I'm not a ST holder so doesnt really apply to me,but skimming through the thread im struggling to think of anything/anywhere else you'd purchase something yet not receive approx a third of what you've been promised and paid for months previously and be expected to think ahh fook it you're right keep it.

I can see both sides to this,but while some are pointing out the club may well be struggling financially etc id guess a fair few fans are struggling a damn site more and a refund should be made as easy as possible to request if desired.

If the increase is so prohibitive that I could not afford a new ST in any case then I,d rather have the 6/7 free tickets myself, at least I,d get to see some games that way

First a ST holder has to opt out, rather than opt in. The presumption is that the ST holder would do it and not if they were asked to had the standard approach be the standard refund.

For the early bird fan we are talking about a refund of between £40 (Sandy Lane) and £65 (Main Stand) per season ticket. Broadly a full refund would cost the club £125,000 less the VAT on those tickets VAT so about £100,000.

Second, the scheme is crediting those 15,000 tickets over a maximum 44 home games (given the first few games of next season will be behind closed doors); 340 tickets a game.

I can't see how 340 people who will get those tickets will not just be reducing those who would have paid in - either as season ticket holders or floating fans.

The Board clearly don't want or possibly have the £100.000 to pay out if everyone demands a refund - fair enough.

The rewarding of key workers is a noble intention - fair enough.

But give the consumer the choice; effectively each ST is making a £40 donation to this "Community Fund" unless they write in and say they don't want to.

It would have been ever so more powerful if it had been done the other way around.

A really good example of why that has to happen.

There is no reason whatsoever to have a cutoff point for opting out before October which is the earliest any fans can return to grounds.

44 home games?


I'm assuming 21 home games open to fans for 2020/21 and 23 in 2021/22 that are open to fans with no capacity issues.

If the number is less then the more tickets of the 15,000 have to be given away over a few number of games.

Season starts on September 12th; no fans until October.

I'm working on the basis during that time there will be games on 12th, 19th, 26th and a Tuesday night in there; two at home and two away.

Football's authorities have to have the 2020/21 season end in May 2021 so that the football calendar returns to "normal" and will take all reasonable steps to do so.

2021/22 will be aiming to kick off in August 2021.

Just what is it that's stopping those in charge at our club from adopting a similar tone, whilst getting it right?

Instead, we get homilies on patience, with barely a second thought to how condescending it comes across. Result? Some who would've been happy to forego their refund are now feeling minded to receive it

For me the disappointing thing is the underhandedness of it; the club have decided to generate good PR for itself ("Dale to donate 15,000 Tickets to Key Workers") using ST holders cash - Dale aren't donating the tickets, the fans are!

I didn't want my ST money back, but I didn't want to invite key workers either, the majority of which have no interest in the Dale - we are the backbone of this club, and any benefits or donations should go to the people who have stuck with this club through thick and thin.

I am a key worker and have been at work throughout; I also paid to watch 23 games this season of which I missed 7. Now to hear somehow that I should donate those tickets to other key workers seems daft; why should I not get to keep them myself, seeing as these tickets are apparently going spare now?

To hear that the club were all for giving refunds or money in the club shop but were then persuaded not to by the Trust is a bit off as well.

I didn't want the money back - I wanted to keep my money within the club. A small gesture, maybe a discount on club shop gear or next ST, would've been enough.

Overall, I find the whole communication a bit seedy and corporate. I also think the scheme itself is rubbish, and tries to guilt trip people who find this a bad idea. I don't pay my season ticket money every year out of the goodness of my heart, I do it to help my club, and to find that the club have commandeered that money for charitable rubbish so that they look good in the local press is bobbins.

Whatever people’s views on the positives and negatives of this idea, it’s clear that the situation needs addressing after listening to the feedback.

A bit more clarity with the options available being set out so fans can make their own choice based on their circumstances/opinions. The very first thing that needs sorting is the removal of that cut-off date.

If that isn’t sorted, there will be a lot more issues when the new season tickets are released.

A cashless solution has been mentioned, but not as specific as you have pointed out, which is exactly what should happen.

Well done for going to so much effort to research and then post that. As one of the last clubs to make any announcements I presume we knew what everybody else had done.

