Dunne off?
at 00:47 2 Feb 2025

Slightly off the point, but it struck me today that Dunne is sort-of the reverse Paul Parker.

Parker was known as a right-back at Fulham, then Jim Smith (or more likely Peter Shrives IMO) hit on playing him in central defence. In an era when the big target man striker was king and centre halves were all massive you could see the puzzlement in opposing teams when, e.g, Kevin Sharpe won nothing in the air as little Parker soared above them.

Dunne looks exactly like a centre half of that era and has had his moments in that position but has really hit form as a right back.

My point is that Parker's centre half form at QPR got him into the England side and a big money move to Man Utd, and in both cases they played him at right back, where he was decent and never looked out of place in those teams, but frankly he was never as dominant as he was when he payed for us. I'm willing to bet that if Dunne goes to Sheff Utd they play him in central defence and he'll be OK but never the cult hero he is for us as the Irish Cafu.

Abuse in modern football
at 23:47 27 Jan 2025

Got to agree with this.

Most of us meet and talk to God knows how many people every day. How often do you see a fight or a shouting match break out in normal life, outside of someone being boozed up or just off their head? Hardly ever.

In certain places, though, apparently it's OK*. For some reason, football grounds have been like that since forever, and social media/online is another. On the road quite often another.

There are people on here who have posted gazillions of times without ever starting an argument with anyone, people that I for one will read as soon as I see the avatar. There are others who start a ruck regularly. I bet in a secret ballot 90% of us would put the same names in each category.

* It f ucking isn't.

I'm sure you're right on that, I was certainly at the game with the marching band. Evening game, I can't remember the opposition. It was pretty much spontaneous and certainly pre-dated the Peter Reid version.

I always thought we missed a trick on that - it was a real morale raiser in what was a lousy season, and it had the classic "You'll never walk alone" trick of football anthems of not actually having anything to do with the club or football at all, so we didn't need to alter it - it was other clubs who needed to change it to make it relevant to them.

Then next season, as soon as other clubs were singing it, we dropped it.

Pigbag was definitely ours too, can't remember why.

Appliance Repairs - Who Bothers these days?

There's some sort of gag about it being cheaper to buy a new Taylor Richards than repair the one we own but I'm too fed up after losing to bloody Sheff Wednesday to bother working it out.

This has me genuinely wondering whether scouts (including ours) try having a chat with fans in the pub as well as watching the players.

I reckon you'd pick up a certain amount

The rule seems to be that storms get to be named named by whatever country they hit first.

Presumably this one comes to us via Middle Earth.

I don't have a problem playing a loanee as such, which is why I'm OK with Edwards.

I do have a problem with playing a loanee solely to develop them for another club. If that's what's going on then Newcastle should be paying us.

I think the "signed from Yeovil" thing comes into it too.

Every minute he's on the pitch, Alfie Lloyd acts like his lottery numbers have just come up for him to be there.

Maybe in five years time he'll be in non-league and Madsen will be a Danish international, but I can't help feeling that Lloyd's attitude will take him as far as he can go while Madsen's could leave him well short of his potential. And that Alfie Lloyd will have more fun on the way however far he gets.

TBH for me it's not so much lack of tackling (though obviously I'd like to see it, and I don't think he should be excused it), because I don't think he was signed for that - it's the lack of stuff that I presumed that he was signed for - possession football, passes that unlock the opposition defence. Even when you're playing to hold on to a lead, there's a place for that stuff as part of controlling the game and stopping the other side from getting back in. If he can't do that either, then what's he for?

Admittedly only based on screening and highlights, I'm not seeing it, and I really don't get why it doesn't seem to bother him more. Without getting above ourselves, the Championship is higher profile than the Belgian top flight, we're a chance for him to make it big and he's running the risk of getting sent back to the same level as he was a year ago.

If a miracle happened and we went up via the playoffs
at 00:12 22 Jan 2025

OK, so this is now starting to seem like not a silly question, even if still very unlikely.

I'd say "No", but not because I don't want us in the Premier League.

I think it's a year too early. Kids like Kolli, Lloyd, Saito, Morgan are having fun in the Championship. If the pressure of relegation is off and we aren't fretting over promotion either, they have the chance to express themselves and grow. Follow that up with a season of being hammered in the Premiership and you might take the innocence out of them.

Give us a fun run in to May, maybe one or two good signings, and then let's go next year.

Ashby injured or hooked?

The issue with Dunne was the potential need to play him as CB. If Fox and Edwards can cover those positions with cameos from JCS, then I make you right.

We've seen other players written off start to make an impact (Fox is one of them) but if we're hoping to do that with a player it's better for it to be Santos, who is ours, than Ashby who isn't.

Good calls there, IMO.

That gnarly-old-pro alongside Excellent Young Boy (Glossary alert) combo is pretty decent and probably what we need until all the injuries come back.

Leicester defeat a disaster??
at 23:35 21 Jan 2025

What I will say is that I always felt criticism of the manager for his selection that match was completely unwarranted.

As we saw tonight, Cifuentes doesn't play Madsen, Harrison or Edwards because he thinks it doesn't matter if we lose, they are players in his squad and he can't afford not to use them sometimes.

But I suspect that we'll be seeing a lot more of Edwards than Ashby for the rest of the season.

Honestly I don't think anyone who was peed off at us letting in six (having been good value for 1-1) needs to apologise, I think that JCS was spot-on in his reaction to that defeat, it wasn't good enough.

What's really pleasing is that the players haven't let it knock them off course, they've picked themselves up and delivered.

So no apology from me, but a round of applause certainly.
