Final play-off spot 17:23 - Feb 19 with 18032 views | Northernr | As I've been researching it for the preview may as well put the full lot on here. Here are the points accumulated and the games lost by the team finishing sixth in this league since 92/93. -Highest it's been is 80, lowest is 68, average is 73.6. - Most number of defeats is 16, least is 10. We've already lost 10. - Only five times has the team from sixth won promotion, which rather ruins the idea that the team that crashes in with a late run of form often fairs best. - QPR are currently tracking at 59 points for the season - To get to the 74 point mark we'd need 38 points from our remaining 18 games, more than 2 a game. 19/20 - Swansea 70, 12 18/19 - Derby 74, 12 17/18 - Derby 75, 11 16/17 - Fulham 80, 10 15/16 - Sheff Wed 74, 10 14/15 - Ipswich 78, 12 13/14 - Brighton 72, 12 12/13 - Leicester 68, 16 11/12 - Cardiff 75, 9 10/11 - Forest 75, 11 09/10 - Blackpool 70, 14, Promoted 08/09 - Preston 74, 14 07/08 - Watford 70, 12 06/07 - Southampton 75, 13 05/06 - Palace 75, 12 04/05 - West Ham 73, 15 Promoted 03/04 - Palace 73, 15, Promoted 02/03 - Forest 74, 12 01/02 - Norwich 75, 15 00/01 - West Brom 74, 14 99/00 - Bolton 76, 12 98/99 - Bolton 76, 10 97/98 - Sheff Utd, 74, 10 96/97 - Palace, 71, 13, Promoted 95/96 -Leicester, 71, 13, Promoted 94/95 - Barnsley 72, 14 (play offs only to fifth that year, Barnsley finished 6th) 93/94 - Derby 71, 15 92/93 - Leicester, 76, 14

Final play-off spot on 22:02 - Feb 20 by Dorse | Not sure about the play-offs but compare the early season Plan A with the post-Christmas Plan B / C / 2.0 / whatever: it's like two different teams. Right now, I'm just loving life. But then, I am quite drunk. |
Sorry, but isn't Warb's Plan B just doing Plan A better? Are you sure that is not what is happening now? (Drunk too, btw).

Do I detect a touch of negativity in your post? Also highly presumptuous about who may or may not be at the club next season?

Final play-off spot on 19:14 - Feb 20 by ManinBlack | Of course I don't disagree with anything you say and what is the point of the game if we have no ambition to make the play offs? I said I was a realist and I don't believe we are ready both on and off the pitch for Premier league football. If we go up too soon before getting our house in order then we may get carried away and start making the same mistakes again and come back down after one miserable season. Personally I will be happy to finish between 7th and 12th considering how the first half of the season went. I am also acutely aware in recent seasons that when we reach 50 points we switch off with 8 games to go and stumble across the finish line. With the condensed season there could be a number of tired teams in the run in. |
With Amit, Hoos and evil Les more or less running things and Warbs in the hot seat, we've never been in a better position off the pitch to do things right if we were ever to go up in the next few seasons.

I guess you could say from this that we're actually surprisingly good 'promotion-converters' aren't we (one of the best?). In other words, when the 'carrot has dangled' in front of us we've always gone and grabbed it. 96-97 probably the only faint exception to this IIRC. Not for us yer various Ipswich, Bolton, Brum, Watford, Derby, Brentford-style multiple near-misses and heart-aches over these years. In cricket terms, when 'we flash, we flash hard- when we hit, it stays hit....etc'....

In fact it appears that when we finish in the top ten and don't go up we immediately have a massive panic and address the balance the next year!

Our commitment to getting 50-60 points per season is extraordinary. Also never realised that 2 more wins and 2 draws in the Redknapp season would've equaled the points total for the Warnock one. They seemed (and felt) so vastly different

Final play-off spot on 11:43 - Feb 22 with 1500 views | kernowhoop | We have to have a target of sixth place, realistic or not. The alternative is no meaningful target and being brought down gradually by lethargy. That leads to games that 'don't matter', a losing run and getting perilously close to the bottom three. Haven't we seen this before when we have almost reached the points target for 'safety'? Let's keep the foot on the gas.
Final play-off spot on 12:27 - Feb 22 with 1425 views | Geoff78 | Although it's wonderful to see the Rs grabbing 3 points with unaccustomed regularity there is an element of lady luck evening things out. On that bad run we weren't as bad as results suggested - I know in general results don't lie - but there were green shoots, esp in our defence - Dieng and Dickie are a huge upgrade. The recent run isn't probably as good as it seems despite the obvious contributions of Charlie and Johansen, but the opposition are making mistakes and a few things have gone our way. An interesting test will be fatigue and injuries. Warbs seems to be getting players off quickly when they tire and talks a lot about needing to manage their fitness and tiredness. If he gets this right, and he does seem to be using the bench well, things may continue to go well. Perhaps the bad luck with the Amos and Carroll injuries means we'll be spared any more long term injuries for the rest of the season? But that's the sort of fate-tempting statement I may regret. Anyway playoffs here we come... maybe!

Final play-off spot on 18:37 - Feb 19 by Hunterhoop | Not at the 56-58 point level, Clive, but broadly that does make sense. An even league will see a higher safety total and a lower play off total requirement. They go hand in hand to a degree. Case in point: the year Peterborough went down on 54 points was the year Leicester made the play offs on 68. |
great use of stats there Hunter; I like your style..... just to clarify, does that mean we are going down or up?

Final play-off spot on 14:18 - Feb 22 with 1298 views | ManinBlack | I believe fitness is the key because if we lost Austin for 6 games through injury then scoring goals becomes more difficult so it is difficult to say whether we can keep this momentum going as nobody knows what will happen with fitness. I still believe that we are not as good as Fulham or West Brom last season and look where they are now. If that makes me arrogant for daring to suggest we are not ready for promotion so be it. We may get much needed money but I don't want us to be battered and come down like the two recent experiences. That is how I feel as I want us to grow each year to have a team that can compete at the higher level. I do agree that we need something to strive for as I don't want to see us get to 50-53 points and down tools and go through the motions in the last 8 fixtures which has happened a fair bit in the past preventing us at least reaching 70 points.
Final play-off spot on 15:07 - Feb 22 with 1238 views | francisbowles | We are still in the same position that no team has reached the play offs with 39 points from 29 games in the last sixteen seasons (can't find the data for previous seasons). The nearest were 42 points, Cardiff 5th last season and Villa 5th and play off winners the season before. It's not exactly a realistic chance of the play offs but it's a shout. All we can do is try and keep gathering as many point as possible and see where it takes us. The encouraging things are that there are still a lot of games to play, the points gap could be small if did well in the games in hand and this is a season unlike any other.
