Rammed if you do, Rammed if you don't - Derby Vs Qpr Match Thread
at 23:25 4 Oct 2024

Derby have only won 2 more games than us. They’ve also lost more times and unlike us haven’t been able to score in every game.

I think we can win tomorrow and I’m predicting 2-0.

Come U’rsss!

What you describe isn't Madsen. Can we not just have someone from the centre of the Madsen/Colback venn-diargram? Is that too much to ask?

Edit: I've scrapped my comment. No need for negative before a game. I will stop going on about Madsen.

Agree, definitely not a dud, but VERY frustrating. He needs to be a little more versatile. Doesn’t need to turn into Charles Bronson but could get a bit more stuck in! It’s his application not ability that’s the issue. It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, I want him to succeed.

I wouldn’t describe any of our signings as a ‘luxury’. Maybe ‘a waste of money’ or a ‘typical QPR punt’, but definitely not ‘luxury’.

Madsen isn’t ‘the’ problem in the side, but he is a big problem. I know some are taken by his ‘languid’ style and potential (if only we built our team around our Danish Dozzell upgrade) but he’s going to be crap more often than he’s good and we’ll continue to have the same conversations. That said…we are stuck with him so it is probably worth trying to fit in him somehow - not building a team around him but at least getting him playing in his optimal position.

The sad truth is the team is also rubbish more often than it’s good. I think we need to adjust our expectations. We’re not play-off contenders and we definitely shouldn’t be in relegation battle.

Hopefully something will click and well see improved performances across the team.

Any standout performances so far from QPR? Do we look like we’ll get back in the game?

Really disappointed with Andersen. He was excellent when in form, but seems to have completely fallen off.

So frustrating!

I don’t have a problem with this or with pineapple on pizza. My line in the sand is chicken on a pizza. Completely unacceptable.

If you elect to play with a Dozzell style player - even if he’s a marginal upgrade - you’re basically starting with 10 men.

I understand the ‘potential’ such a player has, but at this level you’re not going to see those benefits. Madsen like Dozzell will be crap and missing in games more often than we can afford.

If man of his size can’t handle the physicality of the game or just doesn’t have that competitive instinct to get stuck in, then he’s a passenger we can’t afford to carry.

I accept that because it’s our level. What I don’t accept is the mental arithmetic people do when assessing certain players.

I predicted a 2-0 win for Rovers. The trajectory of our performances are on the down, not up. So no surprise we lost. We’ve not been playing like a team that will ‘come good’.

There’s usually a signing each season that gives me an indication of travell, last season it was Smyth and this time it’s Madsen. Result and performance as expected. No need to sh*t the bed, we’re living and performing within our means and capability.

This is it. I'm aware of the politics, but surely there's a club closer to home they can wave their tiny Union Jacks?

They were also quite friendly which was also very strange. To be fair, I was just minding my own business eating carrot sticks and hummus whilst reading the G2 film and music supplement.

Not strictly on the topic of the 'modern football fan'...

I was on my way back from Sheffield a few weeks ago and at Doncaster I was joined by a load of Chelsea fans commuting down for a game. None of them were from London, all Yorkshire men. They were also talking about going to watch Rangers (the Glasgow variety) I am aware of this 'Blues Brothers' connection, but what I find strange is that they were from Doncaster. How do you end up supporting Chelsea?! They weren't even young, probably 50+.

Most people I know and have met from Yorkshire are proud of where they're from and I could never imagine them supporting a London football club.

The typical modern football fan - constant crisis, ‘hot takes’ and limbs. In answer to the question what went wrong - social media.

Absolutely nothing appealing about modern football in the top flight and nothing appealing about the fan experience. Anyway, the people on this forum aren’t the target audience and we thankfully support an unfashionable club.

There are other types of modern football fans, those that have more sophisticated tastes and interests. There are forums and magazines that cater for those people and this place is a great example of that - it’s sits perfectly between the blizzard, WSC and Mundial.

What you’ve identified is the eternal problem with most of our players of the last few seasons. Technical ability devoid of application. Most analysis leans towards the ‘if they just did a bit more of this’ or ‘they played here instead of there’…etc. Better to have a player who knows where he needs to be and lacks a bit of technical ability than someone who has the ability but does nothing with it.

The crucial difference with Madsen and players like him is they go missing in games far too often. Saito and Dembele can and will likely improve and be greater assets to the team. I just don’t see it with Madsen. We don’t need him, he need a Colback style player. That’s the bottom line. Unless of course we just want to watch a ‘languid’ player all season?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We can’t afford to have a player like him in this team on the off chance he does what he did against Luton. He’ll play badly more than he’ll play well.

But it’s okay, because he plays with a ‘languid’ style and he needs more time to acclimatise to Championship football.

Aside from LFW my two favourite QPR related websites are:

'QPR Land' - It's the digital version of an obsessed amateur detectives bedroom.

&

The history section of the QPR report message board:

Very different vibe to the contemporary corners of the internet.

Genius Eze inevitably wraps return narrative – Report

And let's not forget that the views expressed are set against VERY low standards that have been set by the club and players over the past few seasons.

So when people quote directly from LFW glossary - 'x player needs time' - when clearly x player is displaying the same issue as their predecessor, I think people can be forgiven for their criticism. If anything, it is the rational position to take. Maybe Celar is an upgrade on Dykes? Maybe Madsen is 'languid'? Maybe Marti picked the strongest 11 available to him? Maybe I should consider all the nuance even if the outcome is the same?
