I've just been reading about someone who's designed a simple resource to help people during the Covid-19 outbreak

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-51880695

It looks like cases are now starting to multiply in the UK, as expected, and it struck me that this messageboard could become a similar resource for its users. We tend to do this naturally anyway, for instance when there's a road closure or some kind of incident, it's often posted on here before it hits the local news outlets

But more than that. I'm thinking in terms of anyone who needs to self-isolate. The vast majority of us will have friends & family who can help, but even if there's just one person who needs something doing, its important they know they could post a request on here - perhaps not identifying themselves but including their locality/neighbourhood thus allowing anyone who lives nearby to PM them. Always taking the required precautions, both for security and prevention of spread of course

And beyond that, even if no-one needs that type of practical assistance, there may be some who are less resilient in coping psychologically with this critical phase, of unknown length and outcome. This messageboard should be a place for them to find some respite

It won't be long before major withdrawal symptoms from the normal sporting and general activities start to kick in. It's a test for the whole of our society, and beyond. Let's try to make a difference

Thanks for posting original advice 49th and for your post Shun. Where is best place to get these please. As an asthmatic prone to chest infections I'd like to get some pronto.

Holland and Barratt at Tesco or via their online shop. I buy Vitamin D3 as a diabetic at the suggestion of my doctor. He does suggest that you can overdose though so don't have a stupidly high dose for a very prolonged time. My dose is 25ug. H&B charge £18.49 for 250 tablets. Was in the penny sale last week but now been taken out of that and you are limited to 2 bottles per person. But they have them online right now.

Shun, ( or anyone else) I have a load of multivitamins ( sanatagen mint things) that went out of date in December, have been taking them anyway as my assumption is they just might not work as well.

Is thacks logic sound or doing as much harm as good or worse.

Thanks

I highly doubt they’ll do you any harm. Any vitamins the body doesn’t use it just expels as waste. I’d still probably buy a new pack to be safe though!

The producers of medicinal/therapeutic stuff err massively on the side of caution with their "use by" dates, just to be on the safer than safe side

Shun's right - they won't do any harm and you might as well use them up (taking care with the maximum amount per day) but fresher is better, obvs.

It's a common trope amongst UK Doctors that you can overdose on VitaminD, its nonsense, they have never seen anyone that has VitaminD excess.
My wife takes 15,000 IU per day and her MS has stopped in its tracks, no attack for over 6 years. If you lived in SouthAfrica and worked outdoors you could get over 20,000 IU s per day from sunshine. Dr Michael Holick (y Tube) is the worlds leading expert on Vit D

My 91 year old M in L takes 5000 IU and has now not had an asthma attack for 3 years despite having frequent attacks prior to that.

Oh and Vit D isnt really a Vitamin , its more like a hormone.

Here in the Czech R we are pulling together to make cotton masks as there is a severe shortage. They don't stop you contracting the virus but they stop you spreading.

As they are cotton, you can wash them and reuse them. For those of you who want to - you can find some patterns and instructions (google translate) here:

Not surprised. It's appalling how some folk behave. Social media has largely created and sustains a me first mentality that will never go away now. Ironically, society's loss.

There's always someone worse off than you though. Imagine being American!

My other half’s lad came back from uni yesterday, as it’s shut. He has since been to Nando’s, played golf, went to greggs and coop and is currently out on the piss in weatherspoons.

He is generally a nice sensible 19 year old but the level of phuckkwidity being shown by him and his mates is nuts.

I do honestly despair

I wish I had his money at 19 to do all that in one day!!

Seriously though the Chief Medical Officer yesterday said that young people will die too - just not as many. He is worried that they have heard a message that they will be safe. They are not and he was clear in his message to young people about socialising in pubs "that it has to stop now".

Chances are most people of that age group have one or both grandparents still alive. My argument for people of that age is that it isn't about them it's about their grandparents and maybe even their parents? And the ability of the NHS to treat everyone who comes through their doors. Dalenet also makes a good point above too though. It seems young folk (especially in the US although this is only anecdotal?) are vulnerable too.

Sainsburys update

wanted to write to you again to update you on the steps we are taking to make sure everyone has access to food and essential items. I'm also sharing more information about how we are supporting our colleagues in these challenging times and how you can help.

An increasing number of you have told me that you're not always able to get the items that you need when you need them. We are working with our suppliers to get even more stock of essential items and we are adding warehouse capacity on a daily basis. You will have seen that we put restrictions in place this week to ensure that more products are on shelf for longer. From Monday 23rd March, we are consolidating our opening hours and all our supermarkets will be open from 8am to 8pm, Monday-Saturday, including those with an Argos store. Sunday opening, Sainsbury’s Local and petrol station opening times will stay the same.

This means we can focus our store colleagues’ time on keeping shelves stocked and serving our customers well during the times that most of you are already shopping.

Last Thursday, we set aside an hour for elderly and vulnerable shoppers in our supermarkets. Many of you have told me how much you appreciated this and that you would like this to become a regular event. Some of you also said we should extend this to members of our hardworking NHS and Social Care workers. And we will be doing just that.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all our supermarkets will dedicate 8am - 9am to serving elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers, as well as NHS and Social Care workers. They will just need to show us their pass or ID when they visit. Some of you fed back that you couldn’t find what you wanted during that hour, so we will try our best to have essential items on shelf for these customers. We will be working to keep our shelves well stocked and would encourage customers to arrive throughout the hour to prevent queues forming and to help everyone keep a safe distance.

