another Oxford St closure on 11:23 - Jul 11 with 808 views | gadgetuk | Swansea has suffered from incompetent administrations for decades, for a long time it was known as a city of artist impressions as successive regeneration schemes failed to materialise. The current administration deserves some credit for actually delivering. We have the new arena, the kingsway now looks quite pleasant, Castle square is about to be renovated, the palace theatre being done up and the forthcoming development of the Albert Hall. The only way for a town/city centre to survive is to have more people living and working there, and to that end the new office developments and student accommodation will help. I think High Street is starting to look better, and I would expect that to continue when the new student blocks open and small businesses opening up to serve them. What Swansea (and in particular high street) needs is much more visible policing and to target anti social behaviour.

another Oxford St closure on 11:13 - Jul 11 by gadgetuk | It is not a problem unique to Swansea. Most of the big chain stores have gone, even John Lewis have closed stores. The Pandemic and the move to online shopping has killed town centres - even out of town shopping has been impacted. Walk around Kingston on Thames, Sutton, Croydon and you will see exactly the same thing happening. |
It always amazes me that some think that by building large ( and not so large ) out of town shopping complexes it won't affect City/ town centres , its the same shoppers with the same amount of money to spend , it was always going have an affect . that an online shopping has had a big impact. Llanelli & Carmarthen town centres recently have been decimated and now the big stores are moving or closing there .

I haven't been to Kingston for ages but I can well imagine that. Croydon seems to have a lot of work going on

Croydon is fast becoming a no go area after dark. Lot's of gangs of youths congregating in the town centre trying to act as intimidating as possible. There was talk of westfield developing a new shopping centre there which was shelved but now may be back on the drawing board.

Wife's sister lived in Thornton Heath. As bad as is imaginable these days. Horrendous in every way. She moved to Newton Abbot ;rather different .

Nice balanced post, the current lot have done well in comparison to their predecessors, granted, the bar wasn't set very high.
