Bentley gone on 19:30 - Mar 27 by 49thseason | Its entirely possible they have reached a mutually satisfactory contract termination. Bentley has looked increasingly stressed as the season has gone on, not good for a man with a history of heart problems. Perhaps his family have told him its time to enjoy the summer free from football headaches. There is clearly little more he can say or do with this team, they either haven't listened to or couldnt carry out his orders, and the results speak for themselves. Going through managers at a rate of knots is never a good thing, everyone now must do their homework and figure out what they want and not just pick from a beauty parade of the usual suspects. Another thought, maybe this is another step towards announcing a new investor... clearing the decks.. |
Except there are plenty of other steps before announcing a new investor: From the start of the year: https://www.daletrust.co.uk/2023/01/10891/ <<“ We stated to the Board on Thursday that we believe any potential investor would need to meet with Shareholders and Supporters before any deal and we couldn’t have a situation where a statement suddenly appears on the Club’s website at 4pm on any one day stating that the Club has been sold. The Club replied stating that it would be impossible for that to happen these days with the EFL rules on ownership, something that the EFL have tightened up on in recent years. The process now requires due diligence by the Club ahead of any such deal which would allow any investor to build up trust with the Supporters. Any such deal now requires a two-year business deal put in place, and there are additional protections now in place at the Football Club that were not there two years ago. It was the belief of the Board that all but one other Club in League Two operates without an investor, and it is clear that they have done their due diligence with other Clubs to deals that they have been involved with, with one club in particular cited as a model we’d be keen to follow. We have offered to work with the Club and to meet with any potential investors, just as we did in April 2021 when we were introduced to a potential investor by then Chairman Andrew Kelly. That was followed with a further meeting and email correspondence before the decision was made not to pursue that deal. The Club are confident that an investor that matches the needs of the Club can be found.”>> ––––––– From the Trust’s February newsletter to members: <<“ Should we reach the the stage where the Club believe they have found a preferred investor, we would look to have an initial meeting with them at the earliest opportunity. That meeting would be to discuss the Club, the Supporters, the sorts of things that as fans we hold as being important and any concerns that we as supporters may have, whilst at the same time finding out as much about them as possible. We’d then start a period of due diligence of our own, whilst taking advice from the FSA about the best way to proceed with his. Having spent months doing extensive research into all those associated with the Morton House, we do have experience on this but hopefully the FSA will be able to assist in other areas.  We have made it clear that one thing we expect from the Club is the need for a public meeting for shareholders and supporters to attend to meet with any potential investors. This was one of our biggest concerns last time that the Club talked about investors with the fear the whole thing could be sorted out behind closed doors, and we reiterated this to the Board in December. We know there will be questions still arising after any public meeting, and then we will endeavour to get any answers to them.  At this point, we will ask the Trust membership about whether they want the Trust to give their backing to any deal. We have made it clear on numerous occasions that all big decisions by the Trust with regards to the Club are to be made by the Trust membership, and this will be no exception. This puts pressure on all parties, especially ourselves, to ensure that sufficient and correct information is provided to all members to allow them to make their decision.”>> ––––––– These are the agreed steps that are required to be followed, unless something has changed and been agreed? If so, details should be provided immediately to all supporters. [Post edited 27 Mar 2023 19:45]

In terms of EFL rules, if / when we are relegated - when exactly do we cease to be an EFL club. Last game of the season? Or some specific date in May / June. Ownership rules presumably change at that point? Making it easier ?? For a buyer?

Tbf to McNulty he was dropped in at the deep end first time around with one day prep for the Swindon away game. We then had Sheff Wed away in midweek where we always get spanked and then his final game we got our first point on the board v Crawley with Sinclair coming off bench to equalise. The experience of that first stint should help and he has a full week prep for the Dons game. Not saying he is the answer and I wasn’t all that convinced by his post match interviews but he shouldn’t be written off as a result of that first spell.

What options do we have really? We could barely attract a manager in League Two, we are now all but a league below in an even more perilous financial position than we were in September. What sort of manager do we want? Someone who’s been sacked by 4 other clubs? Someone fresh out of an academy setting who thinks results aren’t important? The only managerial gamble paying off for us that I can think of is Hill. Yes. He’s had a lot of ups and downs since he left us, however he’s also had a lot of reflection time. Think of the players he brought through this club. The broken toy model is going to be even more important now than ever before if we can get back into the league. Hill and Dunphy back ASAP please, ideally with some other sort of investor who is going to put some money up. Writing that last sentence is probably the most positive I’ve felt about the football club for a very long time. Let’s get the band back together and hope the good times follow.

Did I say you said there weren’t? It was to illustrate how involved the agreed process is. With so many steps involved, obviously taking some length of time, any footballing decisions made now can’t be linked to any preferences of any possible investor. Not that you said that either!

I think he got a raw deal at Trannie. Took them to the play offs and the Papa John Trophy Final at Wembley and then shown the door.
Bentley gone on 20:50 - Mar 27 with 2745 views | SaxonDale | The right decision- can only presume finances dictated he wasn't sacked earlier and given rumours of a clause which would've seen him sacked when relegation was confirmed, an agreement has been reached for a minimal payoff now. It's obvious that we need experience at some level of the club to help with the footballing side. At our best we had Hill, Garlick and Dunphy who had about 30 years (?) in their roles overseeing the footballing side and we've replaced that in recent times through no fault of our own largely with either inexperience or people that aren't quite a fit for this club. I hope the search for a DoF is well under way as I can't see a manager accepting the role until they know who they could potentially working alongside in the future. FWIW I would be happy to have Hilly return- I think he could at least offer a vision and plan on how to get the club restructured properly.

There’s a possible feeling that the opportunity was missed to look to bring in Hill weeks ago - it was suggested after the Hartlepool defeat - because at that stage it would have been one of those left field decisions that could have reinvigorated the whole place (it would have caused some issues too of course, but everyone accepts Hill can produce the unpredictable, hopefully it would have been in a good way!) Right now it feels less right, the chaos is greater and the hope is pretty much gone. That’s not to say he may be a better option than others.

Their decision to step up in the club’s hour of need was the most disastrous decision for them personally and financially. The football decisions made since haven’t come close to balancing that out!

Can’t agree that the timing is bizarre as the performance at Crawley was a sackable offence in its own right. And now that we’re 99% certain to be relegated it suggests that the club have accepted we’ll be playing National league football next season and are starting to plan accordingly.

Like I say fair play to them for putting their money into the club but the last 18months has been a shambles. Going to games is chore for me now, the only thing that's keeps me going is the social aspect of a matchday. I really am in two minds about a season ticket for next season.
