England v Croatia 21:56 - Jul 7 with 12624 viewsbosh67

I have no idea why but feel a bit relieved we are playing Croatia rather than Russia given the intensity of Russia's fantastic support and what it would have elevated to against us if they had won.

I feel that it will be a more even playing field on Wednesday. We won't be playing 80,000+ supporters in the ground as well.

Croatia are a hugely talented team but like today it is a game that on paper could go either way, whereas I felt it was written in the stars for the Russians to do the impossible if they won tonight.

Never knowingly right.

Hard luck, lads.

An excellent campaign.

It's the curse of ITV striking again. We broke it once but doing it a second time was too much to ask. Fücking shit channel, fücking shit commentators.

Taxidermist for Roy Keane.

So hard to tell if he’s still alive.

Yes to all of that.

In '90 I really thought we'd go on to win the next Euros with Gazza hitting his peak. But in hindsight Robson (fine man and excellent club manager) stumbled into his best team in both his WCs and then Taylor (also very decent bloke) absolutely screwed up England. And in 96 the FA idiots stabbed El Tel in the back.

Southgate will surely have the next Euros and WC to hone this team and maybe find that midfield playmaker. And at least this is a team we can be proud of. It's a hell of a turnaround in less than two years.

Football is all about if’s and buts but I thought Kane was going to bury that chance on 30 mins and 2-0 would have made it a whole lot tougher for Croatia.

We didnt even get the corner when Kanes follow up came off the goalie.

England should’ve been 3-0 up at half time but for bad misses by Kane and Lingard. Second half Croatia changed tactics and I thought Southgate was slow to adapt.....we had no midfield at all with Alli and Lyngard largely anonymous. Then poor defensive lapses by Walker for their equaliser and Stones for their winner. Gutted as it could’ve been so very different. Anyway enough of this WC b.ollox and back to real football. Another game where England couldn't score in open play.

Going out at this stage is nothing to be ashamed of as this team has done so much better than expected.

Thought we got beat by a team with more footballing nouse and experience, we've had a bloody good campaign and we can only look forward now.
The players will learn from this or at least they should.

Totally agree. On the night, after an excellent first half but missed chances we were taught a bit of a lesson by a more experienced team who managed to take the width out of us.

But, if we can bring on a young playmaker over the next few years this is the start of something for us and we have to give Southgate the space and time to do that, because I think we will be a force in 2020 if we keep level headed and let Southgate do his job and bring other young players through. And build the experience in the squad.

Never knowingly right.

Congratulations England for making it to the semi finals.
An achievement in itself and doing it without diving and rolling around on the deck trying to get another player sent off. Some people had written you off before you got on the plane.

Strong and stable my arse.

We needed to be a bit smarter or cynical if you like when Croatia were dominating the first twenty minutes of the second half and you could see an equaliser was coming. Needed a few early fouls and if needs be a few yellow cards to disrupt their rhythm to stop their momentum. Perhaps that'll come with more experience.

We just couldnt keep our foot in the game and boss it and gave Croatia's best players too much time on the ball. We looked more tired in the end. Despite Sterlings finish product he works harder at top then Rashford. Rashford ambled through thr game when he came on, where Sterling gives the defence more problems.
Another England disappointment but the lads should be proud of themselves. A massive improvment in attitude and application from recent years.
I hope Southgate stays and builds from this. First time in years where i was actually proud of this team.

A fair point as the ref let Croatia get away with several yellow card offences while we were on top.

Ref was poor in this regard, worse he booked Walker for an offence he later failed to book a Coatian player for which is unforgiveable.
IN many ways he was very poor, likewise his assistants. Early 2nd half England should have had a corner and you could see the Lino stairing up into Space (literally) WTF.
They were poor, but thats not overall why they lost.

Much to be proud of but equally much to learn from for all concerned but hell they got further than anyone thought.

Here's hoping more players coming through and getting PL chances, wiothout that there's nothing anyone can do.

Regards Southgate much to praise him for but his game management needs fine tuning and reacvting to things here and there was probably wanting a bit last night, incuding his substitutions.

Not means to critise but something I've felt here and there throught the campaign, again though it's something for him to look at, work on and hopefully he will.

Much to come I feel but they need to be looking for further imprvement and competition for places.

Old issues still lurk in the background...

Alli was not fit the entire tournament- he could barely run and Southgate was at fault for continuing to play him, and not taking him off last night... he's incredibly unselfish, and will play a pass instead of shooting... and by all accounts, his teammates love him. I really don't care that he celebrates goals- says nothing about his character

englands biggest weakness has been finding a proper holding player who can actually retain possession and push the team forward like a Michael carrick. perhaps loftus cheek will eventually be that person, not sure who else is in the pipeline

Despite all the pride and hope for the future that was an opportunity missed.

Kane and Lingaard should have both scored and killed the game off. I thought game changed when Sterling went off and we no longer had a threat in behind them so they pushed up and we couldn't get out of our half for long periods

If it's any consolation..
England would have been better if Sterling had stayed on at QPR;
England would have been better if Walker had stayed on at QPR;
Eberechi Eze will be available for the next World Cup if Nigeria don't grab him first.
And if the above doesn't help, remember it's only a game, what really matters is beating those Aussies at cricket...

Another great article from Jorge Valdano, this time about Modric (Valdano is also quite positive about England).

'We're not talking about a gift like Diego Maradona's, rather one that consists filling the game with common sense. He doesn't do impossible things; when he plays a pass, you see it and think: 'That's what I would have done.' We love to draw conclusions like that when we watch games but we should not believe what we say. In fact, what Modric does only Modric does.

When the ball passes by his feet, the play flows as if football was the easiest thing in the world. It's not about adding intensity or danger to the move; it's about adding sense, clarity, intent. At a World Cup at which it seems like spaces are disappearing — which is strange, considering the pitch still measures 100 x 70 — and everyone who gets the ball seems to be in a hurry, as if the entire pitch was penalty area, Modric performs the miracle of allowing the move to breathe, giving the ball the necessary speed, wherever it is on the field. Suddenly, we discover space and time do exist and that all that was needed was someone with the talent to bring them back, to make them what they always were. Someone who knows how to play football. Or better still, PLAY FOOTBALL in capital letters.'

Luka Modric: miracle worker who reminds us space and time do exist
