Shades of Paulo DiCanio who did the same thing and won a 'Fair Play Award' for catching the ball in the penalty area from a corner, to allow an injured player to be treated.

Presumably a free kick was given to Everton? From memory it was a cross into the box and he had a real chance of scoring.

I think the ref still would have given a handball free kick against DiCannio - the only difference was West Ham were attacking so no threat of a penalty being given.

Yeah but the difference is Swindon were 2-1 up in the 95th minute and one of the swindon players sat down 'due to an injury'. Don't believe for a second that wasn't intended to time waste as I doubt the DiCanio incident was anything but a genuine injury

The point remains that deliberate handball is a red card. No discretion.

Its only a red card if it prevents a goalscoring chance (defending). If you deliberately punch the ball in the net to score a goal (attacking) its only a yellow card.

Cross or corner. A deliberate handball is a red card. Common sense prevailed and an injured player was allowed treatment.
Deliberate handball on its own isn't a red card.
It can be if it prevents a goal or obvious goalscoring opportunity, but, for example, out by the touchline, handball can be just a warning or a yellow card, depending on the circumstances.
From the Laws of the Game:
Sending-off offences
A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the following seven offences:
serious foul play violent conduct spitting at an opponent or any other person denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area) denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures receiving a second caution in the same match
