That's an important point

We simply don't know how those joining the board (whilst saving everyone's skins, including the co-Chairman's) are going about their relationship with the old guard. It certainly appears to be one of mutual agreement and friendship. I wonder - if push came to shove - whether they'd take the word of the existing board members should fans express a need for a change in outlook. Or, how long they'd be prepared to bide their time, perhaps with a few gentle hints to begin with, rather than coming in and looking to dominate proceedings in an arena they have no familiarity with

My take would be to maintain solidarity among the board, who have good reason to resent the way they were viewed (rightly or wrongly) by sections of the fanbase before the Ogdens arrived on the scene

That's why i referred earlier to taking care that any questions/points raised, either at the forum or elsewhere, didn't come across as outright criticism; rather, seeking to find a way forward for all of us

If not, there's a danger of (yet another) "us and them" situation developing, which helps no-one. A three year plan is in place: not just about what happens on the field but right throughout the club and its aim of community engagement. To start off (just a few weeks in) on the wrong foot could be disastrous for that project. I really do think we need to be patient, given that we could all be facing the start of a new season with absolutely nothing to watch

I commented in reply to the reminder about the forthcoming fans forum that perhaps people were in "wait and see" mode

I can't make this next one, but it appears there are a number of questions that could be raised regarding fan engagement

I think it's important that any points/questions should be raised without it being seen as criticism, but rather as a way of helping the new regime move in the right direction

Completely agree it's not confined to skin colour

I wouldn't say Waugh has rowed back since i stand by what i said about his immediate requirement in the heat of the situation - regarding his own constituents. The BBC have, but no surprise there

The reason why it's not a "skin colour" issue is because white criminals resisting arrest in the same way might well have seen the officer involved reacting the way he did

It's the extremists trying to make it a racist issue: Waugh's words ensured that tensions in the town didn't have petrol poured on them. Andy Burnham gave a more rounded view, having seen all the footage at an early stage, but he's not MP for Rochdale

Edit: i was referring to those members of the family at the airport, and those he visited at their home

I completely get what you're saying, and appreciate your first hand experience

When you refer to the "family", i assume you mean those at the airport incident. When Paul Waugh visited the family at home before issuing his statement, his immediate concern was to defuse a potential powder keg within and between communities. The main point he made was that the family had no wish to associate themselves with extremists or ongoing violence. Waugh did the right thing, and did it well imo

The underlying issue here is, why the younger generations aren't being socialised by their elders to respect the law and the wider communities in which we all have to live

They're his constituents, the police involved aren't

His actions helped calm the racial tensions. If you're looking to stoke them up, you've come to the wrong place. Those involved in the initial attack on police looking to arrest them will receive sentences in line with their criminality

Big Jim's contract extension?
at 12:53 27 Jul 2024

He will have had the salary structures for the footballing side explained to him, as part of his budget remit. He will understand better than most how attempts at breaking those structures can lead to difficulties within clubs

As stated, he's very fortunate to be given his chance, and that won't change in the space of another few months

Putting a gun to the club's head (i.e. pay me more of i'll look elsewhere) has no resonance within a town like Rochdale. The new board have saved the club - and his job. I very much doubt he'd have disrespected that within a short timeframe

It's all theoretical anyway. The reality is a season gone when JM should've got a better tune out of the squad he had, even within its limitations

He could try, but i'd fully expect our new board to politely explain the opportunity he's been granted and also that in life, the grass will not be greener elsewhere; or at least, not for long

JM is very fortunate to have his opportunity here. Whether we're fortunate to have him remains to be seen

If there was visible progress at that point, a two-year extension to his current deal would've made a lot of sense to everyone, and would've taken us to the three-year projection for re-entry to the football league

On a positive note, have to say our new MP Paul Waugh has acquitted himself very well in the media and in parliament on this issue, seeking to calm tempers and liaising with all concerned, including families involved to put their point of view forward, which is to not allow extremists to take over the agenda

Thank goodness it wasn't Galloway dealing with it, we'd have rioting in the town by now

Don't think it'll be long before he comes to the attention of the leadership in terms of greater responsibility

With this going on, it's no surprise there's not been much forthcoming about the playing side of things during pre-season (ref: 442Dale)

Perhaps that will change now? Even so, can't say i'm thrilled about it and there's no such thing (as yet) as "Jim McNulty's Barmy Army" due to our life-draining performances. Can he now turn that around? He absolutely can't say he's not being supported by the club, so there's only one way to go. We shall see

I'm not averse to exploring the Great British Pub within any radius, especially with much more leisure time these days

I expect you'll expand your radius in due course, with the circles within which you move

Enjoy!

Incidentally, have you been in the King Bill recently?

Called in for a sunny pint last Friday afternoon after a walk up on the moors at the back. Relaxing it wasn't. The owners have waiting staff pouncing on customers asking "Would you like more drinks?". One couple were asked by three different staff in the space of two minutes - just after they'd been served drinks in the pub garden
