Like Roy Keane's anecdote about binning the idea of signing Robbie Savage when he heard his ansaphone message....

I bumped into Jan Mlakar leaving South Africa Road with his girlfriend and they were both wearing matching Stan Smith trainers, maybe, but, it was the one's with the platform soles...

Just could'nt see him mixing it in the Championship if he was letting his Mrs pick his trainers, especially those ones!

Fairly sure Daley grew up on the same estate (Lancaster West) in Latimer Road as Les Ferdinand,

Based on our recruitment bias in those days, not surprised he mentioned having trials at Chelsea but not the R's.

Most teams now seem to be set up with a lone striker and one, two or three 10's,

Armstrong does not have the skill-set or attributes to play as a lone striker.

Dykes is coming back from injury, is'nt fully fit but Cifuentes chose to get him some game time yesterday,

Didnt go but played decent by all accounts & yet the puerile nonsense has already started,

Likely we would have been relegated last season if Cifuentes persisted in starting Frey and / or Armstrong as our lone striker, similar to season before when Dykes played post-pneumonia and helped keep us up,

I'm hoping Dykes gets back to his best form & / or Celar can be the lone striker / target man with a 1 in 3 goal scoring ratio we need, alternately Frey improves considerably on last seasons abysmal performances,

If Midfield was less defensive yesterday (a necessity in last years run-in) that's a big positive as a more attack minded Midfield will mean more chances created & more goals, likely shared throughout the team if we're set up around a lone striker.

Mlakar was above him in the pecking order in the Slovenian squad.

Seems a positive signing as we are overly reliant on Dykes to stay injury free,

Lots of positives about how the club are doing things right but the one I can't work out on that logic is the signing of Frey,

Open minded on that signing and appreciate in the absence of a Warburton style of attacking team play we lack goals, but why didn't we get a short term loan in rather than commit to Frey,

Hopefully when fully match fit we will all see the logic and sense in that signing.

We're agreeing again Gazza,

Some of the posts about his raw pace & power seem to forget about the round thing that's a fairly fundamental part of football,

You have to be able to control it, ideally use both feet to run with it and if you haven't got the technical ability to beat a player you need to be able to hold it up and play your 10s into goal scoring positions,

Thus far, haven't seen consistent evidence that Armstrong can do any of the above at this level.

Stoke (A) and Sheffield (H), similar to Birmingham City (H) were key must win games and we started Armstrong and Frey respectively as our lone strikers,

Other than R's Twitter, I'm thinking most were looking at those starting line-up's in the same way we did at Watford (A) and thought this is not making the best use of our limited resources and this won't be ending well.

Fortunately Frey pulled up lame, not sure what happened to Armstrong and the rest as they say is history.

Backtracking.....heh?

Northern made a 'show us your medals comment' presumably in jest ie have you ever won a medal (league or cup) as a Manager as presumably you need to have won medals as a Manager before you go to Watford Away and look at Ainsworth's line-up and think omg / wtf this is'nt going to end well; similar to some of Marti's random moments last season until things fell into place in our run-in...

So I replied, similarly in jest, that like Marti, I've never won any medals so presumably don't qualify as a 'high achieving footballing super coach'...

I think you've taken that post in January out of context as mentions playing Armstrong wide in a 3 and not like with Frey as a lone striker which was the case in the run in which would imo have seen us relegated, reckon you should find a few posts to confirm this point.

An incredible sentence, ffs, it's a joke, albeit you've confirmed it to be factually correct so surely the word you were looking for was credible rather than incredible.

Referring to my very first paragraph...I've never won a professional league or cup...hence answering your question as to whether I'm a high achieving football super coach.

But to see we needed to bomb out Andre Dozzell, revert to a 4-2-3-1 and that Armstrong & Frey should have been nowhere near 1st team starters last season I'm not sure you need to be a card carrying UEFA super coach.

Similar to Cifuentes I never played professional football and neither of us have ever managed a professional team to league or cup success, so we have something in common,

I'd also add I've never been ovrly critical of or disrespectful to Cifuentes but I'm still reserving judgement on how good a coach he is and / or can be,

I think how you view Cifuentes is based on how you view our squad last season, particularly when key players regained fitness and after the transfer windows additions,

Many were of the view the squad were mostly wrong un's, had hung out too many good Managers and its was just a matter of re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic ahead of our inevitable relegation,

Others thought a semi decent Coach with a 4-2-3-1 formation to suit our best XI players should keep that team up which he did, a decent effort but for me not unexpected or outstanding.

Hopefully we sell Armstrong and Frey is transformed into looking like a professional footballer and they back Cifuentes's by buying another striker, then we can judge him.

All about opinions, but personally I can't compare a bloke who competed in 10 individual events from sprinting to long jump to javelin to high jump to a bloke who sat in a boat with some other blokes in what is arguably a minority sport for posh blokes (Redgrave excepted!).

Likewise there are just too many opportunities to win medals on a bike and I'd put Thompson (and Cavendish) way ahead of any of the gold medal winning track cyclists as good as Hoy and Kenny undoubtedly were at their peaks.

Jessica Ennis is a good shout but for me Thompson edges it as he won 2 golds, should have been 3 (bar injury) and held the world record at one time for most points ever scored in his event, unlike Ennis who never held the world record and won her solitary Olympic gold on home soil.

Not sure on your Maths there Bazza,

I'm a huge Kane fan but a penalty and two unmissable 6 yard tap-ins (one a deflection) glosses over a very poor tournament for Harry Kane,

Unlike the majority, I put that down to the Manager and his lack of an attacking game plan rather than Kane suddenly becoming a poor player overnight,

I'm yet to go all in on Cifuentes as similarly am yet to see a clear attacking game-plan, hoping that's down to pragmatism given the situation he found himself in.

Not having a dig at you PP but presuming they left that dog whistle comment in from Colin Hart in that documentary to highlight the 'latent' racism within the press at that time,

A lad who had to make his own way in the world from the age of 7 and that gobshite Hart who couldnt lace his running shoes makes that fkg outragoeus 'chip on his shoulder' comment, cnt.

Interesting that Harry Kane suddenly looked a leaden-footed championship level footballer playing in a team with 6 defenders, who committed no more than 3 other players to their attack, with only himself in the penalty area in a team with no natural width or ability to cut back a decent cross from the bye-line.........now where have I seen this set-up before.........