I did spot one issue with Burton Albion - their T&Cs for a season ticket say that no refund is due of any games are not played in a season. If clubs automatically start doing that then nobody in the right mind will buy a season ticket in this climate where a second wave or risk of local lock-down could well mean there are significantly less than 20 home games to be seen next season

Clubs are going to need to be creative and flexible. Such as .,..... we would like you to make two payments - one now and one in January. If we haven't played 12 home games by January there is a pro rate change in your January payment. Or selling a 12 game flexi ticket at a higher price per game than a ST but a lower price than a match day ticket so that nervous fans can wait until they feel safe to return. Either way the club gets some cash up front

Just caught up on this thread and it beggars belief. What should have been a PR tap in into an empty net has turned into a 2 point conversion to Hornets.

When I posted the poll on refunds, it was to gauge the overall mood of the supporter base who post/visit here so the club would have a rough idea how much dosh it may have to return at some point in the future in the event of a season abandonment. 83% (80 out of 96) said they wouldn't request a refund and 6.3% (6 out of 96) said they would with 10 others hoping for some kind of gesture in return or had "another" reason.

So all the club needed to do was say option (a) = refund of £XX depending where you sit/stand, option (b) = donation of refund amount to club to help it during these difficult times. If it wanted to give away to a worthy cause (i.e. match) the number of tickets not being refunded it could simply say that for everyone not wanting a refund, those 6 (or 7) tickets would go into a draw for the worthy cause (at minimal cost to the club as the tickets would probably go to folk who wouldn't attend anyway) and the visitors might even spend a few bob at the ground whilst there to boot. Anyone wanting to donate some or all of their refund to the club could have done that by spending to benefit the club according to what they felt was fair. It's just plain common sense isn't it?

Instead, there was that announcement. Opaque refund policy, "generosity of the club" and the dubious (is it even legal?) deadline to claim a refund the day before ST prices are announced. I very much doubt the "refund" numbers will be anything like as low as they would and should have been now (as this thread suggests) and the loss of goodwill is shameful. It should have been an object lesson in presenting a win-win. It turned out to be an abject one. Are our board really as out of touch with the public as politicians now?

I don't want a refund for missed games on my season ticket. I don't really care how you dress it up, or what your reasoning is, the obvious truth is the club will be damaged financially if fans ask for season ticket refunds. It's not something I can comprehend doing.

I don't want a refund for missed games on my season ticket. I don't really care how you dress it up, or what your reasoning is, the obvious truth is the club will be damaged financially if fans ask for season ticket refunds. It's not something I can comprehend doing.


If you read back through the thread you will see questions have been asked of the Trust, as well as praise afforded to the club for their refund plans.

I think questions maybe need to be asked of the Trust as well as the Club on this one.

It was a Trust proposal that was accepted by the board. Poor execution either way, which has offended those who need little excuse to be offended.

The club was damaged financially by the EFL kicking Bury out of the League after the fixtures had been released. The Club has been damaged financially by repeatedly resurfacing the pitch when it was obvious a major rebuild was required, The Club was damaged financially when Hill and Beech were fired. It was damaged financially by signing "sick note" McLaughlin and by paying a centre forward who couldn't hit a barn door a reputed £2k a week.
People are legally and morally entitled to a refund. That's it. End of. What they do with their refund is entirely up to them. If you want to tell the club you don't want a refund fine, last year I didn't claim the £25 voucher against my ST from the previous season, it was my decision and since I buy 2 season tickets it cost me £50 but it was MY decision.

The problem now is that 2500 people have to claim a refund or lose the option to decide what happens to THEIR money.
The club needs to make a series of offers to entice them to spend at or give the money to the club. That is the moral thing to do. So would I accept shares in the club instead? Yes I would. Would I put the money back into the club via an increased ST price? Yes I would.
Would I put some money into a hardship fund for fans who need some help, Yes I would.
Do I want the club to make those decisions for me? NO I do not.

Excellent clear, timely & fulsome apology for poor communication rather than poor planning. Hope my unused tickets get donated to key workers asap. My suggestion is the Molyneux/Pilling Streets refuse collectors who've kept working and smiling throughout.
