ONly a couple of weeks since his last fine mess

That being said missing 2 penalties can only be levelled at those involved.

Jeff Stelling telling it like how it is.

As Mason discussed the issue with Brighton's players, Stelling raged: "He's talking to them like a schoolmaster, for goodness sake.

"This is a shambles Lee Mason. What have you done?"

As it became apparent the goal had been ruled out Stelling got even angrier, yelling: "They've given no goal! VAR has given no goal!

"And now he's going to go and look at the screen. This is a total, utter, shameful, disgraceful piece of nonsense!

After further discussion from the pundits, Stelling added witheringly: "This is the dream team of Lee Mason and Simon Hooper, who is on VAR at the moment. You could not make this up.

"Seriously, if he knows he hasn't blown, how can he then award the goal after someone's then told him that he did whistle? Doesn't he know whether he whistled or not?

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Not to worry, he'll be punished with a month or two of Championship games to ruin.

Because he suddenly realised that his decision that the kick could be taken early had been a bad one. He saw the goalkeeper standing by the post, looking to organise the defence, leaving a huge gap for the player taking the free kick and he felt that it gave an unfair advantage.

And at that point the goal should have been ruled out and the kick retaken, but to give the goal then disallow it was just farcical.

I'm not aware of anything in the 'Laws of the game' that says a free kick shouldn't be taken until the keeper has finished organising his defence. IMHO, the keeper should be aware that the kick can be taken at any time.

It's not rugby, is it? Lol

it is not like a manure player being offside, outside the box and is tackled and the ref gives a penalty and sends off the defender!! who would do that?

Surely the team defending a free kick have gained an unfair advantage by fouling the attacking team. Always taught to play to whistle why should a keeper be rewarded for not sticking to this instruction

I am the last to support VAR but Simon Hooper had no option but to disallow the goal as the on field referee blew before the ball crossed the line.

On another point SKY experts decided that Mason blew after the Wellbeck penalty because he was deemed offside. Stupid of me to think it was because he touched the ball twice

Mason was remarkably quick in blowing for the second touch. Wellbeck looked quite shocked, had either forgotten or didn't know the rule.

It happened to me in my latter Sunday league days.I was setting the wall and the opposition player took a quick free kick and scored.I had the usual moan at the ref but he said that they asked to take a quick free kick and he said yes.I don’t remember whether he blew his whistle or not,but I think it was only 1 of the 7 goals I let in that morning.
But Mason cocked up yesterday, for a change.

You can't stop the game because you have made a mistake!

It is one of my pet hates that referees stop teams taking a quick free kick. It is not the job of an official to allow the defence to organise. It is their job to allow the team that have the free kick to take maximum advantage of the situation.

Most of the times they insist on marking out ten yards (or the metre equivalent) is because they personally want a rest!

In this instance, Mason took it upon himself to ignore the laws of the game & whistle when no offence has taken place.

He should be facing a charge of bringing the game & match officials into disrepute!

At least one of those penalties was a make up call to cover for his fcuk up .He is probably thinking what do I have to do for those clowns to equalize .
I suspect he will be spending a few weeks at home

Sky Sports are reporting that he was replaced as 4th official for today's Sheffield Utd-Liverpool match. The official line is that he picked up an injury yesterday.

That’s probably the best place for him.How can a 4th make a mistake like a ref can?

I don't mind either way, as long as they're consistent. Tbh they do give time for the other team to get the wall in place. If that's the convention, they can't suddenly decide to allow them to do a quick free kick in a position where they'd normally expect to have a whistle. Either/or but not a combination of both.

The whole charade epitomized how utterly stupid the game has become.

In the 70's, quick free kicks were an art (R's were brilliant at it) and teams had to be on their toes. Now the ref stops the game walks out 10yrds and all of this takes ages.

Referee's and officials have become front and centre of the game - why? Rules have changed but we cannot interview a ref after a game and ask them why they have made "nutcase" decisions.

VAR is a fecking mess and killing the game and shithousery is rife in the game with teams and individual players allowed to kill a game for gain.

I struggle to watch any PL game because it is so sanitized. It's just not "proper" football anymore.
