Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now 17:40 - Jul 20 with 9880 views | willis1980 | Awful captaincy and equally abismal form, as it stands england can't afford both lack of leadership and runs. God knows who can replace him at this point but he's not cutting the mustard
Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now on 17:49 - Jul 20 with 6460 views | ingeminate | That's the thing who replaces him? Broad? Straight to LJR? Not blown away by either, I reckon give cook this series then if no improvement bite the bullet but keep cook in the team and see if his form picks up without the captaincy.

He ought to do a similar thing that Mike Denness did in Australia in 1974/75 when he was getting low score after low score and we were getting battered by Lillee and Thomson and volunteer to drop himself (Denness actually did drop himself for what he thought was the greater good of the side). Cook won't do anything of the sort though as he hasn't got the guts or the professional pride. Honestly it's like going back to the old days having one of the old gentleman captains in charge only Cook hasn't got the captaincy skills. Although those old amateurs weren't usually test class batsmen they were often pretty shrewd captains. I honestly think he is the worst captain of England I've seen in my lifetime of watching and following cricket (about 41 years).

I said the same thing about Cook being the worst england captain I've seen although I havent been around 41 yrs. you know it's bad when you're being shown up by dhoni who I view as a poor test captain. England slipping to Bangladeshi standards

Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now on 20:01 - Jul 20 with 6259 views | MrSheen | Gower and Botham were pretty hopeless too, wrapped up in their own game and unable to get their team going. Cook is spineless though, doesn't do anything to change things. Has Ballance ever captained any side? He looks a fixture now. [Post edited 20 Jul 2014 20:02]

Gets ignored when you score 100 after 100 and beat substandard opposition . Sorry for sticking in the boot, but please go Alistair.

Broad is I guess the obvious choice. One thing the Cook demise has papered over is the Bell conundrum. The guy is bang out of form and bang out of position, I really question why captain after captain, selector after selector has omitted him from the #3 spot? Has escape any criticism in any way shape or form whilst the finger has pointed at Cook. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now on 21:01 - Jul 20 with 6157 views | AgedR | Not sure I share the vitriol against Cook in this thread. Since jettisoning 'it's all about Kevin', Cook is our one remaining world class player. However, he has no feel for captaincy. Unfortunately, there are no other candidates. Broad? Please. For me, the only choice amongst the current squad is Anderson. But I can certainly see the downside. Eoin Morgan would have been a decent choice, but, the selectors have knackered that by conservative picking of bits and pieces cricketers like Moen (although admittedly they have done well) have backed themselves in a corner. Root back as opener, keep Cook, drop Robson and bring in Morgan as skipper.

Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now on 21:05 - Jul 20 with 6148 views | DWQPR | Have thought before last summers Ashes series that Cook was a poor captain. The away series and home series against New Zealand showed his limitations. Might as well reappoint Mike Brearley as captain, batting would be no worse but his captaincy infinitely better. Whilst we are at it get rid of Peter Moores also. Out of his depth at international level. The player I would have as captain is Peitersen. Need someone to put a few noses out of joint including Paul Downton. Get rid of Prior as well and put Buttler in. Nothing to lose as we will get stuffed by India 4-0 weather/wicket permitting and next summers Ashes series will turn into a series of three day matches we are that bad.

I thought at the time it showed a massive level of disrespect for both the opposition and the game itself. Well the Aussies sure rubbed their faces in it down under and now they're being well and truly pissed on by every team they come up against.

The problem with Bell is now that he's moved up the order to no4 that he's constantly having to come in and face the new ball because Cook fails every innings and Robson's fails over half the time as well. The one good thing out of all if this is that Ballance is looking a proper replacement for Trott. But with Trott and Peterson gone, and Cook, Bell and Prior completely out of form, the weight sits firmly on the new guys. If the openers were doing their job, the middle order wouldn't be under pressure as soon as they're in and everythign would be better. I'm just hoping Root and Ali can last through the first ten overs in the morning, if they do I recokn at least one of them will carry it through. Unfortunately there's no county cricket for several weeks for Cook to go back and get some runs so the only place he can work on that trigger movement is in the nets, so he'll almost certainly keep his spot for the next test. The one player than must be dropped is Stokes. He's failed to get double figures in his last nine innings this year, and I can't for the life of me see what he offers that Jordon doesn't until he can get back into some form. Prior also is just about done. His body is creaking at the edges, his batting isn't holding up, and his keeping is less that stellar these days.
Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now on 22:14 - Jul 20 with 6031 views | ted_hendrix | Well something has to be done about Cook, you cant keep having these failures, I peeped at the score today and at 40 odd for 1 I thought go on sit there now for the rest of the day, the next time I looked we had lost 4 wickets, Its almost bloody predictable. How we'll get through tomorrow morning gawd knows and watching the last couple of overs tonight was nerve wracking, Moen Ali led one hell of a charmed life in the last over, unbelievable. Cook is a mess at the moment, someone has to grab the nettle and make a decision.

Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now on 22:25 - Jul 20 with 6017 views | willis1980 | I think james Anderson has scored more runs in his recent knock at Trent bridge than Cook has in all of 2014! Cooks captaincy has been pretty poor from the get go, he was saved by his own runs and those like priors in New Zealand. The bowling has carried his captaincy thus far but now that swann is gone this is no longer the case, they bowlers are however, out shining the top order with the bat. Cooks side reeks of desperation and low confidence, there's nothing like letting your opponents know how brittle your top order by trying to bolster the batting line up with bit part players. As for Morgan he's not the answer in my eyes, I don't think he warrants a place in the test side. We seem to have reverted to the 90s in the blink of an eye and reintroduced the revolving door policy. Is it any wonder some of the players lack confidence when they're introduced for a handful of tests an then jettisoned shortly afterwards. Robson Ali and stokes will be gone before you know it, just as Compton bairstow and Taylor seem to have disappeared.

Yes - agree. If the answer is Peter Moores then you wonder what the question was. As is stands, while we've got Moores we've got Cook. And while we've got Moores & Cook, then our best player is out in the cold. I don't see an obvious solution. Sad to say but we'll need to lose a few more games before a rethink.

I would also say that despite sailing, you should never have a captain who texts the opposition about his team mates, and tweets bragging about hitting 8k runs in a flop innings while his team were being humiliated. Good riddance to that pr!ck
Alistair cook has surely got to be for the chop now on 11:05 - Jul 21 with 5781 views | johnhoop | I think that Matt Prior has been extremely lucky that Cook's problems have deflected attention away from him. He's been an absolute liability this summer, barely scoring a run and keeping very poorly. One of the chances he put down against Sri Lanka would have been taken by almost every club wicketkeeper in the country-he was throwing the f--king thing up before he'd caught it. We'd be far better off with a specialist keeper like Read or Foster as they'd take the catches and could hardly do any worse with the bat. Having said all that I hope he gets a ton today and wins the game for us-just don't think it's very likely.

even bairstow or buttler would do better. i would love to know what happened to davies, it seems like he came out of closet and then disappeared. not usre if that was his choice or the ecbs
