Perfectly good goal. Much more annoyed about this than the red card.
Pawson felt all day to me like a Premier League referee a bit pissd off to be slumming it with the likes of us. Often in the way of the play, lazy decisions, phoned in performance. Much easier to just give the free kick there so he gives it. I thought for a referee who's doing Champions League football this season it was pretty appalling really.
But, in the interests of 'no excuses culture' and 'control what you can control' - Smyth misses an absolute sitter in the six yard box after five minutes when we'd started quite well. Score that, take it out of the referee's hands. |

As this thread has shown, it's a subjective decision. This is why VAR was always destined to fail - three fans, ex players, managers can all sit and watch the same incident and not agree on whether it's a red, a penalty, a handball etc.
I think a couple of things influenced the referee: Santos was incredibly lucky not to be sent off about ten seconds before; and Travis' ridiculous histrionics made it look like Varane had killed the bloke.
But we need to control what we can control. It's ten seconds to half time, it's a neutral area of the pitch, do we need to be making that challenge? Roy Keane says this a lot about the red cards he got in his career - did I give the referee a decision to make? You can slow it down, you can argue the toss, but Varane has given the referee a decision to make.
It was a stupid thing to do. |

Keep your eye on the trains if you're going that way. Euston and Avanti a write off today due to flooding/trees on the line, and a fatality at Watford.
