And now for something positive
at 17:52 20 Oct 2024

Brilliant post.
My feel good factor was that I went with my lad and my best mate, who is a Pompey fan. Got pssd before the game for the first time in years and with my lad for the first time now he's 18.

Sat in the Lower School end - half price, couldn't see how happy the away fans were, a little more leg room and more space in the concourse.

My mate was happy (although sympathetic) and the beers started flowing more. Met up with my 85 year old old man who was in London watching Rugby. More beer, Weatherspoons in Clapham, food, train home, Ludwig, tea, bed.

Accepted that this lot are absolute garbage, that we are going down and that it's going to be about the day out instead of the football from now on.

It is like giving up smoking....
at 16:00 20 Oct 2024

I won't be there on Tuesday - laddo told me on Friday that he had a works do that evening, which gave me a get out. Unfortunately we have committed to Burnley and Leeds away in the next month; that might be it for the season.

No choice once you've made it. As I said on another thread, we have been utter crap since the fans ousted Richard Thompson. Or maybe it was Sir Les leaving. Maybe there is a theme there...

Just embarrassing to support this lot; sitting at home watching away fans just take the pss, but at least sitting in the Lower School end, I did not have that pain to bear. Sitting away at Blackpool last season, Derby this season and every fckn home game week after fckn week...

Mad. All of us, Utterly Mad.

Is this on Nourry?
at 08:10 20 Oct 2024

It is this.

The club has been utterly inept since the fans drove Richard Thompson out. Crap leadership, no strategy, crap appointments until Briatore lucked out on Warnock. Face it, apart from some Holloway magic from when the club was on its knees, a Warnock masterclass for one season after disaster after disaster when we had money and an excessively expensively assembled squad leading to a playoff win, we have been utterly shite.

...and on this latest pile of crap, the owners have run away, Dougie Howser MD shows his face once in a while to take soft questions, the recruitment team buys "ballers" and not footballers, the manager thinks that we can chase a game without Dembele or Chair on the pitch and best of all the players have no urgency, no commitment and a stunning lack of ability.

Fault is everywhere and especially yesterday.

We lost because Morgan Fox gave away two goals. They created very, very little apart from that. We lost because Illias Chair misses a simple one on one. We lost because the team that finished that game could not score in a brothel with £1000 in their pocket.

Why JCS did not play, I'll never know. If he can get on the bench, surely he can start?

Nardi, Frey and Dembele can have their heads up, the rest of them well off the standard. Special mention to Paal, Smyth and Fox though. Garbage the three of them. The big failing of our club is that they HAVE to play; who else do we have?

Our Pomp and Ceremony - Match thread vs PFC
at 09:33 19 Oct 2024

Been a nice break from QPR over the last two weeks; just got on with my life. Today that changes and I am apprehensive that they will stress me out. HOWEVER, my best mate is a Pompey fan and this used to be our go to game for a few seasons on the odd occasion we were in the same league. We always managed to sit together (usually in the home end) and will be doing so tomorrow in the LOWER school end (the flex ticket is HALF price there, you know...

So, as I will be in company and I will be drinking, the result will not matter so much at the time. No doubt they will make me angry though.

No "umph" in midfield; tippy tappy weak as pss players there, no height in the three behind the striker, which means I'd like to see a back for of Fox - JCS - Cook - Dunne. Inverted full backs f-off and Kenneth Paal just pss off the pitch; I'd like someone a little less of a "baller" and more of a footballer / defender, which is what Fox is.

Still think we will disappoint - start well, lose 0-2.

BUT at least I'm going to have a laugh with my lad and my mate...

Lost that in a 5 minute spell. Rank first half between two rank teams. The first goal was bad enough giving a CB a completely free header to pick his spot, but the second was nothing short of disgraceful.

From OUR kick off!

The game started with Paal slapping his diag to hoof it up the pitch into the one Derby player closing him down and that just set the tone. Jimmy Dunne's clearance at our goal was another particularly "highlight".

Ashby no better than Santos on that showing, Paal còntinues to stroll through games with no urgency and no criticism, Cook's form of captaincy appears to bawl out others constantly, Madsen sleeps his way through games and the wind appears to blow our attacking midfielders over. Anderson and Saito spent the afternoon being out muscled. Nardi kept the score down, but his kicking was poor. Frey gave his all, but isn't really all that, he just looks good because he plays in THIS team.

On the plus side (!) of course the subs gave us some hope. The defence improved with Fox there and Illy showed what a difference he will make by just coming for the ball and not hiding. Celar looked better with Frey out there and Smyth needed a force 3 wind to knock him over (not great, but better than being blown over by a fart).

Back to four centre backs across the back four, Colback in and Chair and Smyth in for Anderson and Saito. In other words Nardi and the 11 from last season.

Great new signings there, Christian, good working blowing all of the budget on reserves whi are not up to scratch.

