Next manager? on 11:03 - Apr 12 by Antti_Heinola | I think rightly TF got stick for that comment about Hughes interviewing us. But at the same time, anyone who goes to any interview and doesn't ask questions is an idiot. This increases immensely when going for a manager's job at a football club. Even if I was desperate for the job, I would be asking lots and lots of questions. What exactly is the money situation? Will you be backing me financially? What are your expectations? What happens if I exceed them? What happens if I fall a bit short? A lot short? And so on. Any bloke who comes in not asking those questions (and dozens more) doesn't have the brain to be a manager IMO. I don't like him much, but Steve Bruce said one wise thing: you don't pick clubs, you pick owners. And to do that, owners do need to be interviewed, regardless of whether you consider the club to be a step up or a step down. Hughes was an arrogant arse, but I don't particularly blame him for doing his due diligence. I don't know why, but for some reason, I'm leaning towards Bircham. Just something about him. It was interesting we improved last season after Fleming left and he seemed to get a bigger role behind the scenes. Also interesting that the club seemed not to want to let him leave. Thought of highly it seems. |
Spot on. Another fairly innocuous TF quote distorted in hindsight. Can't gaslight myself into believing Birch is qualified however. Maybe he is, maybe isn't, but there's nothing for us here outside the club to go on. You also get the feeling that this is the only job he'll ever interested in applying for, which is sweet but no good really.
Next manager? on 11:59 - Apr 12 with 5072 views | rsonist | Had a look on a WBA board about Moore and his downfall, interesting stuff. Seems he started with a straightforward plan that suited the players and freed them from Pulis' shackles, and then (echoing McClaren somewhat) overcomplicated by pushing a possession game he wasn't able to get across, while being reluctant to blood some very good kids. Some are speculating this shift was down to the arrival of Graeme Jones (assistant and disciple to Martinez at Swansea and soon-to-be Luton boss come summer). Come to think of it, I know Antti and I have semi-jokingly suggested Rangel's got a bit about him as a potential manager but Swansea's current u23 coaches Cameron Toshack and Gary Richards are very highly regarded in the game (linked with the Barnsley job last time round) and are probably exactly the sort of hidden left-field candidates we should be interviewing. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/double-act-heart-swan
Next manager? on 12:11 - Apr 12 with 5030 views | aston_hoop | To be honest, the more I read about Angel Rangel, the more I would have liked to have seen him given a chance in the short term. Has worked under some good coaches like Martinez, Rodgers, Laudrup etc, talks very articulately about the game, has that good guy demeanour that modern footballers seem to relate to but I bet he isn't afriad to put someone in their place, already knows the squad and the club, plus he is even a part qualified accountant so can give Lee Hoos a hand too! Rangel's Rangers!

interesting about Moore. That sacking seemed baffling at the time unless they had a replacement lined up, which they don't, and has got no less baffling since.

I dunno, not having a replacement is certainly baffling but even without knowing all the background detail it was pretty obvious they were underachieving. A poll on the board I looked at was 60-40 in favour of the sacking.

That's fair enough, Antti, but the candidate should also do their research before bowling up for the interview. Most people working in football should already know that we are hamstrung by FFP and will continue to be until our revenues start to rise. That is probably inextricably linked with a new stadium and some of the people who will build that have not yet been born, I suspect. Anyone actually going for an interview with QPR should have done enough homework to be able to tell their interviewers that they already understand the financial position and that the discussion can focus on other issues, primarily how the successful candidate is going to turn base metal into gold.

yeah but Redknapp under-achieved with us and we still went up. I would've fired him that season, but then I can't bear the man. If your club is in the play-offs, in 4th, it seems pretty ludicrous to sack someone - unless, (as Liverpool had with Klopp when they sacked Rodgers) you have a genuinely better replacement ready. All the Albion fans I know are completely baffled that he was sacked and never saw it coming. Odd one.

Of course any candidate would know the FFP situation, and any candidate you would expect to do research first, but that wouldn't tell you half of what the owners can tell you. Even within those confines, there will be wiggle room and you need to know how much. No amount of Google searches will tell you that. And I never said they shouldn't be selling themselves too! Of course they need to do that and they need to be questioned and examined and prodded thoroughly. But any manager who just comes in, says 'ok, i see we're skint. don't worry, that doesn't bother me' but asks no questions at all is a far bigger red flag to me than someone who tries to get as much first hand info as he possibly can before possibly agreeing to take the job.

Yes, but does he have enough experience? What concerns me is whether it will it make a blind bit of difference who we hire? That's the question. Only if we're lucky. I'm just not sure there is always a correlation between the potential ability of the manager and results on the pitch. Or only up until a point. Imo, the easiest way to be a good manager is to have the best players. And be lucky. [Post edited 13 Apr 2019 5:37]