Hundreds of you have written to me to thank our amazing colleagues who are working around the clock to serve our customers. A number of you have also shared your concerns for the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues. I want you to know that we are doing all we can to support everyone who works in our business. We have committed to paying all colleagues who are unwell or need to self-isolate for the full period of fourteen days. We have also committed to paying vulnerable and elderly colleagues in full if the government decides they should isolate for 12 weeks. We hope this will go some way to helping our teams through this uncertain time and we are looking at other ways to thank our colleagues for their extraordinary efforts.

To keep our colleagues safe, I need to ask again for your help. Please do your best to stand one metre away from colleagues in our stores where you can. And we would prefer you to pay with card rather than cash at our tills. Please also treat our colleagues and other customers with kindness and respect. These are unprecedented circumstances and our colleagues are being asked to come to work every day while so many others are being asked to stay at home. We all need them to keep coming to work to feed the nation — a small thank you goes a really long way.

Folks I've got to pull this back to the top. The handwashing is important BUT it's airborne droplets which are a major infection risk.

From seeing that the nation there is basically ignoring social distancing - please please please start spreading the word around wearing a mask or at least covering your mouth.

Hi Folks

Just looking for a bit of advice/clarity on the UK situation.

As the UK has now asked citizens abroad to return home and contact their embassy I thought I would do that even though I was happy enough with the original advice of avoiding non essential travel. Unfortunately the embassy I contacted has decided to be "jobsworth" and will not talk to any British Citizen even to just log that they are there and take a contact (so I am not actually sure why we were meant to contact them). Fortunately the Danish embassy gave me a bit of help. I am hoping to get back to the UK on the 1st/2nd April, possibly sooner but wanted to check a few things

1. I would initially stay with my mother while I find somewhere to live but she is 79 so potentially classed as vulnerable. Does this mean that I can't go straight back there without doing a 14 day isolation. I haven't lived fully in the UK since 2001 and although I have a place, it is rented out & I wouldn't want to have to ask a tenant to leave. The suggestions are I can go straight to my mother's, , but of course it may cause her some worries even though I have been in very low risk country ( 5 countries with less than 50 cases in total)

2. Assuming I self isolate which may be best, are hotels allowed to take people straight from the airport? ( In some countries you can not self Isolate in hotels etc but in designated government places if travelling from another country)

2. Are taxi's allowed to pick me up from the airport ( Trains seem to be cancelled )

3. What is the situation in supermarkets? Has the panic buying slowed down? I will need to buy food and toilet rolls( & perhaps can bring a suitcase of the latter with me !! )

4. Any other tips. look outs etc.

My worry is not so much returning home but the fact that my travel insurance runs out on the 1st April. Fairly sure I won't get an extension.

Hi Mark,

This is the government page for "returners".

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-advice-novel-coronavirus#if-youre-abroad-and-

I'll chip in what I know but it may not always be gospel.

I think the rules for households are you should stay within them. If you are joining hers you should then stay in it and not go to another then go back etc. Not sure if there is a hard and fast rule on isolation when returning back from low risk countries so perhaps that's one for common sense? Bearing in mind you'll be flying in very close proximity to many others, I would certainly self isolate until the risk had gone to err on the side of caution and allow all to sleep easy.

I can't imagine your destination would be checked when you land, but you never know. It's disgraceful that you aren't be told definitively by the consulate, which the government insist you are being! Edit: if you are looking to book a hotel near the airport, maybe you could ask them as they may have experience.

Taxis are still running but not been near the airport in weeks. I would come and collect you but have been instructed to self isolate. Any other Cheshire Daleys volunteering?

Panic buying seems to have stopped where I am but there is a queueing system to get in in many supermarkets now in an attempt to restrict contact distance, but many folks completely ignore it in spite of all the advice. Also a queue to checkout and fewer tills. Also restrictions on number of items you can buy - varies item to item. I (innocently) tried to buy 8 beers yesterday. They were 4 for £6. Was told I could only buy 3. In fact she scanned them all in and they went through.

You are only supposed to go out once a day for exercise and avoid all contact less than 2m with anyone. The police are starting to clamp down on this more and more as loads of people are taking day trips/holidays and still meeting up with others. Most people do seem to be observing the advice though. It's fecking dull but necessary. Good luck.

Hi NM, just a few thoughts, i'm sure others will have more

1. You could try contacting your MP, or your mother's MP if you're not registered to vote. They should be able to pull the right strings, though they may have a full inbox but on the other hand won't be in Westminster

If there's no clear advice then you'd be entitled to stay at a hotel, i would've thought

2. Taxis are still turning up where i live

3. Supermarkets have settled down, and most have brought in counter-virus measures such as hand sanitisers, limiting numbers and also the amounts of any item that can be purchased, usually three. Won't be a problem, but don't go too early, the early hours are being reserved for the elderly/at risk and now for NHS staff too

4. If you've got a tan, think of a good explanation! But seriously, good luck

Thanks DL, and DA

Luckily I found out that Tiger Taxi are still doing airport runs but thanks for the gesture DL. Just waiting to get through to my insurance company to see what I am covered for but have been on hold an hour. Only 1 airline left out of the country so if that closes then I will be in Tanzania for the duration of the crisis. Hopefully insurance will cover the hotels

Good to know the panic buying has been resolved. For peace of mind I will probably do 14 days in a hotel & then decide if I will stay with my mother or rent somewhere ( I assume rental may be difficult too).

Thanks again for the advice

Just seen on the news this morning that Govt is calling for UK housing market to be suspended. Since there is a lot of overlap between estate and letting agencies that won't help your lodgings search, unfortunately. Just thought I'd mention it in case you can start looking from where you are now and put some feelers out/get fixed up before things start to shut down?
