It's not quite as simple as racking up debts to HMRC. This all comes back to EBTs, which were set up to allow small, co-op type companies to put aside a small amount of their wages into a trust to help employee benefits, etc. Then accountants spotted their usefulness and started using them for their rich clients. That's why virtually every club, in every sport, in this country has been using this as a form of tax evasion. Clive's Rugby league club is facing a million quid or so back payment I believe. A couple of years ago HMRC was given more staff to target this particular thing.

Incidentally, it's believed that Arsenal were given a £300million bill by HMRC for back taxes and negotiated it down to £10million. Utterly disgraceful.

Yeh £1.6m at Hull FC I believe, Pearson wasn't told about it when he bought the club so he says

I can't believe Whyte didn't know about this when he bought the club - surely he should be investigated if he so much as pockets a penny out of this.
No other business would such a thing happen.

Do you know if this is about image rights payments, or is it something different? I believe HMRC lost some cases in the courts against Arsenal, so they didn't negotiate it all away, they just couldn't enforce it. I believe United had a provision of about £6m for back payments at the time of their bond issue a couple of years back Also Joey Barton's image was worth £675,000 pa, even before Twitter.

Looks like not much has changed at the Broncos after all, mate. As long as they save the fifty point stuffings for away games...

As I understand it, it's the image rights again. It's been rife throughout British sport.

Sounds like a bad day for the Broncos, but then Warrington are awesome when they click. And Briers had a point to prove. It's always going to be tough against the big guns, but if they can stay relatively healthy then I think they'll go well against the rest of the league. All being well Huddersfield should be my first game of the season. Looking forward to it.

As if we needed further reminding how diabolical the SPL is, Glasgow Rangers will remain in 2nd place even with a 10 point deduction!

Its just another way to give your creditors a haircut and survive (as long as one of the creditors doesnt call your bluff and put you into liquidation). It may mean no money, but a great deal of satisfaction.

A few years ago I went to Ibrox to watch my second team Parma play them in the UEFA pre Champions League cup. I went down on the train but arranged through the local Rangers supporters club to go on the coach for the return journey as there were no trains to get me home that night. They kindly agreed to this for the return fare

After the match which was a draw I hid my Parma scarf and got on the coach For the next 4 hours I was subjected to a tape (yes it was a while ago ) of anti Catholic secterian songs all the way home The main instigator lived in a little village up here miles from the west of Scotland A really dreadful experience but it saved me a hotel in Glasgow which I thought would be a good idea ..it wasnt

On the positive side I was stopped by a couple of RFC fans who welcomed me to their country, they got a shock when I replied " Cheers Mate "

Never understood the sectarian thing still dont pathetic.Glasgow is a great place but you never see a Parick Thistle top

Used to work with a Partick supporter. Wore his yellow and red colours with pride and knew a good few anti Celtic/Rangers songs and jokes. Hated both with a passion as Partick fans do. Come to think of it ,so do I. Can't find a crumb of sympathy in my bones when anything goes tits up with those two clubs.

There aint half been some clever bastards.
