Penalties 17:00 - Nov 8 with 7561 views | Nov77 | It’s all the game is nowadays. Leicester have been awarded 8 so far this season, we’ve conceded 5 and scored 3. Just get yourself in the box, throw yourself on the floor, get yourself an easy goal. Would love to know what the ratio of penalties awarded today is compared to years ago.

Penalties on 17:21 - Nov 8 with 5910 views | QPRSteve | In a way I'm glad we are in the championship as VAR is ruining the premiership. Ridiculous handball and offside decisions plus the length of time it takes the officials to make up their minds. Every week there is controversy over a least one decision. FIFA and the FA need to be run by ex-players who actually know what goes on in a game.

Dickie taken out the GK it looked to me. If you look at angle from behind the goal, ref doesn't blow until that final challenge. [Post edited 8 Nov 2020 17:34]

There was contact on Dickie but fair to say I'd be unhappy if that was given against us. Soft, but seen them given.

No I don't know. The commentators were talking about handball before the replay was shown. Didn't look like a handball. Might have been for a foul on Dickie but didn't look like much to me.

Who was it at the back post, Barbet? Looked like he got a big shove which stopped him scoring in an open goal. But one of those that should be a penalty but rarely actually given

Not having a dig, really!, but that was Nick London and in his defence , as he said himself, he is 80 yards away, so not really in a position to judge! I have mellowed a little in regard to most, not all, of his gaffes, learning that, away from home, he and Andy don't have access to a monitor - so can't be easy with just the live, one view, in real time, to call everything correctly. Previous match thinking it was Chair who was fouled when it was Dykes was pretty poor though - even Andy was a bit taken aback by that one!

No I wasn't criticising the commentators. I just meant that they were talking about a possible handball until the replay was shown and then realised it wasn't. Sorry my post didn't make that clear. [Post edited 9 Nov 2020 9:53]

Penalties on 12:38 - Nov 9 with 5419 views | Nov77 | Just read that the average number of penalties awarded per season in the Premier league is 88. At current trends, this season we’re on course for over 200 being awarded.

I meant not having a dig at Nick London, not you! It wasn't at all clear on 1st real time viewing why we got the pen, but if you look at replay, ref didn't actually blow until that last challenge on Dickie.

I was listening to the match on the radio and they said point blank Salah just cheated his way to that penalty and it should have been a yellow card for diving .I know the ref is running behind the play and it always looks like the defender is guilty but what exactly is VAR and its 1000 different angles for if not to get it right . I assumed Mo Salah played the game right but like the others he appears to just play the game
Penalties on 15:09 - Nov 9 with 5286 views | queensparker | Just before Blackburn got their second Kakay gave away an obvious penalty as well that wasn’t given - we’d have heard more about that if Armstrong hadn’t scored about 30 seconds later

What's the referees' views on VAR Pinner? I must admit I thought it was to resolve clear errors, like Ashley Young's offside and dive and against us for which Shaun Derry got sent off. But instead it's stopping goals where someone's toe is offside or allowed penalties where someone's leg brushed someone else's and they went down. It really should have been set up so that it overruled clear and obvious errors that the referee or linesman missed, not something that they couldn't have seen in real time, and that the VAR team needs minutes to check on.

Not a fan, as I've posted many times before. Said so before it was introduced. I get the 'clear and obvious' part but problem is when you have a review system, people are going to want it used for everything. Just watched first part of UEFA programme about referees who were miked up during CL matches, now it was a bit of a 'promotional video' whereby every decision shown was correct and VAR worked seamlessly and of course editing created the impression that the VAR decisions were made in sceonds, when of course we all know they are not! However one small incident DID make it past the editor and was quite damning I thought. CL Game - Tight offside, VAR checks - takes sometime evidently but then tells referee that goal should be disallowed and offside given, However the VAR then tells the referee that he is checking " the rest". Now this clearly irritates the referee who replies '"Quickly, quickly, we must restart" Now the point is what on earth is VAR doing checking an unspecified "rest" - if he had seen something, as we heard on other conversations, he would have said '"Checking possible handball by x" So here after a lengthy delay you have VAR checking for 'something' that he hasn't seen in real time, nor has the ref nor has any player (no appeals) - THAT is where the use of VAR is wrong. On the programme UEFA Head of Refereeing said himself it was to correct "clear and obvious errors' and yet here we saw a clear example of it NOT being used for that all! Sorry to the 99% of you who found that a complete waste of space

Can’t read it as it says you have to be registered to view it. The broader point is referees are incentivised to give the penalty even when they think a player might have dived. They can be wrong two ways, they can give a penalty that they shouldn’t have, or they can not give a penalty when they should. In the first case, they can say ‘not my fault’, the player dived and therefore conned me, ‘blame him’. In the second case, they can’t shift the blame anywhere else, they have to take responsibility for getting it wrong.

Far from it very interesting. Surely in this debate the referees have a very strong voice, the game dose not exist without them and FIFA or whoever cannot sack them all. Is it not possible for all like minded referees to get together to fight this. Unless of course most are happy with the way VAR is being used.

Sorry mate, that's me being computer illiterate! The telling stats are that for every season since PL started between 5 - 9% of all goals have been penalties, and of those seasons only 3 or 4 got up to 8% and only 1 was 9%. This season so far 14% of goals have been pens- now obviously we need to see a full season's stats to see if that % stays up there, but quite a staggering difference, which for me is down to two things - the revised handball law interpretation and VAR.

Plenty of grassroots referees against VAR from my conversations and those on RefChat - for obvious reasons we're never going to know what the top referees really think of it!
