Before the semi game, it was Cyrille we most feared such a dangerous striker and you could not help but like and respect him any other time but it was Bob's day
my old man hated any footballer who wasn't Rodney marsh or the morgan twins but he used to wax lyrical about Regis and how Rangers should sign him he was Les before Les , and DD is bang on should have been in the England 82 squad instead of Brooking or Keegan my memory of him was Bullying our defence in a Friday night game against Coventry around 87, it was Tony Roberts debut, Rangers had gone one up before Regis bossed the 2nd half and the young Roberts , we lost 2-1 , it was a masterclass in how to be an effective striker RIP to the big man
I've just checked the '82 WC squad again and looks like Peter Withe made the squad ahead of Regis. Absolutely astounding. Peter. Bloody. Withe.

RIP Big Man
If you weren't around at the time, you can't possibly imagine how shit scared we were of big Cyrille before that game. It was a massive match for us (and them) - and he had been ripping it up all season - 17 league goals from 37 games says it all. RIP indeed - such a shame that he's gone so soon.
Because he did not dive or cheat, whinge or moan, just got on with it.
I don't think he was ever sent off. could be wrong.
Edit just had a look and can't find any bookings or reds. that would be amazing.

Yep, compare him with Drogba, the modern player he most closely resembled, also built like a superhero, but spent a huge amount of time cheating and complaining.
Rare then as it is now for an opposition striker to be generally well liked by opposition supporters. Very sad.
I think its because big Cyril goes back to a time when footballers were generally one of the mill blokes who by luck (being spotted) and good talent got to live out every Sunday leagues players dreams, they were normal blokes who lived relatively normal lives , they mixed with the fans in pubs and clubs and were approachable footballers in this era wasn't hated it wasn't the showbiz life it is now with sha gging reality stars , taking flights to Paris for a weekend, partying in Dubai or buying £700 pound slippers, there was no rolling around , diving for penalties , demanding transfers and you never pulled out of international football unless you had a broken leg, yes you had your herberts on the terraces but by and large the footballing fan that went in the 70' 80s and early 90s were very knowledgeable and appreciated teams and visiting players, if an oppo team scored a screamer i remember HQ would break into applause , that doesn't happen now , I mean how could you not like a team that had Brown , Cunningham, Regis, Bateson, Robson etc , there wasn't the talksport or twitter fan then that cant see past their own rose tinted teams specs I know we are supposed to be living in this golden age of football and waxing lyrical about yesterdays pool/city game but id rather watch Regis and co destroy Man utd on a muddy , snowy pitch than watch anything about todays top flight
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles
Brian Moore

We were one of the first families to be moved into the newly built Stonebridge Estate in the early 70's and one of my earliest memories was my Mum shouting at a young Cyrille Regis to stop kicking a football up against our front door. He went to Cardinal Hinsley but I never knew him as he was 10 years older than me, his younger brother David was a talented athlete too. I went to school with his cousin Otis who as a young kid I was convinced would be the next Pele, went on to have a reasonable career but never became the superstar I was convinced he would be.
Last bumped into Otis a few years ago in Shepherds Bush waiting for Zesh Rehman as he was acting as his agent at the time.

Got to agree about the pitches.
Some very good players around today but for many, they could not play on those pitches, would not want to get their colour boots dirty.

Was at that Coventry game, I thought he was going to head Roberts into the net also.

Apart from our own Rodney and Francis Lee who both knew the art of getting a penalty.
Very young, as terryb says earlier he and his peers of that time had to bear a lot and he seemed to do it with great presence. There will be many thankful for that
The smiling face of Cyril sporting WBA stripes graced the BBC Grandstand Final Score programme many a time back in the late 70's early 80's, simply because he scored a shed load of goals. A wonderful player. RIP.
I'm in agreement with you Disco. Greenwood was fixated though on his Mariner/Woodcock partnership which often was about as threatening as Hinge & Bracket playing up front.
RIP Big Cyrille
One of those clips I keep going back to, like Headingley 81 and Hagler-Hearns
