Keith Stroud cocking it up again at the Brum vs Blades game on Friday night 10:08 - Feb 6 with 8505 viewsShotKneesHoop

Missed two blatant penalties and then allowed the Sheffield United goal to stand after a blatant offside. Booked Lee Bowyer for complaining as a result.

Minimal effect on Bournemouth!

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:

challenging an opponent for the ball

We will certainly have to agree to disagree Paul.

The above is copied from the laws of the game. IMO Sharp running towards the goalkeeper is challenging an opponent for the ball.

I accept that you don't think so, but it is as valid an interpretation as that he wasn't challenging.

Been an interesting thread. As for “ but 'interfering' is clearly defined and merely moving towards the ball isn't in there.” whoever decided that really should not be in the position to write the laws and has never played the game.

Edit should have been a reply to PinnerPaul

Fair enough, but just for balance here's another referee's view on it

"No realistic chance of playing the ball, and even on the replay it’s difficult to tell from the camera angle whether he’s level or offside. Fits the “benefit of the doubt” argument for me. And let’s not be distracted by the fact that it poor defending afterwards with several chances to clear the ball away not taken."

Its all opinion in the end!

Fair point John and not the only example of the English language meaning of a word not matching the definition in the LOTG.
