No idea. Not long been back in. We're meeting tomorrow night, and I'm sure it will be mentioned.

I'm sure it will.

Good luck with it all.

Pretty well summed it up Smaclad I can only add that among the lunacy of the on again off again Gala event and the cringe worthiness and petulance shown in the club statement in regards to its cancellation can you confirm, cause I'm struggling to believe it, that the Club had the neck to ask you for 1000 quid to sponsor and present your own trophy?
[Post edited 21 Mar 2018 20:15]

They did indeed ask for £1000 (plus VAT)in the email to our Chair that I posted yesterday on the 'End of Season-do - £65' thread.

The key bit is here -

"Therefore, it will be the SMAC Player of the Season Award sponsored by xxxxx.
The sponsor will then present the award on the night.
.....
You can of course sponsor the Award itself — the cost is £1,000 plus VAT and includes:
- "blah blah blah and so on.

Referencing back to the Club's statement today, I think our Chair's response might possibly have been interpreted as, maybe, perhaps, just a tiny bit negative? He certainly wasn't reaching for the cheque book!

This gala will go down as the worst idea since Ratchet McClank proposed a handbrake for a canoe.

The subsequent dummy spit has mopped up any last trace of dignity that may have been salvaged from the situation.

And you can piss off as well. It was only the other day you were bragging about putting residents out on the street when you worked in social housing. Left wing man of the people my arse.

I didn't brag, I said I had to watch out for people I'd evicted in the pub. My job was dealing with rent arrears at the time. Guess what if you dont pay your rent you eventually get evicted. Sorry to break this to you. The amount of work that gets put in to prevent that is immense, however if no one paid the company goes bust.
I never said I was man of the people, you aren't consistent during the course of an argument, you need to piss off

I doubt that a Director wrote that statement. Either marketing/press officer or Russ Green.

It appears to be a knee-jerk reaction which hasn't gone through any approval process.

Embarrassing and offensive IMHO......

Exactly - as I alluded to in my earlier post about the appalling statement on OS. I don't think there would've been much objection to a formal dinner for those who were interested had they not made a decision to kibosh the annual awards (although their reasoning for the "celebration" was highly embarrassing).

Hmmmm.

We have some mighty fine directors and the Chief Exec is well thought of by the Trust board.

Club employees are well thought of by many.

Something had gone awry with regards control of the activities of the less than fine, it would appear to me.

I wonder if there has been something along the lines of "go on then, deliver the mad cap idea of the gala dinner and ill show my arse in McDonald's if we had one..."

A McDonald's, not an arse, which some appear to think is an elbow.

My understanding is that CD has "stepped back" this season, and it sure as hell shows....

Let's hope he recognises the issues & reasserts his influence (unlikely if he's planning retirement).

It just illustrates what a great job he has done at the helm in recent years & for that we should be grateful.

Agreed and he's not on his own in the fine stewardship stakes in my opinion.

Just like a couple of management appointments in recent years meant they had to be terminated because of results, so too should other club appointments be scrutinised. And I don't mean employees.

It does raise the spectre of what might lie in store for the club, if the current malaise is allowed to continue, especially if there's a greater wedge (in more ways than one) driven between the board and the fans

I too would hope CD would be able to re-assert his benign influence, or risk seeing the legacy of the past 10/12 years wasted

Quick question.. the rhetoric which is being played out here is that an awards dinner is a shite idea when we’re likely to get relegated..

With this in mind, how come we’re still willing to have the free one then? Surely the same principle should then be applied?

Oh no thats right, cause it’s free

That was my basic argument. In no way did that mean I wanted it cancelled for others though. The rule of a noisy few has won. The arguments put forward for cancelling it were nonsense. “Sixty five quid prices out normal working class people........”

It’s people trying to paint themselves out to be pure traditionalists by slagging off anyone who wants to go as a corporate prawn butty guy. When the reality is they are tight wads. Yes the timing is terrible after the season we have had and the shite Hill and a certain director has come out with but overall it’s not a bad idea. The same people that complain about us being tinpot are the same people who want the awards do in a smelly old man pub with screaming brats knocking about.

The club has every right to issue a statement like that. They're trying to enhance the club's reputation by arranging a fantastic evening and the "working classes" throw their toys out of the pram and ruin it for people like me who were ready to attend.
Also perhaps some of us like having an evening where we can unwind without kids being there. They'd have got their family fin day with the reserves and a bouncy castle and maybe a spot of face painting with Desmond the Dragon so what's the problem?
The trust should do the right thing and help get this event back on

Quit talking shit you don't even attend matches. There's more chance of your banner being spotted at a match than you.

ranger, is there any chance you can come to the Trust desk before the Shrewsbury game on Good Friday? It looks like you need explaining to, besides the money issues as to why this event was ill thought out as an awards night, as you clearly don't get it.
I'll be there as Will other Trust board members no doubt. You may have some good valid points? But I think it's better to discuss them personally rather than on a forum. Just ask for roccy between 1 and 2.30 pm.

The cost isn't just £65 though is it?
If the function was to be blacktie (as was rumoured) then there may the cost of hiring a dinner jacket.
Eight pints priced probably at least three pounds each
Perhaps a bottle of wine with the meal itself?
Raffle tickets
Transport there and back although not in a carriage.
Much as I would have loved to go it might have cost over £150 and it's difficult explaining that to the wife.

The first salvo of discontent regarding the ill fated Gala event centered around price of tickets and its elitist aspect however, it was quickly realised the real issue went deeper it was the cancellation of the annual awards night with its shutting out of rank and file and children in particular that irked and raised the ire of many who were quick to understand this while at the same time accepting that it in itself the gala event had merit and was possibly good value. You cant seem to grasp this nor can Ranger in spite of 4 pages on this thread and 8 pages on the other that have explained in detail the folly of whoever proposed it and the club for going along with it. What you call rhetoric is in fact that almost everyone disagrees with you. You keep making ill conceived points using straw man arguments about the Trust involvement or lack of on issues that had no bearing on this matter. The fact that even the proponents of the Gala event have understand the depth of feeling against it and canned it so why cant you? your last point

"With this in mind, how come we’re still willing to have the free one then? Surely the same principle should then be applied?
Oh no thats right, cause it’s free"

is just dumb and highlights your lack of understanding.

There was a whole host of reasons for people objecting in such high numbers and so vociferously. They have been well documented on a couple of threads on this board.

The infantile nature of the club response shows just how little respect is shown to fans by whoever wrote it, and therefore by association, probably conceived the idea.

Again, an idea that included charging the owners of awards £1,200 (grand plus VAT) for the privilege of presenting their own award without sounding the owners out well in advance of the pathetic announcement of an event that would also celebrate a 50th anniversary 1 year early, a 110th birthday 1 year late, and getting to a cup replay that any other year would have been played in the White Hart Lane area of North London?

Is that the sort of supercilious, pompous, bombastic, ungrateful "professional" club that we want to become?

There have been numerous changes made by the club in the Dunphy years for the better, but I am certain that if certain traditions were to be tinkered with, such as the home kit colours, there would be similar objections by fans.
