Glimmers of hope extinguished by the same old problems.
at 09:29 20 Oct 2024

Agree Berber. Alot of those issues have been prevalent for a number of seasons including during Ralph's reign. We don't seem to get managers or coaches who are not just tactically naieve or incompetent (depending on which way you look at it) but seem unable to instill a strong mental, never say die fighting attitude when things go against you or to take sides to the sword when we have the chance to.

Summers signings not in today's squad

Totally agree Cocklebreath. The Ref was dreadful from the start from a Saints perspective. His decisions favoured the opposition throughout but we can't allow it to hide all our own failings.

Glimmers of hope extinguished by the same old problems.
at 23:03 19 Oct 2024

There have been glimmers of hope in our games recently but that hope has been extinguished by what is now age old problems:-

- failure to capitalise on the rare occasion we take the lead (though we have taken the lead in the last 3 games);
- failure to protect our leads;
- consistently poor defending no matter whom we seem to play in those positions and with that rare clean sheets;
- lack of resilience and mental strength when we concede;
- inability to come back from a losing position;
- consistently concede late in games;
- lack of tactical nouse;
- poor use of substitutions

KWP and Dibling are our stand out players but I don't fancy our chances to retain them.

How Will Russell Martin Be Seen By Saints Fans After Today
at 09:49 19 Oct 2024

It is a win and nothing else will do. We then need to repeat that in the following home game against Everton (as it is unlikely away to Man City is going to bring any joy). Lose or even draw today and it will be difficult to see RM surviving.

The best English Manager not considered for England job
at 12:24 18 Oct 2024

If Tuchel does well then no one will give a jot where he is from or what he sings (except our wonderful media and will find some way to undermine him as they do all English managers irrespective of their origins!).

I am surprised Howe was not approached but it could come down to timing and availability and no doubt cost all being factors.

Anyway, I hope England do well but it will depend on the players and how they behave and engage with the manager and the national team - am I surprised that the supposedly injured Saka is available for Arsenal tomorrow........not really.

Tuchel
at 22:07 15 Oct 2024

I have nothing against Tuchel personally, in fact, I quite like him. However, I think the manager of the national team along with the players should (on the whole) come from the country that you are representing (some exceptions would be small nations with small populations and/or limited options). It is a sad indictment that with the scale of football in this country, the number of clubs and the amount of money in our game we cannot find an English manager of quality to lead the national team.

There will be some irony if we earn out first trophy for a very long time under a German manager - it would be even more ironic if that is against his own country.

All that aside, the choice has now been made and I wish him well and I hope the players respond and he gets the support any England manager needs.

It was a total mess. There were many times it felt like I was watching Saints. Messing around our own box with the opposition pressing and invariably we give it away, passes going astray. What astounded me was the ease at which Greece regularly cut through the midfield and defence with barely an attempt to tackle or stop them. I can get that they were not used to the system but these are some of our best players and did not even do the basics which is irrespective of any system. Pickford was awful as was Stones and Foden.

I thought Carsley got off lightly with the media. Trying new systems is one thing but just 20 mins of trying it and then applying it in a competitive game is questionable.

Southampton At Arsenal The Verdict
at 16:23 7 Oct 2024

My overall take on the game and day is that I was going into it without much sense of joy or expectation and anticipating the worse and yet came away feeling that I had largely seen an entertaining game and though we still lost and we still had alot of errors I was pleased with our overall performance. That doesn't hide the fact we still lost, we desperately need some points and spirit and fight alone is not going to keep us up - though I was asking myself - where was that fight against Bournemouth and Notts Forest and Brentford? Are we a team of players who try to put on a show when certain clubs are in town?

The good aspects was:-
- the fight and spirit;
- players effort and endeavour throughout - no one really had a bad game;
- Bednarek was immense - I wish he was like that more often;
- Dibling really looks the deal and the vultures will soon be circling
- KWP excellent - why would you drop him?
- Archer is worth sticking with - he is not going to change our fortunes alone but he does look like he knows where the goal is;
- Onuachu - I enjoyed his cameo performance and he made the Arsenal defence uncertain. Worth a try as long as we play to his height etc. Probably one to bring on off the bench.

The Arsenal second goal would have been wiped off had it been the other way around. The bias in decisions is obvious but what can anyone do about it?

Sugaware mistake was unfortunate as I think he largely had a good game and he generally reads the game well.

Ramsdale was good.

