What is it about Matt Grimes that gets so many negative comments. I hold my hand up, I'm one of the supporters who is seemingly frustrated by him, but struggling to really pinpoint why.

This is a player who should be edging on club legends status and have a statue outside the stadium. He's been with us nearly 10 years (in January) and is going into this fith year as captain.

He's fit as a fiddle and clearly takes care of his body through being a professional athlete.

Every time I hear him speak he seems like a very mature and well respected guy representing the club professionally and with maturity.

Yet Despite all this I still have this yearning to see him moved out of the team. I don't know if that's because :-

A) he's a victim of his own versatility and is told play numerous roles by numerous managers

B) he's a victim of the 'Swansea Style' and isn't suitable to play the way we have wanted to play over the last 3-4 years in particular.

C) He's just not that good? (We did sign him from League 2 after all)

It's just an enigma I can't quite get my head around. I want to love him... But can't (but I do massively respect him).

Me first ?
Ok
He’s slow and left for dead after beaten beaten by an opponent
His first instinct is to pass backwards .
Or sideways
We have been chasing games yet he still does it
We have a free kick. He takes it ,and strokes it sideways . Often this results in opposition belting down field to score a goal.
He doesn’t lead ,he doesn’t inspire ,he doesn’t dispute the coach’s tactics ,no matter what .
He has a good shot but does everything but shoot when in a good spot to do so.

I read on his stats . Well ,we have brought players to our club based on stats and many have been found wanting . Stats mislead .

For some reason, everything goes through him. Always. He is not onky never benched but never rested .We can play without him. If we can’t,then we really are in trouble ,deep trouble . And we might be

He missed three very decent passes forwards on Sunday that were nailed on in on goal. Yes, he’s a great player but too negative to see positivity in play. That’s my gripe and 90% would agree with me.

BTW, legends ? Not in football mate.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

A statue in the defensive part of the pitch passing backwards wouldn't see much difference in what he offers us during a game.

I can probably think of 50 players more worthy of a statue.

The biggest reason we are so boring to watch.

Why are left footed players called "one footed" ??

Yet, right footed players called "right footed" ??

😇😂

With the greatest respect bruv, in no way a great player ,not for us ,not for anyone else.
One of the most talented but misused however .
It’s bluddy criminal what he does
We need a coach
A real coach

His biggest problem is people expect him to be Leon Britton.

Everyone wants him dropped, but no one can name a midfield trio, available to us since relegation that would exclude him and improve the side.

He’s certainly not without his faults. He’s very one footed, slow and would rather a lateral pass than risk a defence splitting through ball. All the more frustrating as he’s the only one really capable of those.

He needs options, which is why he looks so much better alongside Allen.

There will come a time when we have better midfielders. Franco looks the real deal on the limited amount I’ve seen of him. Abdulai could well get there. Allen when he’s available does the same sort of job but better.

Pen
He actually stops play and then walks
I cannot imagine any real co@ch pitting up with that .
Granted he has no pace at all but it’s not really worthy of “ great”

The one player we should have moved on. The fact nobody has seriously wanted to buy him says it all.
He is surely easy to nullify

And yes,his one rootedness is embarrassing . Only the real greats can get away with that .

You could apply that logic to Leon Britton. Only Sheffield United wanted him.

Not comparable as players of course, but a player staying at a club doesn’t automatically make him useless.

The fact that he is capable of so much more than he consistently shows us.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

He gives a lot of ball away, often in crucial areas

The reason I am so often and so loudly critical of Grimes is because he is capable of more. If he was playing at the very limit of his ability I could accept that a lot more easily.

He should be the midfielder that a lot of people spend a lot of time insisting that he is. He's got it in the locker. Yet for the overwhelming majority of his Swans career he's been bang average at best, and at times, like he was on Sunday, an active hindrance to his own side.

When your key playmaker is consistently not playing very obvious attacking passes when the opportunity arises, there is little point in him being on the pitch no matter if 95% of his other passes are completed. Kevin de Bruyne's recent comments on the subject are spot on and something MG should be sat down and forced to read, Clockwork Orange style if necessary.

Great post and its why I? keep harping on about our Centre Midfield needs work, we can't rely on Joey, he's played an enormous amount of games from a young age and he's understandably suffering with countless injuries these days.

Centre Midfield should have been the main focus of attention even before the window opened, the fact we're still relying on Fulton tells us that, Fults as been a great pro for us, but its been clear for over the last 18 months or more that we needed an upgrade.

Grimes is Grimes can't see him ever changing, looks better against some teams than he does others, teams that press and pressure us and he reverts to his negative game.

You perfectly encapsulate all that's wrong with him.
Potentially he is an excellent player.

It’s all down to a failure of people to accept there are other people different to them. It’s why these riots started. Grimes should be ashamed of himself.

I feel he has suffered due to the pairings he's consistently been with. Put him with a decent forward thinking partner and leave him do what he does brilliantly and we'd prob all be lauding him. The fact that he's also our deadball specialist also does him no favours at all.

Agreed to a point, cause I still think he'll pick the safety first option, which could drag the other CM back with him.

My beef is is simply that he's not an out and out defensive.midfielder (although he does tend to play like one).

Nor is he an attacking midfielder told to speed the game up and look for opportunities to play the wingers/strikers in behind defenders.

He's a central midfielder who is predominantly defensively minded and slow. He could battle it out with Allen to be the holding defensive midfielder who's job is to to support the back 4, break up counter attacks and look to play the ball forward or laterally.ro create some space. That is what Allen is brilliant at and think is the role Grimes should take up full time.

Franco then becomes the box to box midfielder we all want who is prepared to put a foot in but also looks to get the ball moving quickly at pace and supports the attack.

For me, as an out and out CM Grimes is done. He still has value if played in the right position and with the right instructions/tempo. But as other posters have alluded to on here, he can't get squeezed out of the team because we don't have 3 better options at present, a position which still needs strengthening IMO.

As club captain though can't see him dropping down the pecking order anytime soon. LW clearly values him and isn't likely to drop him from the starting XI when he's been given the armband.

The best we can hope is an attractive offer comes in this week that is too good to turn down which will force the hand. But that looks.even less likely.

He is
That our erstwhile coaches see and saw him as pre - eminent is the reason why we are struggling to progress
I honestly believe other coaches praise is pyss taking as they are simply setting him up and our fans .
Nobody has truly wanted to buy him.
That says it all.
I read it’s because he loves the city.
Bren said that too yet offskied when it suited asap.
Grimes is a very lucky boy indeed

It is our club that matters not him.

I pray we have the guts to flog him

He doesn’t want to leave, he’s put it out there and every agent of interest knows. Every agent I’ve spoken to this summer knows it. He’s going nowhere. And won’t go anywhere this week either.

Even if a huge offer came in he wouldn’t accept any terms from a championship club.

He’s a multi millionaire already, family first and that’s in Swansea. His wife is due twins in around three weeks. He just wouldn’t do it.

Keith me ol mucker.
How many already Uber rich footballers have left to pursue even more money somewhere else
Ronaldo ,a classic example .
I truly hope Grimes isn’t looking to secure even more to his pension pot .
Does he want us to find his kids nursery fees ?

I’m surprised many are now seeing Grimes as I do and always have.
It shows how one can be right even in a minority of one.
It’s hard to be humble sometimes

They have removed him from certain duties, corner taker, free kick specialist, last line of defence at our attacking corners. Just haven't decided that it may be better to have him have to fight for his place in the team.
For most it has been a case of who we play alongside him, many have been tried.
