The one other independent I'd look out for (going completely under the radar) is Jason Zadrozny in Ashfield. Was a very strong second in 2019, his Ashfield Independents party has absolutely eviscerated Tories, Labour and Lib Dems on his local council (32 out of 35 seats in the 2023 elections) and is now up against - Lee Anderson - elected as Tory, defected to RefUK - Tories - Labour, who held the seat previously. That sets up a four-way contest (unless Zadrozny gets swamped by the Big Boys, which I think unlikely when he has a disciplined local election winning machine behind him) so thecwinning vote is likely to eb quite low, which I think will suit him. (Zadrozny is one of the more interesting figures in British politics, but you will never hear of him in the national media because he's not in a national party and he's not an obvious grifter like Galloway or Farage.) |

If you drain a swamp, aren't you just left with a lot of dead frogs lying around in a wasteland of stagnant mud, like a more upmarket version of Stamford Bridge? Sorry, that may be my Wetland Trust membership kicking in. Also: still wrong thread. |

I see the logic of selling Paal but have to say that apart from players who Marti obviously doesn't rate (e.g. Dozzell) or who he's only used because there wasn't any alternative (e.g. Begovic) I'd really like to see a year of him being able to work with the current squad plus reinforcements. I'm not saying that makes sense financially, and I won't be chucking toys about if e.g. Chair or Willock are sold, but if possible I like to see that growth and development in the squad rather than Redknapp style buying and selling. |

Spain look the dog's wotsits but Austria have been very good and I'm afraid the Germans are belying a lot of the comments they got pre-tournament, so I'd definitely have those ahead of us. The Swiss have also been more than decent. France have been mediocre but if they start playing would be a threat. Still, fact is that we're in the quarters and France, Austria, Belgium, the Dutch etc aren't yet and Italy are out. So who knows? |

Exactly this. I genuinely think we owe a debt to Southgate since 2016. He took over a team with no culture or spirit, and God knows we were lucky to get him instead of Allardyce. He's delivered qualification for tournament more or less as routine, (which it should be, but wasn't) and has regularly got us further into tournaments than anyone except Ramsey, Venables and Robson, and done it more often even than them. But. Currently we're awful to watch. I'd watch Marti's QPR over this lot every time. And it's not a matter of winning ugly, we're barely winning at all. I don't know if they're shagged out after the English season, carrying injuries, messed up by (in some cases) playing out of position, lacking motivation or just don't understand the system, but one way or another players way more talented than QPR and generally more talented than the opposition (so far) look slower both physically and in their thinking than every team we play. I don't think Southgate is crap, I think he's very good at some things, but those aren't the things England need to take a step up right now. You can never tell in a knock-out competition, but I don't think we're in the top four sides in this tournament. |

They were a bit rubbish tbh, but I always thought there was mileage in a sort of McDonalds for kebabs. |

As a neutral kit, it's pretty cool. I always want hoops but I s'pose missing them out every few years or so is OK. Didn't hurt us when we won the League Cup or played in the FA Cup final. |

Sorta gone the other way for me. Beating Scotland in the Home Internationals was always a biggie for me as a kid and I had an absolute loathing for Ally McLeod (even though he did pick our own Don Masson). I'd have supported the Dutch in 1978 (in England's absence) anyway but I was absolutely delighted when Johnny Rep scored against the jocks. I kept that up well into the 90s including Euro 96 but since then I've gradually lost interest in hating them. Maybe I've grown up a bit. Scots are alright and their fans are OK these days.I can imagine it must be pretty irritating to turn on your national media and it's all England especially when tbh England are usually massively over-rated (as I fear is the case this time, so far.) Wouldn't mind Scotland doing OK so long as England do better but I'm afraid it really doesn't look on the cards any time soon. |

One for the ageing hippies, but my favourite concept album is Hawkwind's Space Ritual. Would have loved to have seen the shows. |

He was a big signing, though. I remember watching him play in the Euros for Czechoslovakia and being bloody impressive, then hearing he'd signed for us and being really chuffed, especially having lost Seaman. One of the best examples of proper planned transition QPR have managed IMO - bought Seaman when he was a hot prospect, sold him for a significant profit (at the time,) replaced him with a serious international keeper for less money. |

My recollection, too. Decent signing but both at the time and in hindsight I thought him a lesser player than Bannister and Byrne (who were in the side at the time) or Allen and Stainrod who had preceded them. Can't believe no-one has mentioned your namesake, who genuinely did cause a stir, and rightly so. |

Oh God, used to sing the first verse of that to my son as a lullaby when he was tiny (as he loved dragons.) Never knew how it ended or what it was really about until we saw a picture book of the thing, which we bought for him. Great excitement as he was allowed to have it as his bed-time read, followed by collapse when he got to the bit where Jackie whatsis grows up and never plays with the dragon again Hard to imagine now he's a gert bearded lump but there you go, that's parenthood for you. |