Our fans were good. Vocal and humourous - the Arsenal fans who were trying to create the Thunderclap/Ultras atmosphere near to us received a rendition of "your just a poor Crystal Palace" - to be fair - I don't think many Arsenal fans were that impressed with the few either. The other good thing about our fans is, that they mostly stayed behind when the final whistle went and received the team well at the end. It showed the support is there.

Where does this leave us with RM? It has bought him a bit of time and it feels like Leicester is the critical game now for all sorts of reasons. I think we have some promise in the team but up until Arsenal we had not had a difficult set of games but only have one point to show for it. I am not convinced RM will turn it around enough but equally, if all SR are looking at is someone like Eustace, Corboran etc then I am not sure the story will change.

The main downside of the day was 3hrs 10mins on the train back and nearly midnight before I got through my front door. Thank heavens therefore that I enjoyed game, as strange as that may seem.

Am I hearing correctly that he is not available again? If true, what the flipping hell is wrong with him this time?

Tips For Saints Supporters Visiting The Emirates From Arsenal ISA
at 19:32 3 Oct 2024

There is something in that Matt. I am going (for my sins) but given we are all expecting it to be a drubbing or at least a day of little footballing joy on the pitch it would be kind of more enjoyable if we made it some sort of seize mentality party off it.

I can't believe I am going to this game. 240 miles on Hull trains to Kings Cross (as LNER East coast has engineering works.......again!) - 3 hours each way, then the cost of the day itself and all for what........to see us get roundly beaten.........again! You might think that at my age and over 45 years of watching them I would have seen some sense!

So many questions - very few answers.
at 08:16 1 Oct 2024

The morning after another sickening Saints performance and so many questions. Of the 3 teams promoted we have in theory had the easiest of starts in terms of fixtures and yet you wouldn't think so. We spent £100m in the squad this summer and yet we are not seeing anything like a team that can challenge anyone in the PL (no matter who they are). So:-
- having put in a half decent performance against Ipswich at home why did that team perform so poorly in the first half last night?
- why did Lallana not start the game at least?
- why when we go a goal behind do we seem to collapse/capitulate so readily? We never ever look like coming back?
- Why do we seem so weak mentally and physically to have any fight?
- why amongst our squad do we not have a single striker that looks capable of hitting the back of the net? They haven't scored one goal yet, let alone any notion of them getting to double figures

Nicely summed up in one word. Where was the effort in that first half? Why did we capitulate so easily?

Well given how many goals we have conceded since Ramsdale has joined you would have to say the second option is more likely. I wonder though what you would get for a bet on Saints winning at Arsenal?

Agree Grim. They are nothing special but they know how to make the best of what they have in key games and they have a go. We always appear to be afraid of our own shadows. We play with fear whereas Bournemouth and other teams like Brentford play with freedom and belief.

Another sorry night for our team in the PL. I really wanted RM to succeed. I felt he should be given a chance and he seems a decent man. I was not looking for him to go and my expectations were realistic for this season, but I thought we would show more guile and ability than what we have shown and it is difficult to see RM turning it around. I am not sure anyone can to be honest as I don't think we have the team to do it. We have no one who can strike a ball into the net and that won't change this side of January and by then we could be so adrift that no one of any standing would even consider joining us.

It is difficult to see how RM can remain in post if the board really want to have a go at staying in this division but a change will not necessarily guarantee a different outcome but not to change probably shows an acceptance of the likely outcome - albeit so early in the season.

We should not have been promoted. We were along way from being ready and it shows. I am not even sure a change of manager can change the script. I have a ticket for Saturday and I am dreading it. Ramsdale will be dreading it too no doubt.

Southampton Monitoring Another Championship Manager
at 11:47 23 Sep 2024

The thing is, will it make much difference who the manager is, if your strike force can't hit a barn door? Whatever you may think about RM and his tactics, there is little he can do if the players that are paid to score are not good enough to even when they get gilt edged chances.

I always thought this supposed issue about changing where the home fans were was a load of BS anyway. I have been going to games for the best part of 45 years and we are just not the most vocal of fans. We have our moments and it is a bit of a chicken and egg situation. We respond well when we believe the team is responding well. But, the team will argue they need us to lift them. We are not bad fans we are just not the most vocal - equally though, we are probably more patient than most other fans.

I think he flatters to deceive. He will be good for us when we are in the Championship but we needed better if we were serious about competing and staying in the PL.
