Transfer rumours 2024
at 10:06 2 Jul 2024

Although I think £40 million is too high a valuation, Tottenham buying Gray for that amount is basically the same as when they bought Bale & Clarke. One of those came good & one didn't.

The direct comparisons are with Bellingham & Palmer, but good luck to Gray in trying to match their achievments! For a start, Tottenham are unlikely to give Gray the same opportunities to advance as Dortmund did. Personally, I thought Dortmund & The Pensioners were bonkers paying those amounts at the time! Palmer had only made 19 appearances for City.

The amount is different, but were Liverpool mad to pay "over the top" for Sterling? As a 14 year old, that was a far bigger gamble.

In my view, commentators have gone overboard with their praise of Gray last season & that unsurprisingly, his form tailed off as the season progressed. Exactly what you would expect in his first season & at that age. He is, however, the outstanding English teenager around at present.

I've no idea how clubs place a value on potential, but it definitely inflates the price.

I'm not sure where this centre position is that you mention.

Unless you consider Blair as central (further to the right of Ted), I don't think we've had that since Heath!

England v Slovakia last 16 Match Thread
at 12:56 1 Jul 2024

The 86 & 90 World Cups had rounds of 16 & we beat Paraquay & Belgium in them.

The difference is that Robson made major changes in those years after the group stage had been near disasters. Bringing Beardsley in to play alongside Lineker in 86 & changing to a back three with Parker playing in 90.

Southgate appears to me to be trying to accommodate his "star" players rather than finding a system that suits. Foden is not a wide left player, especially when we're not playing a left back, Bellingham & Kane have no understanding either.

Gomez must have been included in the squad as cover for left back & he has played more games in that position than anyone except Shaw, yet it's looking like he is about 5th choice for the role. 5th choice (or 6th) is what he was at Liverpool last season as a centre half!

The standard rate of VAT has been:-

2011/24 20%
2010/11 17.5%
2009/10 15%
1992/2009 17.5%
1979/92 15%
1974/79 8%
1973/74 10%

Between 1974 & 1979 there was a higher rate as well, but I've no idea what goods qualified for this.

The first time I can remember "staying up"was as a 12 year old in 1964. Polling ended at 9.00pm then (not 21.00 as the 24 hour clock was yet to reach the UK!) & so the first results were declared earlier than now.

The daily papers listed all the constituency candidates on the day of the election & all of the results on the Saturday. I spent hours studying them. Just like I did for the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup & FA Amateur Cup!

I'm sure my geography knowledge of England comes from getting out a UK road atlas & looking to see where the constituencies & football teams were in the country!

Season Ticket Sales

I think that sales will rise considerably this week.

I suspect there are ST holders that would have waited till the last days before spending the money.

Potential update on Illias Chair...
at 14:06 20 Jun 2024

This is the moral dilemma that Clive has often referred to since February & when he was sentenced. The translation is very similar to what the Antwerp press reported at the time of sentence.

What appears different to other players in the past, is that Chair has now taken full responsibility for his actions & is showing remorse.

This is my understanding of the translation as well.

The appeal was against the sentence rather than the conviction & that Chair (and his lawyer) were arguing for community service rather than imprisonment. It won't be known until the decision of the appeal is released on the 17th July, whether he has to spend time in prison.

The important point that I've taken from the translation is that he has now taken full responsibility for his actions & I've no doubt that his remorse is genuine.

I assume that he will be able to take a full part in pre season training & that he only has a month to wait before knowing the outcome.

Chelsea & Brentford at home on the 18th, so we must be away & home on the 11th.

I'm fairly sure it is Brentford that we are paired with for home/away matches.

Yes, it is Griffin Park
at 09:15 18 Jun 2024

At the risk of opening up old wounds, Denis Signy stated that the "takeover" conversation started with a discussion between Jim Gregory & the Brentford chairman as to how much larger the crowd would be if the Carlisle (or Leicester) League Cup game had been at Griffin Park.

My first experience of the ground was for an FA Cup first round match against Chesham. Due to travel problems from Ipswich (A12 & train delays are not new!) it was half time before I arrived & all the gates were shut. However, I was spotted trying different entrances & was allowed in at no cost. Brentford won 2-0.

England QPR XI

I'm biased, of course, towards our side of the 70's & always judge our "stars" on whether they would have made the 75/76 squad!

My team probably wouldn't win many games as there would be a lack of defenders, but look at the footballing ability they would offer! And I've had to leave out our best goalscorer - Clive Allen.

Phil Parkes

Dave Clement
Paul Parker
Terry Fenwick
Ian Gillard

Dave Thomas
Gerry Francis
Andy Sinton

Rodney Marsh
Les Ferdinand
Stan Bowles