Rammed if you do, Rammed if you don't - Derby Vs Qpr Match Thread
at 08:43 5 Oct 2024

A lot of that resonates with me. They are all so desperate to get back in shape for goal kicks and to move the ball side to side breaking the press out wide. THE SSAME OLD, SAME OLD ALL THE FRIGGIN' TIME.

We are not the only ones to do that, so undoubtedly this is just the modern way.

To officially confirm my old man status, I don't like this modern way one little bit.

Morning cuppa, then off to Winchester station to pick the lad up, who stayed out last night. He got to bed at 4am last night after losing the mate he was meant to be staying with and iss already up and about on his way.

Just win, Rangers, just f-in win PLEASE.
See you there...

Team for Derby
at 18:30 3 Oct 2024

Paal is not the answer to any Q in this QPR side, Poor full back (can't defend, can't cross, can't beat a man) and awful option in midfield.

Until January if Colback can't play, its Field and Varane or Madsen. THERE IS NO-ONE ELSE.

Got to hope these players find a game or Marti finds a system to hide some of our passengers in or this is going to be a long season.

Would have put cash on us to beat Derby at the start of this season. Not now though on what I have seen over the last four games.

We HAVE to score first and then hang on.

Tactical approach

He can't.

We did not sign Hayden.

The new signings bar Nardi have NOT improved last season's starting eleven (yet).

Did NOT expect to be in a relegation fight this season, but, here we are AGAIN.

Hull Reflection

I am worried after that. Expected soooooo much more this season, but we are in a relegation fight yet again. As others have said, ballers galore and no nasty grafters that we all know are needed in the Championship.

Apparently we are not allowed to criticise Marti, but last season is done now. It may not be HIS recruitment (which may be THE problem) and yes it is early days, but aside from Nardi, none of the signings have improved the first eleven.

My concern is that we have been universally poor for the last four games yet he sets the team up the same way and doesn't try anything different.

The team play with such little urgency you wonder if they are at all arsed with it all and STILL can't take throw ins.

Getting v worried...

Never a straight Red Card
at 16:58 29 Sep 2024

Always a red when he lunged in like that. Yes Travis is a twt, yes Batth made a meal of it and yes their player lunging in on Anderson was no different apart from the fact Lucas jumped out of the way, but he was walking the moment he lost control of that ball.

Would have been screaming for a red if that was against us.

Why do they even give these refs a choice? There is not one single ref in the Championship that I'd trust to get ANY decision right, so don't even give them any choice...

The no ones bothered Blackburn match thingy
at 15:40 28 Sep 2024

Exactly this. That first half was anyone's; two mediocre teams going at it.

Varane cost us big, big time. As soon as they scored we were done. Needed to hold on a lot longer than we did, but couldn't.

We'll be ok, but it is going to be closer that we'd all have hoped.

Jury out on the recruitment, bar Nardi who was superb again.

Brain dead. Santos should have gone the minute before for a second yellow (surely he can't come out for the second half?) and then that

No need. All his own doing because he lost control (in so many ways). Shit game between two very ordinary mid table Championship teams. Any result possible before that, now unlikely we get anything out of this. Second half going to be a hard watch. 6 shots in the whole half, three each none on target by us.

Dull without Chair.

Santos HAS to come off before he gets sent off and does he replace Saito with Madsen to plug the gap?

*sigh*

The spine is there, the rest is not working
at 11:43 23 Sep 2024

Agree that our CBs and the current CF are not the problem and agree that defensively Field is part of a strong spine. However, offensively the problem is everywhere in front of the two CBs and behind the CF.

As said on another thread, no-one DEMANDS the ball and then progresses it. Sadly, aside from Yellow Card Colback, I am yet to see anyone fulfill that role in this team.

They are also frightened to take quick goal kicks as we are not in our structure. Guess what, guys; neither is the opposition so that might be a perfect idea!

And if Frey gets injured, we'll have the spine of an earth worm.

The midfield hole
at 12:08 22 Sep 2024

Cutting through much of the tactical jargon on this thread, the one point from the OP that resonated with me is that no-one comes looking, demanding the ball. Yes, Paal has started to get in those positions, but he just stands there. If he does get passed to (rarely), his instinct is to keep possession by playing a safe ball back to the CBs. Field in the same, butter least he looks for it.

Varane is showing some signs of wanting the ball, but is no better as he looks back first. Colback is the only one that shows signs of wanting to progress.

...and in front of them, I see the same. No-one demands the ball as though they have been banned from doing something other than the "sacred game plan". Too formulaic, too predictable.

We need to do something different and better.

Something is not quite working at the moment. Could be the new boys bedding in could be that we don't have someone who can hold on to the ball (even if it is for too long according to the LFW forum). Take away the safe side to side YAWN inducing passing and we'll have THE worst %pass completion in the league a) because we are static in front of JCS and Cook when they have the ball and b) as someone else posted on this thread, weren't take risks until we are one down.

Hoping Marti finds a solution quick, because it looks to me that we have become predictable and without dynamic, adaptable players we'll needs plan B..
