players. But those clubs do not have his resources. Some games are quite straightforward for Man city and he can send Rhodi on leave to Spain for 10 days if he wants to when they are playing Southampton or Everton.

He's right though. Unfortunately too often the reaction is that players should just shut up and play. Tired players deliver a poorer product. They get injured more often. I've seen comparisons with Tennis players. Tennis players cover about half the distance in a three hour game than most outfield footballers cover in 90 minutes, and the best do it 50-60 times over a season with only a few days break in between. Ferguson and Wenger both said similar years ago. Klopp too recently if memory serves.

Add to that peak testosterone levels with back up of nutritionalists and sports psychologists etc with recovery gaps between each game.

Rodri you poor little spoilt boy on 17:48 - Sep 17 by Dr_Winston | Did you have to pay t'mill owner for privilege of coming to work? Aston Villa won the league title in 1981 using just 14 players. Nobody made more than 46 total appearances. Again as an example, Saka last season played 61 times for club and country. First game 6th August, last game 14th July. Quite happy to be in the minority on this one. Too many games. If people want to see good quality football, then we need to stop overloading the players so some FIFA/UEFA suits can make more cash. |
Chelsea have committed Cole Palmer from their European squad specifically not to overplay him.

I do tend to agree but on the flip side, these clubs also have far squads than we used to see and can rotate. They snap up all the talent, pay them massive wages and all the managers and players do is moan. What I'd like to know is, how many hours per week do these players actually work? I cannot deny there are a lot more games and that is down to greed on the part of the governing bodies.

Plus the game is far less physical. They should appreciate what they have. [Post edited 17 Sep 18:55]

Heavy rain soaked quagmire pitches, soaking wet laced leather footballs, heavy leather boots, big burly defenders that didn't care if they kicked the ball or the opposition(some preferred the latter). Yes!! todays footballers have it hard.

How dear ole Rod's sufferers from playing every now and then throught a 365 day year! With approx 300 days left, that are free from any competative football.. And his wages excluding signing on fee, bonuses, sponsorship deals. He needs a kick up the arris from a 20 stone Polynesian prop forward, and a running kick at that! Rodri Salary Profile Rodri (Defensive Midfield) has 3 years and £34,320,000 gross salary remaining on his contract with Manchester City (Premier League), expiring on Jun 30, 2027. Rodri, who is 28 years old, will earn a gross base salary of £11,440,000 for the 2024-2025 Season, or £220,000 per week, not including bonuses.

Rodri you poor little spoilt boy on 22:00 - Sep 17 with 1986 views | builthjack | Players actually played more years ago. Just looked at some teams from the 70’s appearances. Bloody hell, some players, Leeds for example, played 55 - 63 club games, 42 league, league cup, fa cup, replays too, European games. Then International games on top. Todays players have it easy.

It must be stressful having to work out how to spend that money or how to invest it . Tthe more one has,the more can be lost. Go on strike if it’s too tough and get a real job .

Plus they play on heated bowling green pitches - not a sign of mud and a frozen pitch in sight !! I think Robbie still holds the record for being the youngest player to reach - 100, 200 and 300 league appearances.

It would not be surprised if that comes into play as an excuse also, because it certainly ain't condtions like achilles tendonitis or shin splints caused from too much running! It'll be the cold weather, or maybe the heat next? It makes me wonder if these sports psychologists are value for money? Because? The old way of doing things, was to be told (by being shouted at!) that when tired aching limbs and exhaustion were screaming out "Stop!...Stop!...Stop!" it was then the minds job to take over, because the mind is the general and the body the subordinate".

Bang on! And many of whom I guess live in a hard graft physically demanding world. And onto many who do less physical jobs, but are under intolerable stress and suffering from mental exhaustion from working in the NHS, or some understaffed office somewhere when doing the job of three people etc. And if this guy is stressed about running about too much, he can then run even more to burn off the cortisol hormone that his stress releases.
